Greggs

Apparently Greggs are going to trial opening 20 stores. I only know this from Twitter, where they were being accused of killing NHS staff by this action.

I'm baffled. How are Greggs any worse to the other food outlets that are still open and never closed? Secondly, how else are we going to move on from the current situation without trialling new ways of businesses operating?

VanWinkle13 yes we have a drive through Gregg's near us and had a drive through subway but that closed awhile ago!

Suppose difference between the two is most chippies don’t have queues out of the door every day like Greggs

They do round here Grin

Why cant places be open but no sitting in? Dont understand why its only Gregg's.

They can - they're choosing not to.

BirdieFriendReturns · 28/04/2020 17:25

They do coffee. I’ll be going to my local store!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 28/04/2020 17:27

We have a Cooplands in our village, similar to Gregg's. They have remained open but only allow two customers in at once. Don't see why Gregg's can't do the same.

In a way, Greggs is doing a bit of a public service with this trial. We can't go from everything being closed to everything being open. Other chains and small shops will be looking to how their trial goes, so they can learn from it.

Let's face it, no-one's going to be leaving their homes just to go to Greggs. It will be people who are still having to go to work, or travelling through transport hubs who will be using them at the moment. So this move isn't going to increase journeys outside the home.

We need the country to re-open very slowly, so we can keep control. And a small trial like this is helpful in that. Greggs could have stayed open all the time had they chosen to, like most bakeries have. So they're not doing anything radical or risky.

Werkwerkwerkwerkwerkwerk · 28/04/2020 17:50

No one needs to be going to BQ at the moment either .

Loads of non essential shops are open and tbh it's their call whether they decide to do this .

If you dont like it or thinks it poses a risk then simply dont go in there.

Here the drive-thru places never closed. And we’ve kept our death rate lower than most countries in Europe so the odd fast food meal doesn’t kill all the nurses and infect everyone else.

Marijuana stores are open here (considered an essential service) and they are about the size of your average Greggs. They operate a one-in, one-out policy at the door. Greggs can do the same.

Places need to start opening. The economy is suffering. We can’t all stay locked up forever. The virus will never go away just as other virii have not disappeared. It’s about life involving risks and taking sensible precautions to minimize your risk, just as you do when driving, using sharp tools, cooking, climbing ladders, etc. I have to say I found it somewhat ironic when McDonald’s closed in the UK “because the health of our staff and customers is our priority” - so contributing to heart disease, the biggest killer in the UK was OK, but along comes a virus with 0.01% death rate or something and they all close “for health reasons”. You couldn’t make this up.

Queues will likely be around the street as they will have to allow one or two people in at a time if they want to maintain social distancing. Staff will not be able to socially distance from each other and most likely will be wearing gloves and or masks. I imagine they will only be opening high street stores and drive thrus rather than stores in shopping centres as there wouldn't be the footfall at the moment to sustain these.

OK then, I'll just let my leaking toilet continue to pour shitty water over my bathroom floor for the next fex weeks.

Yesterdayforgotten · 28/04/2020 19:53

@chocolatesaltyballs22 ooo I love Cooplands, they do the best cakes!

Ponoka7 · 28/04/2020 20:38

BritWifeinUSA, the problem with McDonald's is the groups of teens that congregate outside. At my three closest MDsit can be groups 20+, all arriving on buses. Just before lock down there was a lot of aggressive behaviour because of social distancing. Some shops bring a lot of anti social problems.

There's a danger of rough areas and i live in one having nothing reopening because the Police have got no chance of keeping control.

PorpentiaScamander · 28/04/2020 20:46

90% of my Iceland shop this week is frozen Greggs produce.

That's both irrelevant and exaggerated Grin
