To think houses with big gardens will go up in value

I’m thinking that after lockdown houses with premium/large gardens will go up in value and be more sought after in/around London area?

I think people are already assessing their lives and some will definitely make changes, including having outside space if they can afford it.

sunflowery · 02/05/2020 12:17

I think houses with gardens might generally but not specifically big ones. Our garden is average sized and we’ve been massively grateful for the outdoor space but have mainly used the patio!

wonkylegs · 02/05/2020 12:18

I've already had enquiries from people reassessing their homes and deciding they need more space (architect)

KC225 · 02/05/2020 12:27

I read a piece today that reckons house prices in London went up in April! Seriously, when all moving and transactions have been out on hold. Then I saw this came from Rightmove. A non biased bit of reporting then - no conflict of interests there.

No one knows what will happen - least of all Rightmove and the like.

Littlemissdaredevil · 02/05/2020 12:39

If home working becomes the new norm then bigger houses with gardens may actually go up. I bought a 4 bed house with a decent size garden before this all kicked off and I was planning on using the spare room as an office and doing more working from home after returning from mat leave anyway.

francienolan · 02/05/2020 13:04

I think the next series of Location Location Location will be all about the garden, not necessarily in London.

Seriously, when all moving and transactions have been out on hold.
Not all. I know 2 people that completed on their purchases in April. They had already had their valuation surveys done so all the in person stuff had happened already. They had to rent vans and move themselves but all of this is allowed and happening where possible.

DollyDoneMore · 02/05/2020 13:11

OK, I’ll bite. Why will homes with big gardens become more popular?

Raccoon2020vision · 02/05/2020 13:16

Or a shed or somewhere you can stick a greenhouse/hydroponics of some kind. Arguably much less vulnerable to pests/birds. (Though where we live the seagulls are definitely in that first category.)

Doingtheboxerbeat · 02/05/2020 13:20

Although I have a large covered balcony and have never been a garden fan (too much faff) I have never been so desperate for one now. To those that don't agree, try imagining people in apartments without any outdoor space and I don't mean shitty high rises either. I always thought that even if I won the lottery I would want to buy a city centre /Riverside penthouse type of thing rather than a house - not anymore.

ElspethFlashman · 02/05/2020 13:22

I know if I was thinking of moving next year then yeah, I'd be thinking about it.

People who are in flats have been pretty vocal about how hard it has been. I'd now rather a tiny house further out with a small garden than a big flat in the middle of town.

That said, people who could afford large gardens were never the ones who were going to buy flats instead anyway.

ElspethFlashman · 02/05/2020 13:27

We moved out from town last year. Had tiny garden just beside the shopping district, and moved to the outskirts of a village to a house on half an acre.

I was initially a bit dubious tbh. It was mainly to get the kids away from the urban sprawl but I thought I'd hate being in the sticks. But fuck me I'm appreciating it now. Kids have been very happy in the garden. It's been a bloody godsend. Luckiest move we ever made.

oohnicevase · 02/05/2020 13:33

@Dollydonemore
Isn't it obvious ? So you have space in this situation if it re occurs !

ZaraW · 02/05/2020 13:40

I'd like a large garden to grow vegetables and be more self sufficient.

Fredthefrog · 02/05/2020 13:57

And places with big gardens not already at a premium?

BillyCongo · 02/05/2020 13:58

Potentially in the slightly longer term and not just properties in London. People may revaluate what they want, especially higher earners with young kids or contemplating starting families. Homeworking may allow people to live further from work and manage longer commutes but less often. Businesses may also re-evaluate whether large offices with premium rents are still necessary. My town is on a direct line to London. We have a large 5 bed house, 3 acres, lovely views, country walks on our doorstep and excellent schools. Love it to pieces and wouldn't be anywhere else for love nor money right now. Value currently the same as zone 1, pokey flat with very limited or no outside space.....if you don't have to be in Canary Wharf every day any more then I know where I'd want to be.....

ABadlyShavedYeti · 02/05/2020 14:01

My son should have exchanged on his house yesterday but it has been pushed back a week so house buying / selling is still happening

LynseyLou1982 · 02/05/2020 14:07

Houses with outside space are great. When we were looking at houses we had to decide between a bigger house with more space for she we had kids and bigger mortgage or smaller house that we'd have to move from in a few years. We went bigger and I'm so glad we did. We bought a 4 bed extended semi with a 200ft long back garden. It's come in so handy not we have a toddler to entertain during lockdown. We're up north though so loads more for your money.

Millicent10 · 02/05/2020 14:07

New builds are still coming on rightmove ( obviously empty and you can take video tours). On the whole these have small rooms and gardens but usually 3 plus bathrooms. How long do people spend in the bathroom?

lachy · 02/05/2020 14:10

One of my colleagues moved house a week or so before lockdown from a flat to a house with a garden.

She's so relieved that she now has space outside for her DC.

We're hoping to move in the next 2 years, one of our requirements is a much bigger garden, and space for a home office for me. My organisation is reviewing the way in which we work, and is looking to encourage more working from home to support a better work life balance.

DareDevil223 · 02/05/2020 14:21

I currently live in a maisonette with no garden. My partner and I are buying a place together (when things start moving again) and some outside space, is now a total non-negotiable. I don't want a huge garden but I am pining for being able to sit outside, potter around planting tubs and hanging baskets etc.

lowlandLucky · 02/05/2020 14:26

Everyone dreams of a big garden and when the get one they realise how much work it takes. I struggled to sell a house because the garden was 30ft wide but 175 ft long.

wonkylegs · 02/05/2020 14:55

Agree @lowlandLucky
We have just over 1&1/2 acres and it's hard work and that's with paid help even though we leave a huge bit as a football pitch
I thought it was too big when we bought it & DH hates the fact that I was right.
We do love it but it takes lots of time and money to live with it. It has been great on the sunny days for the past few weeks but if I didn't go out rain or shine we'd be lost in the weeds.

Summerofloaf · 02/05/2020 16:23

wonkylegs why not turn half of the hard work area into a wild native meadow?

Blackandgreenteas · 02/05/2020 16:25

I reckon gardens and outside space generally might become a bit - a bit- more of a selling point than they already are. I doubt big gardens per se will go up hugely in price.like a pp said, a big garden is a lot of work!

480Widdio · 02/05/2020 16:28

Houses won’t be going up in value!!!

There will be a massive fall in prices.

Pelple will be in negative equity for years after this debacle is over.
