How much Vitamin D should you take if deficient

Especially if the reporting is showing that the disproportionate number of deaths amongst people of colour seem to be suggesting that they cannot absorb vit d in the usual way. Is there a recommendation to how much they should take.
I am really hoping that my musings don't make me sound like Trump during "bleachgate" Hmm.

Is vitamin D3 the same as vitamin D?

honeycrumpet · 30/04/2020 11:11

Yes ToldYouOnce here's the explanation from the Boots website:

Vitamin D2 & D3
The two most important forms of vitamin D you can find are D2 and D3. D2 is produced by plants, and D3 is made by your skin from sunlight. Research shows that D3 is generally better absorbed by the body than D2, so it may be worth taking a vitamin D3 supplement or one that contains enough of both.

Vitamin D3 supplements are usually suitable for vegetarians but, depending on the type you buy, they may not be suitable for vegans – so it’s worth checking the individual product labels. Vitamin D2 can be suitable for vegans.

It's very common to be deficient in Vitamin D and very hard to overdose on it.

I had my levels checked in September as part of fertility investigations, after the end of a long hot summer where I got plenty of sun. (I also live in continental Europe and have pale skin.) My level then was 31ng/mL, with 30 being the lower limit for the recommended range.

For most of the winter months I've been supplementing with 4000 IU per day and when I had me levels checked again yesterday I was at 54ng/mL, which is nicely in the middle of the recommended range and way below the level which would indicate toxicity.

Avocuddles · 30/04/2020 11:34

I'm pregnant and take 1000IU a day on the advise of my doctor. Prior to falling pregnant I was taking 1 25000IU prescription tablet every month along with a lower dose on a daily basis....

ToldYouOnce · 30/04/2020 18:34

@honeycrumpet thank you

AvoidingTheWineAisle · 30/04/2020 18:39

@Crinkle77

I was the same as you. My level was very low (12) and I was given loading dose of 20,000 once a day for a week, then once a week for a few weeks.

I take a maintenance dose of 4,000 iu per day all year round now. I get my levels tested every Spring (levels can be lowest after the winter months).

TwoBlueFish · 30/04/2020 18:55

I’ve been tested and am vitamin d deficient, I take 1000iu daily.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 30/04/2020 20:24

When I was diagnosed as deficient in Vitamin D by GP following a blood test, I was prescribed one 50,000 i.u. phial to be taken weekly for six weeks followed by 800 i.u. tablet per day thereafter. I was told that the level changes very slowly so I can only have an annual blood test for it.

Don't worry there's 20 years of evidence showing that vitamin D3 is a key factor in your immune system (it's actually a steroid hormone):

Blood samples have been taken from covid 19 patients in New Orleans, Indonesia and the Philippines (nearly all severe cases have had massive deficiency, but media don't want to talk about it because vitamin D3 is very, very inexpensive):

Doingtheboxerbeat · 05/05/2020 11:32

@LWJ70 yes yes, that's exactly what I was referring to - the link of covid-19 deaths to the lack of vitamin d. I was beginning to think I dreamt the whole conversation.

I've been vitamin defficient a few times, only recently I wasnt feeling too well so had blood test at the doctor's and they were low but not low enough for them to give me the vitamin d3 on prescription, was told told to take an over the counter vitamin supplement, so I got the Wellwoman ones. I still wasn't feeling well despite taking them for 3 months so I went back and they took more bloods and my vitamin d was lower than it was and I was taking the vitamins.
I was prescribed the highest dosage of vitamin d ,1 pill a week for 6 weeks then told to take an over the counter vitamin d at least 800iu from now on.
I ordered some vitamin d3 from Amazon there called higher nature which I've taken in the past and they work. They aren't expensive and you get 120 I have to they are 500iu per capsule but I take 2 so I'm getting more than enough. If you not deficient then just one should do for you.

Indian study out today, 176 covid 19 patients (previously checked serum levels).

Same findings as the New Orleans, Indonesian and Philippines studies:

100% of critical patients less than 75 years old had Vitamin D insufficiency
