To ask if you've been stopped by police and asked why you're out?

I've been out and about a LOT during lockdown. My reasons are legitimate (doing deliveries is the bulk of it) but that wouldn't be immediately obvious to a bystander when I'm driving around in an unbranded hatchback.

I've not been asked why I'm out of the house by a police officer even once since lockdown began, which surprises me. I live in a very urban area, and have seen plenty of them. I don't know anyone who has been stopped and asked. I'm curious to see if this is widespread.

YABU = I've been stopped by the police since lockdown began
YANBU = I haven't been stopped by the police

I know a couple of people who have been stopped. 👮‍♂️

One was a twat at work who drove 40 miles to pickup something non essential he bough online, got stopped and questioned on the last couple of miles then told to turn around and go home 🤣

GoodbyeToCare · 28/04/2020 15:31

A friend is a Police officer and spoke to chap who was swimming in the sea. Turns out he's driven here from a city 5 hours away to enjoy the beach and the surf. He was told to get back to his own home.

dogcrazy · 28/04/2020 15:37

I haven’t been stopped but my dad has.

Wejustdontknow · 28/04/2020 15:38

I am currently working nights 10pm-6am and as I don’t drive I either use public transport or walk depending on the timetable. I have seen many police cars pass me but none have stopped to ask me what I am doing which I am surprised by with the times I am out and about tbh

Mumek · 28/04/2020 15:41

Stopped on Sunday by very friendly officer (road block) Sunday afternoon. Explained we were going to Church graveyard - his reply was 'no problem, we are just trying to stop folk driving around randomly. The route we were on lead to the Peak District. Some cars were turned back .

SprinklesMcDoodles · 28/04/2020 15:41

I’ve been stopped on my way to work twice. I’ve just explained that I work at a disease surveillance institute and shown my staff pass. No issues at all.

Fluffymule · 28/04/2020 15:42

The local police in my area seem to have launched an uninsured driver/car initiative this month. They been very vocal about it on their social media channels, and have been having an impressive amount of success, if the growing total of photos of impounded cars is anything to go by.

I have wondered whether this has been helped by the additional focus on why drivers might be out and about in the first place, or that the uninsured cars are easier to find, parked outside of homes because the drivers are not out on the roads.

CottonSock · 28/04/2020 15:42

Asked why I was standing still in park. Was watching kids on bikes nearby age 3 and 6.

baysidediner · 28/04/2020 15:43

That's right @Becca19962014 if you are worried you should call. Even if it's just a buoy Grin

The sea swimmers and kite surfers are being so selfish going out at the moment

LilacTree1 · 28/04/2020 15:44

Cotton that must have been a weird conversation.

Wannabegreenfingers · 28/04/2020 15:49

I haven't and have had to drive to my office twice during lock down (I'm a key worker) I have paperwork and an ID card that shows this information should I be pulled over.

The only other times I have used my car is to do the supermarket shop once a week.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/04/2020 15:51

when it all first got going a significant number of dd's friends were stopped....heading to or from their carer jobs. Interestingly (or not) all those stopped were female, in spite of quite a few male friends also in the same/similar places of employment.

plominoagain · 28/04/2020 15:51

Stopped 3 times . All on the way to work . Once by the shift I was taking over from ! They let me go sharpish :D

YouAndMeAndTheDevilMakesThree · 28/04/2020 15:53

No, but I'm quite rural and there's hardly any police officers to cover a huge area.

Frage · 28/04/2020 15:56

The police were stopping people outside my house, but didn't stop me even though I was clearly not doing anything "essential"...

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 28/04/2020 15:56

They may know you’re volunteering from ANPR + other data gathering

Highly unlikely - I'm self employed, not volunteering. The car is officially owned by a family member 50 miles away, though it's insured to my address with me as main driver (I imagine that ownership details come up on ANPR before the precise nature of the insurance arrangements). There's nothing visible on the car to suggest it's being used for business purposes (eg it's not branded). Sometimes DDog comes along for the ride.

I'd be shocked if ANPR & government agencies were so joined up that they could work out I changed my business model a month ago, and am using this car to do it.

Nope. They're like baggage handlers - you know they exist but you never see them.

Bubblysqueak · 28/04/2020 15:59

DH on the way to work yesterday saw the car in front of him being waved into a layby check point but he wasn't.

HugeAckmansWife · 28/04/2020 16:02

I wish people, including the police, would remember that non essential work is still allowed. The gardener that was stopped was doing nothing wrong. A lot of tradespeople, especially outdoor ones can safely work observing SD and may not be covered by the various gov schemes.

cjpark · 28/04/2020 16:04

Yep, ALOT! we're in Cornwall and the police are scanning the dual carriageways for tourists daily.

LilacTree1 · 28/04/2020 16:04

OP oh you're self employed

I reckon it's even more likely they've joined the dots then.

Springcatkin · 28/04/2020 16:11

No. Did expect some when travelled 150 miles for ds to see his dad over Easter but no one.

Otherwise I dont go far - the shops are 5 mins walk away. Did see a couple of police on my way to the shops but they didnt say anything.
The police station is just around the corner tho so I do see a few

MorganKitten · 28/04/2020 16:12

Yes, but mainly because we have a mini station at my work so I know loads of them.

JellyfishandShells · 28/04/2020 16:14

No - there are more patrol cars about ( SW London ) but they weren’t stopping anyone: think they were rather more interested in deterring the boy racers who have decided trafficless streets make a good race track, going by local Police Twitter.

Fespital · 28/04/2020 16:14

I live in a tourist area but all the tourist attractions are closed so not much point visiting! Local police are saying where they have patrolled, what advice they have given or whether there's been no issues. Have been very impressed locally.
