Do I need to go to hospital?!

Pregnantandoversick · 02/05/2020 08:26

Put on AIBU for more traffic.

Had 3 hospital admissions for hyperemesis so far, I am 11 weeks.

Havent kept any food down at all in 5 days now, but keeping more fluids down.
Still vomiting excessively.

Called 111 the other day and they sent paramedics round, who pinched the back of my hand as a dehydration test and told me I was fine, that I could stay at home.

I've never felt this weak in my life.barely have the energy to crawl out of bed and go to the loo. Going up and down stairs takes it out of me completely.

So would I be unreasonable for calling 111 back and asking for a hospital admission? I think I need serious fluids and anti sickness via IV as it's just not staying in me orally.

YABU- dont call, stay at home, see if it improves
YANBU- call and ask for admission

I had HG with both my pregnancies, the only medication that sort of worked was the one that you put between your lip and gum and it dissolves - I cannot remember the name of it though. Even then, it just took the edge off.

I basically lived on small sips of lucozade, water or juice, and when I could, tried small pieces of dry toast or salty crackers.

It's crap and it's horrendous, I basically spent two pregnancies in bed or on the sofa feeling like shit, I was signed off work for most of my pregnancies due to HG.

If you can keep liquids down, then you shouldn't get dehydrated - have you tried any meal replacement drinks? I couldn't stomach them but they help some people.

Karwomannghia · 02/05/2020 08:54

even with maternity centres closed there must be some contact with a midwife of some sort? More difficult on a weekend I imagine.

Spoons1987 · 02/05/2020 08:55

I wouldn’t go down the 111 route and risk them sending paramedics out again. It certainly isn’t a life/death situation worthy of paramedic time. But you do need a review of your medications to try and get you to a point where you can tolerate some solid food.

You need someone to take you into hospital to be seen at a maternity assessment centre. When you booked with the midwife were you given contact numbers?

lynzpynz · 02/05/2020 08:56

Currently on 2nd pregnancy at 26 weeks, hyperemesis both times and similar story with hospital admissions, in for days as a time as so dehydrated bags and bags of fluids weren't keeping ketone levels down.

If you have to go to A&E, go. Dehydration can be really dangerous for you and baby and they will want to see you. Having sat in A&E previously its hell when your head is bursting from dehydration - def call 111 first if you can as it might shorten the time you have to wait with the bright lights etc. although the sick bowl availability is helpful...

As pp said, try buccastem (which go under the lip so even if still being sick still help). These are available to buy in chemist but can also get on prescription. Im on a rotation of ondansetron, metaclopramide and cyclazine (each one once a day). It's helping. Brushing teeth is the worst as I'm sick every time, but need to brush as being so sick!

If one more person suggests ginger fucking biscuits... 😂😐.

Flat lemonade, ice lollies (not ice cream ones), oatcakes (ever tried to bring up an oatcake it's not easy) and toast and honey are my go-tos when really bad. Sometimes the 3rd breakfast stays down!

Much sympathy and solidarity, HG is hellish

Changedname78 · 02/05/2020 08:57

The fact your asking shows you are worried about wasting their time. When your babies life is involved it’s never wasting their time so defo get checked. Better to be safe than sorry for sure! Good luck

Changedname78 · 02/05/2020 08:58

Also massively recommend lemonade like others, the cheap 20p ones are perfect

Hollyhobbi · 02/05/2020 08:58

Are you peeing? I had numerous admissions on both pregnancies and one of the times I hadn't peed in 12 hours. Also if you are peeing how dark is it? Also if you are admitted see if they will give you IV B vitamins! They're like a miracle cure for increasing your energy levels! Is this your first baby? Also I wouldnt drink Bovril as its way too salty. Melon and ice pops are good sources of fluid.

Dranktoomuchpepsi · 02/05/2020 09:00

Change its the OP I'd be worried for, not the 'baby' that isn't even into second trimester. This woman needs support and medical help involving drugs and fluid

Changedname78 · 02/05/2020 09:03

@Dranktoomuchpepsi
Definitely!! Of course!! As a pregnant mum though your thoughts usually go to your baby that’s all I was getting at

Pregnancy Sickness Support
024 7638 2020
They can help you for the rest of your pregnancy. You can get information on where to go next in terms of treatment and get a Peer Supporter who can help you.
You do need to be seen though. I wouldn't bother with 111 just go in A&E should be pretty quiet. Good Luck xx

handmademitlove · 02/05/2020 09:05

Call your midwife / GP and ask for a pack of test strips to use at home. My midwife recommended this after multiple admissions as I could just call if I reached a trigger level.

SilentAndQuietLight · 02/05/2020 09:05

Ketones don't assess hydration, but rather whether you're getting adequate nutrition. Agree it sounds like you should be seen OP, and I would contact midwife first.

Sorry you're feeling so rough. Pregnancy is shit. Flowers

culleyace · 02/05/2020 09:06

I had severe hyperemeses when I was pregnant and spent a vast amount of time in hospital.
The only anti sickness meds that helped was a combination of ondansetron, buccastem & cyclizine.
I recommend buying some ketostrips from a chemist to keep an eye on your keytones as I ended up in severe ketoidacidosis.
I was told to try and eat but fluids were more important.
I really feel for you it's a horrible thing to deal with and I hope you feel better soon.

Pregnantandoversick · 02/05/2020 09:06

Still peeing which makes me think I'm keeping more fluids down than the last admissions, and it's not very dark.

GreyishDays · 02/05/2020 09:10

When you are admitted before, what ward were you on? If it was ante natal I’d phone your midwife as the route to getting seen there.

Bienentrinkwasser · 02/05/2020 09:17

Just go to A&E. You don’t need to ask for 111s permission.

crispysausagerolls · 02/05/2020 09:26

111 are pointless.

Call your midwife or just get DH to take you to a and e.

JustOneSquareofDarkChocolate · 02/05/2020 09:29

No need to go via 111 here. Sending paramedics costs £675 per call out not to mention the opportunity cost.

AlwaysCheddar · 02/05/2020 09:32

Go to a&e or call your midwife. I’d bypass 111.

MsJaneAusten · 02/05/2020 09:33

111 or paramedics don’t decide who is admitted. Do you have a partner who drives? If so, just go to A&E - even better, call or present at a maternity unit.

Marmie4 · 02/05/2020 09:34

I really feel for you, I suffered exactly the same, I would get to a point where my only option was to be admitted, on a drip, then I would temporarily feel well again. No meds seem to work, but you will get through it and it will be worth it. I tried alternative medicines, my doctor suggested me having half a stout or guiness every night! Ate ginger, wore a sickness band, nothing relieved it. Go to A and E, get some rest and hope you pick up soon.

Bluetonic41 · 02/05/2020 09:43

Please dont call an ambulance for hyperemesis! It's a complete waste of resources! Are 11 week pregnancies counted as being under gynae not maternity? They are with us, if so ring your emergency gynae unit or epau and see what they suggest. Often you are on 'open accees' if they have seen you before, if not ED or OOH can refer directly. It could well be that if you arent in ketosis they may just give you an injection and look at your meds. Ondanseteon has some cautions now so may be worth trying the prochloperazine buccal which is absorbed directly into your gum so you cant vomit it back up.

Outdoorsybynature · 02/05/2020 09:44

2 hg pregnancies here, a gp told me to put sugar in non caffeine coke until it goes flat and then sip that to rehydrate, this worked and standard fizzy lemon type drinks then worked better than water for staying down. For ages I could eat one plain baked potato and that was the only thing I could eat, I think it was the salt. There were many many days I couldn't eat. You're doing well and you'll get through this. Whatever works to get hydrated and then one day at a time. It will end and become a horrible memory you've just got to endure and do the best you can to not let it break you. If you keep anything down long enough to get your blood sugar up a tiny bit it will help you feel less nauseous and help you get back to stable. Thinking of you, it does end and you get your life back but it's living hell while you're suffering.

rossKemp · 02/05/2020 09:49

I’m so sorry to hear you’re suffering. My pregnancy was similar.

If you’re keeping some fluids down and passing urine which isn’t dark or malodorous I think the risk associated with admission is higher than what you’re currently experiencing.

As a safe middle ground it may be worth discussing alternative anti emetics with a dr through 111. I had a combination of cyclising three times and a day and buccal Buccastem. They helped take the edge off

Good luck

BlueCookieMonster · 02/05/2020 09:51

Lovely, if the meds aren't helping, just go to A and E. HG is horrid, you won't be wasting anyones time.
