Greggs

Apparently Greggs are going to trial opening 20 stores. I only know this from Twitter, where they were being accused of killing NHS staff by this action.

I'm baffled. How are Greggs any worse to the other food outlets that are still open and never closed? Secondly, how else are we going to move on from the current situation without trialling new ways of businesses operating?

Ah, lost my last sentence. "I think that this seems a pretty sensible move from Greggs".

I don't understand how this is any different to the local chippy. In fact, it's better imo. It is much quicker service as you don't need to wait for food to be made.

Sorry, YANBU

Greggs stores tend to be incredibly tiny and when huge queues form (which they definitely do) social distancing would be pretty much impossible, I just don’t think you could keep people 2m apart in a Greggs queue. Also, how could the staff practise social distancing?

Greggs isn’t essential, neither is the local chippy so neither need to be open. Suppose difference between the two is most chippies don’t have queues out of the door every day like Greggs plus Greggs is a multi million pound business. So yeah, it’s selfish and irresponsible to reopen right now.

The hot food outlets open here are all takeaways doing contact delivery of full meals.
There are one or two cafes delivering cakes/pies. Again contactless deliveries.

Greggs shops are usually small- workers /customers at risk.
They sell snack type food and the footfall is huge. Loads of people in and out.
They are also based mainly in town centres. Opening the shops encourages people to get out and about/ wander round town.

Letsdrinkgin · 28/04/2020 07:32

It’s not and I don’t think they should’ve shut in the first place

whatdoyoudonow · 28/04/2020 07:32

Just to add, a chippy sells full hot meals. Essential (for some) You don't get 109s if people queuing up to buy one pie each.

MiddlesexGirl · 28/04/2020 07:33

They can put those 2m markings out just like they are doing at supermarkets and pharmacies. So yes, I support them reopening. They were never required to close in the first place - they were just a victim of how successful they are, so presumably they have now worked out how to work the social distancing for the stores in question and are ready to reopen.

whatdoyoudonow · 28/04/2020 07:33

...to eat on the street.

fedupwiththisshitnow · 28/04/2020 07:35

I really fancy a Greggs ham and cheese baguette and a triple chocolate muffin .....

BasinHaircut · 28/04/2020 07:37

I support all of these businesses that never had to close in the first place opening back up. Seems like a good, sensible first step at ‘relaxing’ lockdown without actually changing any of the rules. We can see how that goes first and then next steps can be decided on.

DecadentDeity · 28/04/2020 07:37

As long as they can enforce social distancing, I think it’s fine.

BillywilliamV · 28/04/2020 07:37

We have a drive thru Greggs!

Umnoway · 28/04/2020 07:38

They could put the tape markings on the floor but whenever I walk past Greggs it always has a queue of at least ten people and since the shops are so tiny you’d probably only fit three max in the queue.

No one needs a pastie right now.

Clutterbugsmum · 28/04/2020 07:39

Because like most companies they can't keep paying for the cost of running a business with no money coming in.

I think more and more companies will start opening up in the next few weeks or they will close completely and more people will lose their jobs.

It's down to you if you decide to go and use them.

TeddyIsaHe · 28/04/2020 07:40

We have a greggs drive thru so I will have my vegan steak bake with no guilt.

zigzagbetty · 28/04/2020 07:41

No one needs a pasty right now, but we could say the same about all none essential items being sold! I know a ring cake from Greggs would put a smile on my little girls face right now!

Fishcakey · 28/04/2020 07:42

Our Greggs is tiny and always packed and queuing is always very cosy! I think it will be a challenge for them and the queue will be all down the street.

SeaOtterFluff · 28/04/2020 07:42

There are plenty of people still going out to work, other than those on the front line. Delivery drivers, food factory workers, energy suppliers, windscreen repairs... who still appreciate food and a hot drink during their 12 hour shift but they have no canteens. I'm surprised they shut in the first place. If the Greggs reopened on my industrial estate, you'd hear the cheers from a mile away.

HandfulOfFlowers · 28/04/2020 07:43

Good on them. We need to adapt to new ways of operating and I applaud any businesses leading the charge on this. We cannot exist in this limbo, given that the virus is likely to be around for some time. Bravo to anyone who tries to innovate to get us out of this.

Traviis · 28/04/2020 07:44

I wonder if their sample of stores will be a cross-section of sizes and drive-throughs. Or will they open the stores best set up for the “new normal”?

I think it's because the chippie and other take aways are all contact free delivery , with greggs, the shops are usually quite small, with normal sized doors, i think that getting in and out would be the main area it might be hard keeping social distance.

kmc1111 · 28/04/2020 07:51

A great number of people have abandoned all critical thinking and are just having a grand time proclaiming other people murderers now. Best to ignore.
