Just read on the BBC that in France and Spain(for the majority of schools) they will start in September when the new school year starts.

This would be a massive relief to me and reduce the worry over my son catching covid-19 at school.

Everything is up in the air at the moment, but the situation in France at least is complicated. Departments are likely to be color coded according to risk with more restrictions in red departments than green ones. Returns to school may be more limited or gradual in red departments. The scientific council has made various recommendations regarding the return to school, some of which may be very difficult to keep to in practice. The return to school is on a voluntary basis so some parents may choose to keep their kids off anyway, which will affect numbers of students and adjustments on a school by school basis.

They'll be no schools open until September

Can you post a link to your source please @aquashiv? In which country do you mean?

we are hugely damaging many children's futures the longer this goes on.

Are we? I don't think we are. It's a few weeks so far, potentially a few months. In the grand scheme of children's futures it really isn't going to be damaging. It will be a long time before school returns to normal even when they do go back. That's probably more 'damaging' (although I don't think it is)

I understand there are a lot of kids who need the safety net of school and a lot of parents who need the school so they can work, but ultimately I don't think schools being closed for a few months will be hugely damaging to the kids futures.

How many years of higher taxes & poorer public services will we have? My kids will be harmed by that.

I predict high inflation rules for at least the next 10 years, only way to pay down the huge national debt, which is mostly going to harm older adults (including me) who have savings.

The Scottish government have said openly that Scottish schools are not expected to be back until after the summer . The first minister has always been open about this even before the schools were closed

Actually what she said was the nation should not expect. Not that she did not expect them to be open. There is a difference there. I wouldn’t say anything is clear because what she has repeatedly, latterly said is she just doesn’t know.

I work for an LA - senior role - daily contact with DfE - as I keep saying - there is NO information about a date for schools to open up to anyone other than key workers and vulnerable pupils for which they are caring for now.

Wakeup
I agree. Some people have said though they need the schools open in order for them to work. For some, it is very much about childcare.
The other questions still need answering.
How do we manage social distancing? How do we operate with not enough adults for a ‘normal’ school day? How do we manage those children who need extra support, not only for their education but because of their behaviour, when we don’t have all the adults in we would usually have, and there weren’t enough adults to go round before the crisis?

umpteentimes · 29/04/2020 13:16

Will nurseries go back when schools do or before?

AnnSmiley · 29/04/2020 14:10

Good point about childcare vs schooling. I'd rather my DC was at their wonderful school as usual, but I'm almost at the point of taking anything.

We all need to seriously consider how to make school or childcare facilities as safe as possible for everyone - but equally, having children at home for months on end will cause such a huge problem for society and the economy, without even mentioning the effects on many people's mental health.
