I have to admit, I cried.

I'm not being UR.

All that the US protests have achieved, @LilacTree1, is localised hotspots of infection. Is that what you're thanking goodness for? I suppose it's a good illustration of Darwin's law in action.

Bellagio40 · 01/05/2020 07:48

OP I am in CT and Lamont is talking about a phased re-opening starting on May 20th if hospital admissions continue to decline and if the businesses in question can show they can keep people apart eg restaurants allowing outdoor dining only.

Biscuit0110 · 01/05/2020 07:54

1st of June is not so far away. It might feel like a world away but it is already 3 weeks and a few days, but at least you have a date now. Something to work towards. Our lockdown is indefinite here at the moment in the UK - no dates and no idea if and when it will end. It is shit. No question, but what can we do? Plan something wonderful every week until you get there Flowers

Hunnybears · 01/05/2020 07:54

People can argue the toss as to what should/shouldn’t happen regarding lockdown and it’s not to say either side is wrong.

There are positives and negatives for extended lockdown and some ‘leaders’ and taken taken different strategies.

Sweden is an interesting example as their death toll seems to be lower than other countries. They’re going for some kind of herd immunity.

It will be interring to tell when this is all over, which countries implemented the correct strategy so not to enter a Great Depression but neither lose too many lives

Womanlywiles · 01/05/2020 07:57

All these twits at the protests if they are still working outside the home and are recognized, are being told to stay home and self-quarantine for two weeks because their co-workers are complaining that by attending large gatherings they are potentially exposing others to COVID.

Not the sharpest knives in the drawer ....

Smelborp · 01/05/2020 08:00

I thought you meant it was 1st June now. Time has no meaning anymore.

JacobReesMogadishu · 01/05/2020 08:02

I’ve been told I’m wfh until at least sept. But guess that doesn’t mean there will be a social lockdown until then.

TypingError · 01/05/2020 08:03

When you all in the US say lockdown, are you actually not allowed out of the house, e.g for a walk or to get supplies? In UK we're asked to only go out once daily for exercise, and we can shop with social distancing. I wouldn't call that actual lockdown and am personally not finding it too difficult. Needs must etc. Would be a different story if I couldn't actually go outside. Ever.

Womanlywiles · 01/05/2020 08:14

Lots of factors come in when looking at a population's exposure and its risk factors. Sweden only has a population of 10 million people. They are relatively homogenous with native Swedes being 80%. They don't have a great deal of inequality or poverty. They are a rich nation with equal access to health care. The average Swede can easily self isolate and/or socially distance. The population has also been willing to listen to a scientist who is the voice of leadership duing the pandemic. The Swedes have been careful not to politicize their health decisions.

The USA has a population of 350 million, it is very diverse, with many racial, ethnic, and cultural groups. By politicians leading the response (Trump especially) the response had become very politicized as a result and extremely confused. The USA has 1 million known cases so far (it is probably much higher as they have only managed to test less than 1% of the population.)

I could go on. You get my drift. You cannot remotely compare a country like Sweden with the USA or India or Brazil or really anywhere else except perhaps other Scandinavian nations, and they have less than 10% of the deaths in Sweden.

Until testing is widely available it is a crap shoot to make any judgement call on your risk and exposure to the virus. I will stick to listening to public health professionals with pandemic experience such as Dr. Anthony Fauci.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 01/05/2020 08:29

@Witchesandwizards That's horrible for you . Flowers

Bouledeneige · 01/05/2020 08:36

I live in London and the thought of going back to work in central London getting on a crowded tube again is not a happy one. And I have no ida how social distancing will work on public transport if that reduces capacity by a two-thirds or more. My employer is talking about a phased return to work once it is permitted but I'm sure we wont all be going back 5 days a week for a long time if ever.

I have always imagined this is a very long term process. Plan for the worst and hope for the best. I doubt I will be back working in the centre of town before September.

3746xvy734 · 01/05/2020 08:46

I hear you OP For me, is also the shock that governments worldwide think it’s okay to quarantine healthy people

I agree with you LilacTree

People cannot see this for what it really is and can be very easily manipulated and don't get it till it's too late. I feel sorry for our future generations. We must each do the right thing as our conscious dictates. Flowers

3746xvy734 · 01/05/2020 08:48

conscience!

SusieOwl4 · 01/05/2020 08:48

Sweden does have rules in place and people are abiding by them . Their population density is also very small .

As is the USA actually high population but over a massive area so in theory their rate of infection should be low.

The uk has a much higher population density than Italy for example but also the age demographics are relevant .

So it is not a good idea to compare death rates between countries really . Especially as they are being reported in different ways in different countries .

IndiaMay · 01/05/2020 08:51

Thank goodness for US protests.

To be fair, and I don't agree with the protests as obviously the virus spreads this way. But the US have been given little to no financial help. In the UK the majority of people are getting 80% - 100% of their pay each month if they cant work. I cant find the article now, but less than 25% of working Americans received a pay cheque in march. I have a lot of family in the US and they're still waiting on this mystical $1500 one off payment that they're supposed to get. They havent been paid for 8 weeks and that payment is what they would make in 2 weeks. I can understand the protests as people are being left to live on fresh air

DodgyTrousers · 01/05/2020 08:52

Lilactree

Wtf? Are you on glue..

puffinandkoala · 01/05/2020 08:52

Medical professions

Probably, as they will be seeing the impact on their patients when their non-covid conditions get worse, or they just can't treat them eg dentists who can't do a simple filling.

It's not nearly as simple as lockdown=good, those who are against it=bad. Far more nuance required but people aren't good at nuance or critical thinking.

Even in New Zealand where they've handled this very well I wonder what the collateral damage is in terms of other health conditions.

And Trump didn't say drink bleach. Did anyone actually read what he said or did they just listen to the media's trumped-up (pun intended) headlines?

Inkpaperstars · 01/05/2020 08:53

People cannot see this for what it really is

What is it then?

tiredanddangerous · 01/05/2020 08:54

Surely being on lockdown til 1st June is better than potentially being seriously ill, or dead? It’s a month ffs!

Gawdsake2020 · 01/05/2020 08:57

Better to be safe at home than dead, no?

PrivateD00r · 01/05/2020 09:02

You cried because your husband has been told to work from home for another month?

zafferana · 01/05/2020 09:03

Cabin fever IS real, but if that's all you're suffering from then you're lucky. If you're in a typical NYC apartment then I do feel sorry for you, as they are not designed for spending long periods of time in, they often don't have balconies, even if they do the balconies are tiny and usually freezing/windy or boiling hot (depending on the season). But the whole world is pretty much in the same boat as you. Here in the UK we're also locked down with no end in sight, no safe way for people to return to work/school, no safe way to allow mass use of public transport, no safe way for many businesses to reopen. It's shit. None of us asked for this and many are ill-prepared, but if you have a safe home and a secure income, try to count your blessings.

zafferana · 01/05/2020 09:06

And the fuckwits in the US protesting - yep words fail me too. Stupid fucking selfish twats, the lot of them. Like all Trump voters. I'm all right Jack and fuck everyone else.

Inkpaperstars · 01/05/2020 09:06

And Trump didn't say drink bleach. Did anyone actually read what he said or did they just listen to the media's trumped-up (pun intended) headlines?

Oh I listened to what he said. About fifty times. Have to find humour where we can these days, although obviously the risk of anyone killing themselves by following his advice makes it less funny.

If I remember he was commenting on the fact that certain disinfectants can destroy virus particles on surfaces. He turned to the medical experts to suggest that maybe there was a way to use that disinfectant to kill the virus in the body by injecting, or 'some sort of cleaning'. He then went on to speak of UV light potentially destroying the virus and whether we could put UV light or extreme heat 'inside the body'.

If it wasn't so serious it would be hilarious. Even though it is so serious, I still couldn't even type it without laughing.

What does it say though really, that he wastes time on this dangerous nonsense, that could be spent accomplishing something? Apparently these comments came shortly after he had been informed that Biden is thrashing him in the polls. The campaign advisors had begged him to stop the conferences. Which he now has for the moment but he obviously wanted to go out with a bang.

Instead he is now asking Westpoint graduates to return from across the U.S. to campus (they had been sent home to isolate for their own protection as well as others). He and his ego need an live audience for his commencement address. Well, live at the time of the speech, he's not bothered if they die afterwards because that won't affect the ratings.

HelloItsmeAgain1 · 01/05/2020 09:08

@ilovesooty you do realise what the rest of the world thinks of that right?
