..to want an aisle layout of my local supermarket?

This should be so easy for the stores to produce.
They must have the info to hand.

My local Tesco have introduced a one way system which works very well, but it would be brilliant to be able to write your shopping list in a better lane order.
I have a reasonable grasp of my local shop so know that it's veg > meat > dairy > ambient but I never can remember where the butter is.

Google found me this image which is what I would like, but with more detail than just Ambient for 6 aisles.

Next time I go, I am going to take a photo of all the aisle banners and hopefully post it on my local Facebook page

That would make life much easier wouldn't it. I'd love to write my list in the right order I'd be much quicker in the shop and less likely to miss things.

zozozoe · 28/04/2020 12:37

That’s a really good idea - so long as they don’t move things around.

JulietTango · 28/04/2020 12:39

We were saying this the other day. The one way system is fine but only if you can write your list in that order

Dyrne · 28/04/2020 12:40

Ooh I’ve memorised my local big Tesco’s layout and it makes shopping SO much easier. I can write my shopping list out and sort it into aisle order, makes it much more orderly and shortened the amount of time it takes to shop. I really notice the difference when I go to a different shop I’m not familiar with. Would thoroughly recommend if you have one main shop you stick to!

I’ve not actually ventured to the big Tesco since lockdown began but I’m sure it’d have definitely come in handy with the one way systems etc!

BruceAndNosh · 28/04/2020 12:40

My shop don't do a lot of aisle moving apart from the ends of chilled aisles which tend to be seasonal.
Someone posted details of their local tesco but it's definitely quite different to mine

Supermarkets move things regularly. It's to make you look about and (hopefully) encourage you to buy more things that weren't even on your list. They don't want you going in and just buying the things on your list.

BruceAndNosh · 28/04/2020 12:41

It's also the things that you don't buy very often that are hard to find

BruceAndNosh · 28/04/2020 12:43

I know they like to move things but hopefully they are doing this less in current situation. They also would have to update their own info if they do move stuff round.
It should be very easy for them to put an image like the above on their local store page

I always write my list in order of the layout of the shop. My supermarket hasn't changed it's layout in years.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 28/04/2020 12:44

I've been going to Marks as it's quieter than Tesco but I haven't a clue of their layout

BruceAndNosh · 28/04/2020 12:46

I've always written my list in rough order but I always end up backtracking which is frowned upon with a one way system. You would have to cut back across the ends of aisles

With my local supermarket they don’t really move things around too drastically. So the chicken, beef, lamb and pork have always been in the same aisle. Occasionally they move around the order (so you’d never be able to do it as accurately as “Mince next to ribs next to meatballs next to steaks”); and sometimes you’ll need to look on the end for something they’ve moved there; but a more general layout would work.

TroysMammy · 28/04/2020 12:51

I would like information machines in supermarkets so you can type in eg chick peas and it will tell you what aisle they are on. Ok I know where chick peas would be but a few months ago I was up and down aisles looking for something specific, no member of staff around to ask and it was where I wouldn't have thought it was. I don't normally shop in Tesco so something like that would have been useful.

Mumdiva99 · 28/04/2020 12:51

Do you not write your list this way all the time? My mum taught me to do that. Same as she taught me to put food on the checkout in the order you want to pack it.....tins and bottles first etc

BruceAndNosh · 28/04/2020 12:56

Yes, I do write a rough order but Ambient always scuppers me, especially since they decided that beans (baked and kidney) no longer belong with the tinned veg

That is an amazing idea . Also the sainsburys near me there is only one queue point and if you havnt been to the store for sometime it’s impossible to know this - I was spoken to a bit rudely by a staff member who showed me where to go . I would have appreciated where to go but the rudeness was not needed . I witnessed this happening with a few other customers just whilst I was there.

amicissimma · 28/04/2020 13:02

My local shops don't tend to move stuff around, so I shop in the couple whose layout I know best and make my list in that order.

Last time I was in Tesco they had introduced a one-way system, then blocked off the cross-over from one aisle to the next, so everyone had to backtrack and go the wrong way up a couple of aisles. This in turn introduced more hesitation as everyone got to the barrier, which you couldn't see from the beginning of the aisle, and went '?'

UnconsideredTrifles · 28/04/2020 13:02

You may be able to ask for one - my mum works with patients suffering fatigue and I remember she got one for our local giant Tesco.

My brother once phoned me at work because he couldn't find the vanilla extract....he was in his 20s, living several hundred miles away and shopping in a store I'd never been to. I think he found calling me easier than asking a member of staff!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/04/2020 13:02

I would love an Ikea style system where you could check on the position of everything before you went (especially if you are shopping for work or someone else, so it's not your usual items).

MitziK · 28/04/2020 13:04

They don't want you able to find things, especially not inexpensive ingredients. They want you wandering up and down the aisles (usually) so that you get distracted by the shiny shiny things and the baskets and stacks of shite at the end of the aisles.

poorbuthappy · 28/04/2020 13:06

It would also be handy for when you're shopping for stuff for other people. I've done shopping for both sets of parents and they buy stuff I have no clue about!

BubblyBarbara · 28/04/2020 13:08

This sort of thing would be useful for autistic shoppers at all times as well and would form part of a “social story”

Ponoka7 · 28/04/2020 13:10

I don't normally shop at local shops. So I've only been once to my local Tescos since lock down and not since the one way system. My DD's have been getting me shopping, but their working hours are building and that will soon stop.

I would think that a lot of people are in a similar position. Because of the restrictions on public transport, we are shopping closer to home.

Online layouts would be a good help.

dogwithmohican · 28/04/2020 13:13

This would be brilliant. I am currently shopping for 2 other couples (one vegan) - shopping takes for ever when you are not familiar with the products
