How much Vitamin D should you take if deficient

Especially if the reporting is showing that the disproportionate number of deaths amongst people of colour seem to be suggesting that they cannot absorb vit d in the usual way. Is there a recommendation to how much they should take.
I am really hoping that my musings don't make me sound like Trump during "bleachgate" Hmm.

I have vit d deficiency. I take 2 x 800iu a day. I'm not sure if that helps you or not 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 29/04/2020 16:17

Somewhere between the normal recommended dose (10 micrograms per day) and the maximum (100 micrograms per day).

But if you think you may be deficient then phone your GP for proper advice - they are open for business and many are less busy than usual.

NHS says take 10ug. Also says the maximum you can take is 100ug. It is sometimes expressed in IU - 10ug is 400IU. You wouldn't know if you were deficient without testing.

I have got my kids 10ug spray vitamin D3
I got myself a tablet vitamin D3 that is 1000IU which is 25ug
Dh takes a multivitamin that includes it

honeycrumpet · 29/04/2020 16:18

I got an email from Boots this morning recommending that everyone take 10 mcg: www.boots.com/key-vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-d-advice

Xenia · 29/04/2020 16:20

I am not sure but don't over dose on it. It is much much better if you can get it from sunshine in the UK Spring to Autumn

slartibarti · 29/04/2020 16:20

It depends, not everyone absorbs vit D well
Best to get tested first, then test again after taking it for 6 months
Easy to test with blood spot from online site.
I use Better You, prices is reasonable and vit d spray included. When you get result they tell you how much to take to bring levels up and how much needed for maintenance.

Thanks everyone, so supplements seem to be the way forward. I personally would prefer to not take pills but instead adjust my diet, but that seems like a massive waste of time.

I believe the max amount is 4,000 IU (250 mcg) - though some say you can take more safely. Recommended is 400 IU/day or 10 micrograms.

It's also advisbale to take vit K, apparently stops calcium build up in arteries and also magesium as it helps process the vit D and increasing D can lead to deficiency in magenesium. That's what I've read anyway.

You can get test kits on amazon to test vitamin d levels - though when I last looked they weren't in stock.

dementedpixie · 29/04/2020 16:25

4000IU is 100ug not 250ug

enjoyingSun · 29/04/2020 16:28

Sorry I copied it from Healthline webpage - but your right it's an error I didn't spot.

Blimey. That goes into my list of 'websites not to trust' then.

I have been taking vitamin d supplements, 17 mg a day, is this okay does anyone know?

dementedpixie · 29/04/2020 21:08

10ug recommended, 100ug maximum so 17ug sounds ok

ToldYouOnce · 29/04/2020 21:22

Thanks @dementedpixie

You take the amount the doctor prescribes, after having had a Vit D test. The amount taken depends on how serious the deficiency is. If it isn't prescribed by a doctor you shouldn't take it.

That’s the case for many supplements, but with vitamin D PHE advise that everyone takes vitamin d over winter.

biddybid73 · 29/04/2020 21:49

It's extremely difficult to get all the vitamin D you need just from the diet as there are few foods containing vitaMin D.

The main source is your body making it from sunlight during the months of April to October. There are recommendations for everyone to take a supplement over the winter and for some groups to take one all year round.

If you are already deficient you definitely need a supplement to get your levels back to the healthy range.

Kitchendoctor · 29/04/2020 21:54

Our friend Dr John Campbell on the subject...

Crinkle77 · 29/04/2020 22:16

Depends how deficient you are. I had levels of 17 and was given loading dose of 20,000 once a day for a week then once a week for a few weeks. I now take a maintenance dose a 3000iu spray from Holland and Barrett.

ifeeltheneedtheneedforsleep · 29/04/2020 22:16

I suffer from deficiencies if I'm not supplemented - initially the doctor put me on a high dose and once I had a good amount in my system I went to 10ug per day(the recommended maintenance dose). Best to have your levels checked by go though

People who are overweight probably need more vitamin D.
I get my levels tested every year and was told 1000iu for every 25 kg of body weight initially for maintenance (higher dose needed if deficient).
My weight is 54Kg, over the past 3 years my levels have been consistently around 80-90 nmols/L on 2000iu a day in winter and just sun exposure from Apr - Sept.
