I've done this in AIBU for the voting feature. IF (and a big IF) schools go back on June 1st, will you be sending yours?

YABU - NO

YANBU - YES

Ds is attending school still a few days a week

We are still dealing with covid at work

And so will many other nhs workers and those that work in the care sector and we still likely to be on the 1st June

Pollymalex104 · 03/05/2020 14:39

The Sunday Times, as with most other papers, is obsessed with posting "dates", probably because it's fertile clickbait and sells papers. There is no such date given or confirmed anywhere. Believe it or not, we are still waiting to understand the way this virus is playing out.
Surely we don't believe what we read in the papers? Have we learnt nothing from the past few years of extreme distortion and manipulation of the facts?

Troubledmummy3 · 03/05/2020 14:50

Right now, I genuinely don't know...I do want them to get their lives back but June 1st seems too soon...then pointless sending them back in July unless they shorten the summer holidays even more than they already have where we live. But I'm 18 weeks pregnant so concerned for my unborn child also. It's not been a hardship home schooling them, v stressful at times but we're incredibly lucky that I've been furloughed and DH can work from home so we don't have the issue of childcare to worry about like many others 😕 As someone else put it, we're all in the same storm but we're in different boats. Some people don't have a choice x

TW2013 · 03/05/2020 14:52

I would prefer to see a phased return- one day a week, divided by families rather than year groups at primary school- doing outdoor activities, science, drawing, PE. Those schools with inadequate outside space are allowed to go to a park. Three days of these activities, ideally with parent helpers. Two days a week as we are now. Children (other than those of keyworkers) working at home other days.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/05/2020 14:53

I have seen so many dates in recent weeks that children are returning to school I wouldn’t believe anything until announced by the government

I’m sure the government is watching carefully how other countries are coping once lockdown is lifted the restrictions being lifted too soon then reversed again cycle may cause more problems for the economy and how the NHS shall manage

stardance · 03/05/2020 15:01

If my children's school stagger the return somehow and put safety measures in place then I might consider it. So small numbers of children at one time, spread them out over several rooms etc. Even if that means my two have to attend different days- I'm in no hurry to get back to work because the nature of my job means social distancing is impossible. I'd be terrified that I'll bring the virus home with me.

My son is in year 6 so my main priority is his transition from primary to secondary. He has additional needs and was meant to have an enhanced transition process.

Goingcrazzy · 03/05/2020 15:12

Mum, teacher, lone parent. Will be going back. No choice.

imsooverthisdrama · 03/05/2020 15:30

The Sunday Times doesn't actually say that though. It says they may be able to, but at the end quotes the government saying they haven't decided a date and schools will only go back when the time is right.
A lot of the papers have speculated in dates doesn't mean as fact .
They have already said it will be staggered .
The 1st June is still a month away , the rates are dropping the infection rate is dropping so I'm hopeful it will be within three month .
I was very sceptical of September anyway but I do agree it will be not as we know it . I can see why some parents are reluctant but I'd wait and see as things are changing now .

CrocodileFondue · 03/05/2020 15:50

No chance. Ridiculous idea to open up and try to carry as normal.

Wakemeuuuup · 03/05/2020 16:02

My yr10 child, absolutely. My yr 8 child is fine at home so no rush there

tootiredtoconga · 03/05/2020 16:04

If you don’t send your kid to school then your an idiot, quite frankly.

Maybe check your spelling before calling other people idiots.

bettybattenburg · 03/05/2020 16:17

@user1471510720 If you don’t send your kid to school then your an idiot, quite frankly

And how do you work that out without knowing our individual circumstances? Biscuit

cabbageking · 03/05/2020 16:42

Parents will send their children back when it is safe.
We don't have enough info yet to decide.

SpokeTooSoon · 03/05/2020 16:59

I’m guessing all of you on this thread who are fine about sending your dc back to school en mass don’t have anyone vulnerable in your households?

Well, yes. Is that acceptable to you? Or should we all suffer because of the small minority who must continue to isolate?

bettybattenburg · 03/05/2020 17:02

I know at the moment it is not safe. Whatever the government say, I will decide when it is safe for my DCs to go back to school.

Rosebel · 03/05/2020 17:05

Am I the only one who doesn't get this? So if children go back they'll be mixing with other children, teachers and parents but at the same time we've got to keep our social bubble to less, than 10! It can't be both!
My youngest and husband have asthma and I'm in my third trimester so no one will be going anywhere yet.

Lovebeingmama · 03/05/2020 17:11

Oh yes, he’d be straight in.
I’m working long hours (NHS) and husband is trying to work from home while looking after our 6 year old (he’s not a key worker so we can’t have school support) . We’re both exhausted, my son is bored and I feel guilty. ☹️🦠☹️

DICarter1 · 03/05/2020 17:44

I honestly don’t know. Three kids all in primary. One attends a specialist school, the other two mainstream. I’m aware data suggests kids maybe aren’t spreaders but my dds 1:1 in school is an adult and she may well get it. I want to see what our tiny, overpopulated school will do in terms of safety measured. As concerned as I am about the economy and about education, I’m also very concerned about staff, support staff and the wider community.

maria860 · 03/05/2020 17:49

Yes I will be as much as I am a worrier and have anxiety. I'm seeing all over the book people sayinf I will not be sending my kids life over money etc seriously?
We all love our kids but the stats suggest they are low risk they need school this isn't good for them ,us or anyone

Headbangersandmash · 03/05/2020 17:53

The problem with "the data " is that it seems to flip flop daily. One day you can only catch Corona once, next day you can catch it a second time then next day back to only catching it once.

I'm hoping by June that scientists will know more and will be able to say how safe kids are. In Denmark the R rose once schools reopened. That's presumably with social distancing and part-time schooling etc

cantory · 03/05/2020 17:55

I agree with you Rosebel.

cantory · 03/05/2020 17:57

@SpokeTooSoon It is not a small number of people who are vulnerable. Anyone who gets a flu jab is.

Headbangersandmash · 03/05/2020 18:01

I'd also like to hear more about what constitutes a child in these scientific studies. Lots of upper primary kids are small adult sized and some secondary school kids are very petite. 2 teens could be the same school year but differ in height by a foot.

bethg21 · 03/05/2020 18:03

YES !!!!

cantory · 03/05/2020 18:04

News are just saying lots of people who are really ill with this end up with kidney problems.
