To spend this much

DH wants to spend appx 6% of our household income on groceries (2 adults, 1 toddler & BF baby). It's really tight. I'd prefer to spend 10%. That would make meal planning, shopping & cooking everyday so much easier.

And, if you don't mind sharing, appx what % of household income do you spend on groceries?

Our salary is just over 8k per month and at the moment we’re spending about £1600 per month on groceries (including cleaning products and alcohol) pus £100 on takeaways. So that’s 25%.

FuzzyPuffling · 01/05/2020 18:46

About 30% but we are very poor!

Nquartz · 01/05/2020 18:46

I've just worked ours out, it's 5-6% which seems very low but from reading numerous threads on here over the years that we don't spend a lot on food

MrsTWH · 01/05/2020 18:47

% doesn’t make it comparable really. You need real spend.

For example, I “only” spend 5% of our family income on groceries. But that is a relatively large sum I think because we earn a lot. 5% of 20k income is a lot less than 5% of a 200k income!

Cookeveryday · 01/05/2020 18:48

Ok been up since 3am (car alarm went off and I couldn't get back to sleep) and I've had a few drinks so it made sense to me but maybe my thinking was off 😁 I'll ask again with out %.

DH wants to spend £240 p/m, I want to spend £400. Household income is 4k.

Your DH is being ridiculous.

Puds11 · 01/05/2020 18:49

For how many people?

TheRoyallingStones · 01/05/2020 18:49

It’s meaningless without knowing what it’s a % of

10% of minimum wage is a world away from 10% of a footballers salary!

Puds11 · 01/05/2020 18:50

Oooops, just saw. I think 400 is fine.

coldlighthappier · 01/05/2020 18:50

There’s probably a middle ground, £240 seems a tad low but £400 seems quite high to me

HermanHermit · 01/05/2020 18:50

Get your dh to do the shopping for a few weeks on his proposed budget. He’s being utterly mean.

superram · 01/05/2020 18:50

Your DJ wants you all to starve-I’m not sure that is doable.

LagunaBubbles · 01/05/2020 18:50

I had no idea but
just worked it out, its 20%.

sleepwhenidie · 01/05/2020 18:50

Just as it’s what you asked for, ours is probably around 20% (family of 5 and income more than 6 figures). We could get closer to 10% by giving up premium products, meat/fish, treats and alcohol, 6% would feel like very very hard work.

Cookeveryday · 01/05/2020 18:51

It's for 2 adults, toddler and BF baby (both in nappies). Obviously all home all the time at the moment.

OP posts:
BrieAndChilli · 01/05/2020 18:51

Yes we need to know how many people and ages (a 2 year old is going to eat a lot less than a 15 year old!)
Plus are there any dietary requirements that may mean you need to buy more expensive foods and does your DH insist on loads of alcohol or steaks? All will make a difference to your spend.

sleepwhenidie · 01/05/2020 18:52

What herman said - send him out grocery shopping with £240 for a month! he is totally clueless

couchlover · 01/05/2020 18:52

Never thought about it as a percentage surely you nut what you need.

I've just spent about £235 but hopefully that will last close to two weeks with only a little top up. I think we easily spend £500 a month not including take aways but that does include alcohol (£62.50 of todays bill was alcohol as I bought three bottles of spirits). That's probably a little over 10% of our pay.

Apolloanddaphne · 01/05/2020 18:52

£400 p/m sounds more realistic. Ask your DH to meal plan and shop to his budget for a month and see how he gets on?

RandomMess · 01/05/2020 18:52

He's being ridiculously tight especially if it includes toilet rolls, cleaning stuff, washing powder etc.

devildeepbluesea · 01/05/2020 18:53

Used to be about 10%. Nowadays it's more like 30%!! But of course the booze bill has soared...

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 01/05/2020 18:53

We are same (2 Adults, 2 kids - 3 and 1) income around the same and spend about £450, but it also includes nappies, wipes, Cleaning products etc. I don’t consider us massively extravagant but no way could we budget to £240, especially not in lock down. But then it does depend on what your other bills are I guess?! It’s all about what you can actually afford?!

Quarantined · 01/05/2020 18:53

I wouldn't manage with that budget. Agree get him to work out how to manage it for a month or so, see how that works out.

mumof2exhausted · 01/05/2020 18:55

We are spending about £200 a week at the moment which is a lot but it’s 2 adults and 2 kids eating 3 meals a day (cooked from scratch) and a zillion snacks (the kids).

DerbyshireGirly · 01/05/2020 18:56

Our take home is £3500 between us and we spend around £350 a month on food for the two of us - so 10%, although I'd never thought of it in those terms before.
