AIBU to ask the housing association to remove birds from my wall? And if I'm not BU, how can I make them do it?

There are birds in the outside wall of my bedroom. I first became aware a couple of weeks ago when I heard them scratting around in the early morning and saw them flying back and forwards, also that there is bird poo on the inside of my window.

I phoned the housing association and told them but they knocked me back on four fronts: 1) that they don't believe the birds are in the walls, I need to have footage of them going in and out of the wall (I'm on the third floor, they're quick, I've tried standing outside with my phone and pressing record but they're too quick for me, really I stood there for a long time like a crazy person but it's split second movements when they go in and out)
2) that the marks on the window are just marks. They're not just marks. It's actual bird poo dropping down the window on the inside
3) that there's a pandemic on. Yes I know this but this is an infestation and I am concerned if fleas etc are also dropping down the window
4) the birds are probably in the eaves. Well if they were I wouldn't be concerned, but they're not. They're in the space directly above my window. I have seen them with my own eyes going in and out and so have my neighbours. There is a gap in the wall that they're getting in and out of.

What can I do? I've submitted a complaint after they dismissed my request for maintenance but not heard anything. As far as I know landlords do still have a duty to ensure their properties are not infested, even at this time. I pay my rent every month and haven't asked for a repair before. This is driving me crazy.

I have birds that nest in my car port and birds that nest in the wall of my gym (it's wooden at the base and they have gained entrance through a knot in the wood). They are not pests and I'm unconcerned

They’ll be starlings.

My next door neighbour has them under her gables. They come every year, make a nest, have their young and then leave, all within a few short weeks. Seriously, wipe your windows and be thankful for what you have.

Though I’m still wondering how bird poo can be “rolling down the window”. I definitely need a diagram for that.

Summerofloaf · 27/04/2020 23:04

OP it is an offence to disturb them unless you can prove they are a serious health and safety hazard. You can block the vents on the inside to stop the poo coming in.

Also unless they are classed as a ‘pest species’ it’s unlikely anyone is going to be able to remove them.

Earplugs for the noise if it’s disturbing you, the soft silicone ones are manageable.

blue25 · 27/04/2020 23:04

They’re not pests. They’re nesting. There are more important things going on in the world.

Nottherealslimshady · 27/04/2020 23:05

@WhatWouldChristineCagneyDo I'd guess house Martins? Often found in the eves of building. Beautiful birds. www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/house-martin/

NorthernLass75 · 27/04/2020 23:06

OP seems very unwilling to answer perfectly sensible, direct questions Hmm

Purpleartichoke · 27/04/2020 23:06

I can’t believe people are saying she should let birds poop in her bedroom.

I would
Actually let it build up for a day or two and then take photos so it is clear it’s not just dirt.

Ulver · 27/04/2020 23:07

Op you have bigger problems than bird shit.
Do you talk to your kids, neighbours, housing association like that?
You’ve got a chip on your shoulder, no manners and a Shiite attitude.
The birds are the least of your kids worries by the sound of it.

FamilyOfAliens · 27/04/2020 23:07

I can’t believe people are saying she should let birds poop in her bedroom.

It’s this another post I’ve missed where someone says that? I really must read the thread more carefully.

GuyFawkesDay · 27/04/2020 23:08

Nobody is laughing at you. Everyone had tried to offer help.

You are doing a bloody good job of being very aggressive, rude and clearly have a huge chip on your shoulder.

Nobody will come out, it's illegal to disturb the nest.

You are going to have to manage the situation until it can be dealt with.

There's no doubt you have a building issue with the window. But nesting birds and lockdown means you're not going to get anyone out to you for some time.

Samtsirch · 27/04/2020 23:08

@BirdwomanofAlcatraz
I am not middle class.
Regardless of your economic circumstances, your rudeness / anger / aggression toward posters offering advice and information is uncalled for and unacceptable.
May a bird poo on your head every day for the rest of time....
( Only joking 🤣🤣🤣)

WhatWouldChristineCagneyDo · 27/04/2020 23:08

House martens? Well now I'm REALLY jealous.

There used to be dozens and dozens of nests under the eaves at my local parade of shops, the sky was abuzz with them in late spring. Then one year all the nests were removed by the landlord. They never came back. It's been 20 years and I still miss them.

Nottherealslimshady · 27/04/2020 23:09

@FamilyOfAliens ooh! You've helped me identify a large group of our birds. So thank you :) we had a hen harrier (I'm almost 100% certain) eating one of the juveniles the other day.

SerendipitySunshine · 27/04/2020 23:10

Nesting doesn't last until autumn. They'll likely be gone in a week or so, long before a HA repair person can come out, especially with a global pandemic on at the moment.

FamilyOfAliens · 27/04/2020 23:10

So thank you smile we had a hen harrier (I'm almost 100% certain) eating one of the juveniles the other day.

The OP.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 27/04/2020 23:11

No. I've got a fetish about getting middle class wankers to laugh at poor people and now I've had four pages of it so job done.

It's gonna be seagulls going after that chip on your shoulderHmm

Go sleep, calm down, come back with some drawing of how the window is so people can actually help out.

Cherrytangfastic · 27/04/2020 23:12

Also, we have gulls nesting on our roof this year. Be grateful you don't have gulls. They're noisy!

Funny things keep watching us through our bedroom skylights. Bit creepy Grin

FamilyOfAliens · 27/04/2020 23:13

Go sleep, calm down, come back with some drawing of how the window is so people can actually help out.

Please don’t try to persuade the OP to come back. She’s no fun at all, and that’s putting it politely Grin

Ulver · 27/04/2020 23:13

“ everyone on it is either jealous of me for having a "free" HA house (that I pay for) or desperate to categorise me as a greedy planet raping bitch for not wanting to have wild animal faeces in my home. Well, now we know what Mumsnet is.”

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

footprintsintheslow · 27/04/2020 23:13

I'm a housing association tenant so no snobbery from me op and having read the full thread I don't think anyone else is showing any either. You sound like you have a chip on your shoulder about it though?

Chill out about the birds. No one is coming to help you right now. But why not try some of the advice you've been given on this thread. Like getting your anxiety and anger issues dealt with.
Maybe the GP will advise you to go out and embrace nature as it is de-stresses people.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 27/04/2020 23:14

Gull babies are the noisiest

Nottherealslimshady · 27/04/2020 23:14

@WhatWouldChristineCagneyDo we have loads (we own a parade of shops), I love them. They're so beautiful and graceful. Weve also got some Robin's nesting this year for the first time. Not sure where the nest is exactly but they're ballsy buggers Grin
