AIBU refusing to buy second hand?

With this nutty new situation we're in, my husband and I are slightly tight on cash but of course there are things we still need to buy aside from groceries! My husband is a big ebayer but I've always been adverse to buying second hand. The blender we use every day has broken and he's found one for £50 vs the £70 it is brand new but I've put my foot down. AIBU?

I've had some electrical second hand bargains recently - a KMix for £50 (usually £250) and a fabulous John Lewis tall larder fridge for £60 (retailing around £600).

I need a new washing machine but will buy new this time, have had a couple of dodgy ones second hand and they don't seem to be such a saving.

Alsohuman · 27/04/2020 11:37

If it’s refurbished with a warranty from a retailer, it’s not second hand. It’s a store or online return.

soozit · 27/04/2020 11:55

thanks all - really helpful. The warranty does make all the difference really I suppose. Is it possible to buy a warranty for used/secondhand items from ebay if the seller doesn't offer one?

JRUIN · 27/04/2020 11:58

I'm not adverse to second hand, but there is no way I would pay 50 quid for an electrical item that I could get new for just 20 more. Not much of a bargain is it?

Lostmyshityear9 · 27/04/2020 12:01

is it one of those opened boxes from the likes of Argos? I had a breadmaker from them which clearly when it arrived was brand new but the box had been opened at some point. It had about £40 off the full new price. I have been using it at least once a week for the last 12 years.

Essentially, once an item is opened, they can't sell it so it ends up on their ebay account as 'refurbished'.

Hingeandbracket · 27/04/2020 12:14

I know I am going to get a lot of shot for this but

Adverse

and

Averse

are two different words with different meanings.

2bazookas · 27/04/2020 12:15

Thanks. Do you know how to get a guarantee for things bought off ebay? I'd be happier to buy second hand knowing I was covered but I rarely see ebay listings with guarantees included

Because they've lapsed. According to Citizens advice website

quote
"When you make a claim, you’ll usually need:

proof of purchase - usually a receipt showing where and when you bought the goods
details of what the problem is
a photocopy of the warranty or guarantee

Check the small print

Only the person who bought the item can make a claim, unless your warranty or guarantee uses the phrase ‘third party rights’. It’s important you look out these words if you bought it second hand or were given it as a gift.

end quote

Umnoway · 27/04/2020 12:16

For something like that I’d rather pay the £70 and have a warranty but for other things such as clothing, second hand can save a fortune.

Hingeandbracket · 27/04/2020 12:16

Also OP YABU for starting 2 threads about this.

Pelleas · 27/04/2020 12:18

It will most likely be a store return from somewhere like Argos. Personally for the sake of £20 out of £70 I would rather buy brand new and have a full guarantee. If it was half price I would chance it.

Kelsoooo · 27/04/2020 12:21

Also, I bought, wel DH bought me, a refurbished Lenovo laptop .... Sure you can see a few marks. But it's spot on otherwise

EmpressJewel · 27/04/2020 12:21

OP I'm also adverse to second hand, so I don't blame you (appreciate it isn't logical and I'll probably get flamed).

I don't think £20 is worth the saving. If you looked around, you could probably the one you want brand new for £60-£65 anyway. Or you may be able to find one that meets your need in a different brand for under £50.

ChickenyChick · 27/04/2020 12:22

I would not in your case

Not worth it!

By the way, the one and only superb blender is an Osteriser (mine has been going for 15 years)

crushes even ice, it is in a league of its own

So I'd rather have a second hand Osteriser (you can buy and replace separate components) than a new Argos brand one

It all depends

RandomLondoner · 27/04/2020 12:22

I bought a tablet from Argos that was £110 instead of £140 because it was "refurbished." I couldn't tell it wasn't new. Even the cardboard box was in perfect condition.

I bought a rechargeable hand vacuum from an on-line seller who was an official refurbisher/reseller of returns for the manufacturer. £60 instead of £80 for something that was indistinguishable from new.

Second-hand and refurbished from a reputable source are two different things.

LockedDownNOut · 27/04/2020 12:23

@OP BOTH of you are unreasonable. You can get a BRAND NEW blender for much lower than that. You can even get for as low as £12.99 from Currys, so there’s something very odd about the way both shop.

Thelittleweasel · 27/04/2020 12:25

There are some bargains to be had. Where large stores take back items that have been sold they not put back into stock but are often as good as new and disposed of to dealers. I am not sure what refurbishment they would need. If they are working they are working and perhaps need a 100% clean. If you buy on eBay you are of course covered by the money back guarantee is faulty or damaged on receipt

Hingeandbracket · 27/04/2020 12:27

OP I'm also adverse to second hand

No , like everyone else who mentioned it, you are averse.

Adverse is something entirely different.

NotMeNoNo · 27/04/2020 12:30

I'll buy anything secondhand or refurbished/ex display etc, as long as it can be cleaned. I've had very few problems with things not working. You have to make a judgement on what there is to go wrong with things.

Something being sold for £50 that is £70 RRP should be essentially new in the box. If it was literally used by someone it should be approx. half the new price.

JellyBellies · 27/04/2020 12:32

A refurb with warranty is NOT the same as generic second hand which could just be anyone selling an item.

You need to be able to tell the difference

Louisesp82 · 27/04/2020 12:33

I have bought a few phones refurbished (though not the most up to date models) and found them to be good as new (minus packaging) a friend has also purchased refurbished and recommends it (cant remember what he bought though!)

Thinkingabout1t · 27/04/2020 12:33

Books, clothes (except underwear), accessories, furniture -- I buy all those secondhand or new.
Wouldn't buy shoes secondhand because their shape changes with wear.
Wouldn't buy anything electrical or complicated in any way because I'd rather have something guaranteed by the manufacturer.

heartsonacake · 27/04/2020 12:38

YANBU. I would never buy anything second hand; the thought of it is just grim.

sergeilavrov · 27/04/2020 12:44

Try getting a browser extension like Honey, it saves you so much money. Ask friends if they have referral codes before you download it as I think both of you earn money? It basically just automatically tests discount codes for you, so might be able to get you that new blender for the same price as the refurbished one. I’ve saved probably a few thousand pounds in the past two years, and after you use it so much, they give you gift cards. So I’ve had about $50 worth of amazon gift cards as well. Probably because I shop too much Blush

Noconceptofnormal · 27/04/2020 12:48

Just to warn you that so called guarantees on ebay are not worth anything. I bought a refurbished phone (from a big phone retailer) that was meant to have a 12 month guarantee on it. Phone stopped working after a few months so tried to get it either fixed or replaced by the retailer. Didn't respond to a bombardment of messages, or bad reviews. Contacted both eBay and PayPal who wouldn't help either.

I'll never buy second hand electronics again unless it's literally a fiver.

Uygop · 27/04/2020 12:48

Buying 2nd hand makes so much more sense - much cheaper, and it's a form of recycling. We buy loads of stuff second hand. If find it easier too - other people have already done the searching for and ordering of the item.
