AIBU refusing to buy second hand?

With this nutty new situation we're in, my husband and I are slightly tight on cash but of course there are things we still need to buy aside from groceries! My husband is a big ebayer but I've always been adverse to buying second hand. The blender we use every day has broken and he's found one for £50 vs the £70 it is brand new but I've put my foot down. AIBU?

£50 isnt that much cheaper

Oysterbabe · 27/04/2020 09:28

Buying for £50 second hand something that costs £70 new is not good value imo. I would not pay more than half price for something that's second hand.

CastleCrasher · 27/04/2020 09:29

It depends, but generally I'm happy with second hand. There's a typing point though - brand new for £70, or unwanted gift used a couple of times for £50, I'll buy second hand. But if it's a battered five year old one that might give up any minute, then I'll buy new.

Suchawitch · 27/04/2020 09:29

I'd want to be saving a bit more than £20. You could probably find a new one on special offer for that price.

CastleCrasher · 27/04/2020 09:30

Tipping point (we need an edit function!)

CalmdownJanet · 27/04/2020 09:30

I'm not going to vote because I think yabu to completely rule out second hand, you can get great things at great prices but I agree with you in this case, I'd rather pay £20 extra and have a guarantee, the price difference in this case isn't big enough so I would buy new too

chunkyrun · 27/04/2020 09:31

I'd shop around abit more. Nothing wrong with second hand but 20 saving isn't much

soozit · 27/04/2020 09:32

Thanks that what my feeling is. He's telling me that it's refurbished and comes with a warrantee though. What do you reckon?

Not sure I understand. If it's brand new, how can it be second-hand?

In any event, purchasing second-hand depends what it is, the price, how old/how much use it has had, et cetera. Lots of factors.

Antiques are second-hand...

Crystal87 · 27/04/2020 09:33

It depends what you're buying. I think you have to careful sometimes buying electronic items and white goods. I've bought tumble dryers and fridge freezers from Gumtree and they've not lasted long. Having said that, sometimes you can get a bargain and get more for your money for a second hand good quality item than a brand new thing that isn't as good.

SunnyStroll · 27/04/2020 09:34

I'm not anti second hand across the board but I wouldn't pay £50 for a second hand electrical appliance if a new one is "only" £70.

Yabadee · 27/04/2020 09:34

What kind of blender u looking for? I was looking for a bullet blender this morning there’s one on wowcher for £15. Or they have a bigger one for £33.

I wouldn’t buy second hand to save £20 unless I really had to

Crystal87 · 27/04/2020 09:36

I did pay £35 for a second hand Dyson and so far I've had it 4 years. Where if I spent £35 brand new or wouldn't get me much.

Odyc · 27/04/2020 09:37

I bought some refurbished electrical things last year. It was the first time I had bought refurbished and I was very pleased with them. They were the exact same as buying new, work perfectly and look brand new. I will definitely buy refurbished again.

mummmy2017 · 27/04/2020 09:39

For £50 old v £70 new, I'd buy the new, as the saving is not big enough to take the chance.

soozit · 27/04/2020 09:42

@FlowerArranger ...sorry I meant replacing it with a brand new version would cost £70, the second hand one on ebay is £50.

What kind of saving would you want if you were buying second hand? What percentage saving would warrant going with someone's old stuff.

I just can't bring myself to do it for a saving of £20!

GreenTulips · 27/04/2020 09:44

I agree
Second hand used is usually half price or less
Second hand ‘new in box’ half price.

Some people are cheeky though

GrimmsFairytales · 27/04/2020 09:47

Refusing to ever purchase anything second hand - YABU

Not wanting to save £20 on a refurbished item - YANBU

I'm all for buying second hand, but £20 isn't much of a saving. I would expect a much bigger margin between new and used. Also does it have to be a £70 blender? Surely there are other options if money is tight.

Reallymissthegym · 27/04/2020 09:48

I think it depends on what it is.

Second hand:- I do buy loads of clothes for me and the dc (especially as they like things like north face and I don’t have £60,£80, £100 for a t-shirt or hoodie), cars, sofas, and wardrobes. But anything electrical I buy new, purely for the warranty. Bought a microwave once from Argos, it was replaced four times. If we had bought second hand it would have cost us a small fortune.

Wynston · 27/04/2020 09:50

Half our home is second hand....I dont mind but yes there are a few things where I just say no im having new.
Especially electronics where I like a guarantee.

Strugglingtodomybest · 27/04/2020 09:52

I think if it's refurbished and comes with a guarantee then it's as good as new and I'd buy it.

mumwon · 27/04/2020 09:53

warranties on new electrics are usually for about a year second hand reconditioned (if they are worth the paper they are written on!) are usually 3 months
£20is not worth it

soozit · 27/04/2020 09:55

@Reallymissthegym

Thanks. Do you know how to get a guarantee for things bought off ebay? I'd be happier to buy second hand knowing I was covered but I rarely see ebay listings with guarantees included

OP posts:
TheGirlWithAPrince · 27/04/2020 09:56

I would want atleast 40 -50% off for the fact it isnt coming with warranty.

saraclara · 27/04/2020 09:58

I wouldn't pay more than half price. The warranty is likely to be short, and not worth the paper it's written on. You'd probably have to post it back if anything went wrong, and there's your £20 gone before they've even touched it.
