To ask if you've been stopped by police and asked why you're out?

I've been out and about a LOT during lockdown. My reasons are legitimate (doing deliveries is the bulk of it) but that wouldn't be immediately obvious to a bystander when I'm driving around in an unbranded hatchback.

I've not been asked why I'm out of the house by a police officer even once since lockdown began, which surprises me. I live in a very urban area, and have seen plenty of them. I don't know anyone who has been stopped and asked. I'm curious to see if this is widespread.

YABU = I've been stopped by the police since lockdown began
YANBU = I haven't been stopped by the police

No I haven't and I go out every day. I don't drive and it's about a 40 minute walk to the supermarket which I do twice a week. I've seen plenty of police though.

lockdownbirthdayhelp · 28/04/2020 13:37

I haven't even seen any police but I'm not out much.

opticaldelusion · 28/04/2020 13:37

Nope. And I was sat on a bench the other day watching my kid throw stones in the creek (the HORROR. I'm a MURDERER. How dare I SIT DOWN OUTSIDE). Coppers rode past on their treaders and gave me a cheery wave and a hello.

Springersrock · 28/04/2020 13:37

Yes.

I’ve been stopped twice. Both times on the way to our yard to see to our horses. The first time he was a bit argumentative but let me go on my way. The second time she wished me good day and sent me on my way.

DH has been stopped a few times - he’s still working and has been out doing deliveries every day and they’ve just waved him on

I had seen police out and about everywhere but haven’t seen any for the last couple of weeks

makingmiracles · 28/04/2020 13:38

Nope. If I was I’d throw it back to them why they allowed a largish gathering to happen in my town last week and did nothing to disperse them....2 cars, one riot van and mounted division....all stood around watching, didn’t tell anyone to leave!!

TerrapinStation · 28/04/2020 13:41

I don't know anyone who has been stopped but I've seen quite a few police vehicles when out walking. I always have my dog with me so wouldn't expect them to waste their time stopping me.

otterturk · 28/04/2020 13:42

I sat down on the grass while walking in a nearby park (pregnant) ostensibly for a few minutes and fell asleep. A lovely police man and woman woke me up and asked if I was alright, I explained and said sorry, all was fine. No fines or rudeness from either side.

Hingeandbracket · 28/04/2020 13:44

As usual, haven't seen any Police recently.

oakleaffy · 28/04/2020 13:46

I take exercise in a place that has EXPLODED with runners, sunbathers, dog walkers..never seen it so busy.
A couple of police were there, parked up and outside their car.
I was walking home and stopped at over 2 metres to ask why they were there?..Evidently some idiots were trying to protest about 5G and climbing a mast.
Speaking to them was interesting....they said crime was down 33% and that many more people are out than normal on green spaces....{I'd noticed the same}..It seems to be a trend that people who never run or walk have suddenly taken it up!
They also said more people had been spitting and saying they had 'Coronavirus' to try and avoid contact..
Strangely police don't have PPE, only their stab vests which won't protect against a virus.

They were sensible police, not hassling anyone apart from having dispersed the protesters.

aerosocks · 28/04/2020 13:46

No, but I have been followed. Got to a roundabout in my town and a police car was coming the other way. I carried on to the bypass, the police car went right round the roundabout and came up behind me. Followed me for about half a mile, I turned left, and then again at the next roundabout into the petrol station. The police car went all the way round the roundabout and back towards the bypass. They were obviously checking where I was going.

BeyondMyWits · 28/04/2020 13:46

Yes, 3 times now, on the way to work early morning. Just asked where I was off to, "work", "have a great day...". Very civilised.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 28/04/2020 13:47

I’ve walked past officers on foot and in cars while out walking and we just wave at each other. I’ve driven past police cars on my way to work (school) too. No issues. I HAVE seen them stop and speak to groups of youths in bikes and split them up and send them away - in a friendly manner.

Jammydodger1981 · 28/04/2020 13:48

No but one laughed at me in Tesco Express the other day.

They’ve set up a one way system but the arrows in every aisle go in the same direction then down the back aisle to the tills. I must have had a really confused look on my face trying to work out how to do it!

FizzyPink · 28/04/2020 13:48

I was driving through central London a few weekends ago and there was a police cordon where they were pulling over cars at random to check where they were going

Becca19962014 · 28/04/2020 13:49

I have repeatedly. Three times today. Once going to get meds, once leaving pharmacy to get food and then again on way back. Didn't see them stop anyone else. I'm in agony from untreated injury so I'm hardly out for the hell of it in cold driving rain.

I've a daily prescription to collect so must go out every day.
I live alone with no space for more than two days worth of food max.

Rules have now changed in Wales and round here they're being really strict about it - apparently I can either have medication or food but not both (or have exercise once) and must go directly where I am going and back again and not go into another place. And no stopping except once. I need to stop, many times. I've diabetes so need to carry food - unfortunately not as easy as me just having a couple of jelly babies and blood sugar sorting itself out. There's no taxis and I struggle to even move right now.

It's not just today either. I was stopped over the weekend and mutiple times in recent weeks, so much so I now carry my council tax bill around to prove I live here and am not second home owner. To be frank I'm sick of it, not least because I've seen groups sitting around smoking and chatting AND I've lived here for over two decades it's not like they don't know me (I'm very rural!)

Staticelle · 28/04/2020 13:49

I was in the first week, I was advised it wasn't a good idea to be out with a pram Confused. Thankfully things seem to be more reasonable now. DH has to drive a lot with work and hasnt been stopped at all.

Alsohuman · 28/04/2020 13:49

No, but our police force is reasonable and has better things to do.

Aposterhasnoname · 28/04/2020 13:49

No, and I’m out daily for work, plus two supermarket trips a week, and trips to deliver shopping to my parents. I also have a short walk most days.

FakeFraudSquad · 28/04/2020 13:50

My elderly Dad has been out a grand total of twice to the post office to post business documents by recorded delivery. He was stopped by the police and not let go until they were given full details of the business and able to confirm that he was indeed the owner.

justaweeone · 28/04/2020 13:50

My Dh has just started a uni placement( food industry) they all have letters to say that they are going to work should they be stopped.

thecatneuterer · 28/04/2020 13:50

No, which is surprising as I'm doing a hell of a lot of driving around. I know of three people who have been stopped on their way to feed stray cat colonies (all quite late at night, which I'm guessing is part of the reason they were stopped). Apparently that wasn't a problem.

Becca19962014 · 28/04/2020 13:51

Yes they're doing a job, but stopping me that much when I've already explained is annoying, not to mention very painful.

lockdownbirthdayhelp · 28/04/2020 13:52

It seems to be a trend that people who never run or walk have suddenly taken it up!

It's likely because these people would have been in a gym, swimming pool or playing sports or even spending most of the day in work

saraclara · 28/04/2020 13:52

It seems to be a trend that people who never run or walk have suddenly taken it up!

I'm seeing this said a lot. But many of those people running probably used to get their exercise at the gym, or at their football/rugby/netball club. And if you're stuck in the house all day now, of course you'll be keener to go for a walk than you were when you were at work.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 28/04/2020 13:52

Saw one on a bike at the beach on sunday

They weren’t stopping anyone as far as I could see, but compared to a normal sunday in warm weather it was very quiet

I haven’t been out a lot Recently but thats also the last police officer ive seen in the village since dd was about 4 (they had a ‘word’ with me) and shes 18 Now
