AIBU to think the GP was too dismissive

I posted recently about my 20 year old son’s reluctance to see the doctor regarding a swelling a lump in his testicle. After weeks of pulling my hair out he finally agreed he needed to be seen.

Yesterday he had a telephone consultation where he explained he had groin pain, lower back pain, heaviness in his testicle and a small lump. The doctor’s first response was leave it for another 3 weeks and come back, then he asked my son if he’d searched his symptoms on line and what did he think was wrong, my son told him he had absolutely no idea. The doctor agreed to see him, at the consultation he didn’t address the groin/back pain had a quick feel of the testicle and said there are a couple of lumps and bumps but don’t worry about them.

My son is not reassured at all, would you get a second opinion or would you be happy with what the doctor said. As I don’t have testicles and have never had a testicle examination it’s hard to figure out whether he was being dismissive or not.

The a and e consultant had come to try and find me. He searched for hours. Found me collapsed. Saved my life.

Someone’s been on the gin!

DH had a lump and I sent him to GP. Had ultrasound and referred to urology then to oncology.

Testicle removed and positive diagnosis of stage one cancer. Go back, get it checked properly. Back pain is on our list of follow up symptoms. It is very treatable but it is a young man's cancer. Don't wait

I have also seen the doctor he saw myself, he told me I couldn’t possibly be peri menopausal as I still have periods.

This "doctor" is a fucking idiot. Definitely get a second opinion.

I know it’s not exactly the same, but when I went to the GP with a breast lump a few years ago, she examined me but said she couldn’t feel anything and not to worry. There was absolutely definitely a lump, and I asked her to feel again and she said maybe there was something. She then referred me- it was just a cyst thankfully. But honestly I’d your son is still worried I’d get a second opinion.

nowisreallynottherighttime · 30/04/2020 16:32

My son saw a doctor at the walk in centre today, he found the lump straight away and said it didn’t feel like a cyst or infection so has referred him for a scan which should be done within 2 weeks. He also took bloods and a urine sample. Thankfully things are moving now and I hope the scan comes through quickly to put his mind at ease.

I agree with lockdown stress. If you are worried, ask the GP who examined him what the lumps were and why they are benign.

Part of me is thinking too that your son is 20 and likely is not passing all the information on. As a mother of two 20s DSs, I personally would not need to know specifics about their testicle lumps! And I know they’d not want to go into gory detail with me, their mum. A comment that the GP examined them and said they’re nothing would be all I’d need (and want) to know. They are adults, not children.

Very glad to hear your son when to a different doctor and things are being investigated urgently. 🤞🏼 for a reassuring scan!

Ohohohwhereyougoing · 30/04/2020 17:15

2nd opinion

Dh had a lump and GP didn't think he needed to worry but sent him for a scan within a week anyways. It was nothing, but we were grateful to be sure

CaptainBlunderpants · 30/04/2020 17:27

Thanks for the update OP. Hopefully you’ll hear about the scan soon. Flowers

billy1966 · 30/04/2020 17:30

Even an experienced GP couldn't be 100% sure those bumps and lumps are benign.

That's why a good GP would always send you for an ultrasound to be sure, even if they really felt it probably was fine.

That trainee GP should be reported to the practice manager.

Very poor service provided.

🤞the result will be benign OP.

CoronaMoaner · 30/04/2020 17:46

Thanks for the update OP, I’m glad you are getting action.
I came on to say if this were my son I’d be getting a 2nd opinion.

sarahC40 · 30/04/2020 17:54

He needs an ultrasound and should be referred - we’ve been there and got all the t shirts. Twice.

nowisreallynottherighttime · 01/05/2020 21:11

My son is having an ultrasound scan followed by an appointment with a urologist. He should get the results there and then, I can’t go with him but I can wait in the car park and if it’s not good news they will phone me and I can go in and be with him. Please keep your fingers crossed 🤞

Sorry forgot to add on Tuesday, thankfully everything is happening really quickly.

Fingers crossed for you and your son OP, I completely sympathise with what you are going through 🤞🤞

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 02/05/2020 13:27

That's really good news and hopefully everything will be fine.

CaptainBlunderpants · 02/05/2020 17:18

Oh that’s good. 🤞 OP.

FliesandPies · 02/05/2020 17:24

Hope it's good news for your Son. Drs are human and therefore fallible - always trust your gut instinct and get another opinion if you're not happy.

TORDEVAN · 05/05/2020 20:31

I hope everything went well OP? @nowisreallynottherighttime

CaptainBlunderpants · 05/05/2020 20:38

Oh today was scan day, hope all is well OP.

YakkityYakYakYak · 05/05/2020 21:41

Whilst the chances are the GP is probably right, there is no harm in getting a second opinion. Doctors aren’t gods; they don’t know everything and can make mistakes.

YakkityYakYakYak · 05/05/2020 21:42

Sorry OP, missed your updates. Glad that he got a referral and hope all is well.

Worstyear2020 · 05/05/2020 21:53

Hopefully everything turn out okay, my GPs missed diagnosed my son, it took 3 months for him to get treatment from private clinics, my son left untreated for so long, he has been missing school since January, I lost trust in them.

WonderWebbs · 05/05/2020 21:55

@nowisreallynottherighttime Just seen your thread. I hope your son had good news at his appointment today.

nowisreallynottherighttime · 05/05/2020 22:12

@WonderWebbs He saw the consultant and they have done blood tests to check for tumour markers and they have requested an ultrasound which should be done within the next two weeks. So not really any further on.
