Help! Eaten yogurt 10 days out of date

nightimebrowser · 30/04/2020 20:36

Didn't realise and I've been eating them for 3 days (individual pots) been feeling fine and they all looked and tasted as normal. Google says it's okay with yogurt 1-2 weeks past use by but I'm still freaking out as I have emetophobia and I'm usually so on it with food dates 😭😭
Sorry I know this isn't an AIBU I just need quick help and reassurance 😂

Yoghurt is basically milk gone bad on the way to being cheess so no worries!

eaglejulesk · 01/05/2020 04:58

Well said @DramaAlpaca. I hate to think how much food is wasted because of dates on containers. I know people who throw stuff out once the date is reached, it's madness!

nightimebrowser · 01/05/2020 05:04

Haven't slept, I know it sounds ridiculous but my emetophobia (fear of being sick) is causing my anxiety to be sky high! I know the risk is so so low re sickness from the yogurt but it's still in the back of my mind. Sad

Oh goodness, don’t worry. If it tasted fine, it’s fine. If it didn’t, you wouldn’t have eaten it. And even if you did, you would be fine. And even if you weren’t fine, you wouldn’t be seriously sick.

I don’t generally check dates. I smell and look. This means I will eat most stuff way behind it’s date. I will eat chicken and fish a few days after too, if it’s smells ok. Sometimes it doesn’t smell ok the day before the use by date so a lot of factors involved

There is lots to worry about just now. This is not one of them!

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 01/05/2020 05:10

Ps you would have been sick by now anyway.

debrasmith · 01/05/2020 05:13

Should be fine as long as you scrape the mould off the top 👍

I am with you op. I have severe emetephobia. Last week I had two massive cups of tea with milk I later realised was out of date. I was so upset and panicked.

Google said food poisoning can take 72 hours to kick in (!) so I remained upset and panicked until that time had elapsed.

It's an awful phobia. Last night I chucked my dinner in the bin half eaten (home made burger DP had made) as I suddenly felt panicked mid-bite that I saw a tiny bit of pink (or was it ketchup? Who knows) but I couldn't take the risk.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/05/2020 05:35

I've also scraped the mould off yogurt, I buy the big Lidl buckets and sometimes it takes a while to get through them. Also agree that yogurt is fine for at least a week or two after the date. Same for cream. My record for packaged dairy is feta that was 8 months past. Tasted totally fine and no ill effects.

I despair at the reliance on dates that are ridiculously conservative and cause so much food waste. I've heard of people who throw things away before the date if they've had it a few days 'to be sure'.

OP, i routinely ignore the dates and use my own judgement. Before the shop closed, a large part of what I ate came from the reduced counter at the M&S food that I passed on the way home from work so many things were a day or two out of date. I've had food poisoning once in the last 30 years and that was almost certainly due to a prepacked sandwich bought from the work canteen that would have been well in date and produced to the strictest hygiene standards.

If you're not sleeping due to this, that's a very extreme reaction, you need help. You can't let a phobia rule your life like this.

Wallywobbles · 01/05/2020 05:40

Yoghurt never goes off. It becomes disgusting but will never do you harm.

If they were fresh, as in not frozen, pink in the middle can't make you sick. If anything slightly pink is generally desired for juiciness. I get that it's a phobia, but would learning what and when can make someone sick help to cope with day to day things? Same with the milk. It wasn't spoiled. You would certainly know that the coffee in your hot drink is off and would not drink it.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 01/05/2020 08:43

I think people need to realise that sell by (that one even says it!), best before and use by dates are not really here for us customers... They are there for the manufacturers and sellers to keep their side safer from lawsuits and complaints about quality.

saraclara · 01/05/2020 08:44

The yoghurt has already passed through your stomach, OP. There's no way out can make you sick now.

And there's a reason that yoghurt is made, historically and traditionally. It's made in order to make milk edible for a very long time!

Divebar · 01/05/2020 08:53

It drives me nuts that people throw food out without actually examining it to see if it’s ok. It’s so wasteful.

AJPTaylor · 01/05/2020 08:57

You would have upchucked by now so time to put that worry in a box and close and the lid.

whatdoyoudonow · 01/05/2020 09:02

Are you still with us OP? Wink

nightimebrowser · 01/05/2020 17:42

@whatdoyoudonow I am indeed Grin thank you everyone!

My mum, who is the queen of food past it’s date, ate some Philadelphia that was 9 months out of date last week. She’s fine.

I had no idea that Philadelphia cheese was available in the UK. I mix some in with mashed potatoes, along with sour cream and butter. It's fab.

OP you'll be fine. Yogurt is quite stable.

Lordfrontpaw · 01/05/2020 17:54

As long as it’s not opened it should be ok. I draw the line at black, purple or white fluffy mould.

BikeRunSki · 01/05/2020 18:06

I can’t ever remember it not being available in the UK. I’m nearly 50 and have lived here all my life.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 01/05/2020 18:33

If you are still alive, there is nothing to worry about. If you have died because you ate the ten day old yoghurt , then there is nothing to worry about either. Did you rinse and clean the yoghurt carton before putting it in the recycling bin? If not, then you are doomed whether alive or dead.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/05/2020 18:40

Ok so here’s one... I made a rather nice Napoli sauce the evening before yesterday. So it’s a basic vegan tomato sauce.

For a number of reasons (slack ass) I completely forgot about it (don’t drink and cool) and see it is still sitting in a corner (still covered).

Votes are open - heat and eat tonight or not?

CHIRIBAYA · 02/05/2020 19:20

I've had yoghurts over three months past their UBD and been fine.

fluffiphlox · 02/05/2020 19:24

Why do you think you need help? If they were off you wouldn’t have been able to eat them. You need to be less melodramatic.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/05/2020 19:47

I’m not sure of Ive ever really seen ‘off’ yoghurt. I only have the plain bit can imaging anything with fruit in it could go mouldy. If it’s not open I’d usually eat it.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 02/05/2020 19:57

This week we've had BB 2018 tinned custard and BB2016 date tinned fruit - clearing out cupboards. Grin
