Wtf is all this about having to donate to a service that is national.
The clue is in the name:
NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE

I can see your point.
But what I dont want to happen is all this funding to go into so managers back pocket.
I want it to help front line workers, cleaners, receptionists. I want it to provide them with a safer environment to work in and if theres money left over i want them to have a lump sum. I cant see it going towards that so I am dubious about where it is going.

Huge swathes of the NHS is propped up by charity

At the cancer hospital in Glasgow several of the Clinical Nurse Specialists are actually funded by the Beatson Charity. Those clinics wouldn't function without the nurses

Ginfordinner · 27/04/2020 08:40

Why does this government think that reducing taxes will win them the vote? Everyone I know, including myself, is willing to pay higher taxes to fund our public bodies, especially the emergency services.

boringrobot · 27/04/2020 08:44

Well, some people believe it is free (people who pay no tax etc), so not surprised some think it is a charity too.

BubblesBuddy · 27/04/2020 08:47

The Government already gets IHT. If the NHS got everything from older people, quite a few younger people would go without house deposits. All money keeps the economy turning. Look what happens when we don’t spend money in just a few months.

The NHS has seen funding rise from £110 billion (not million) in 08/09 to over £140 billion this year. See attached. That’s a 33% increase. Have we all had that amount in wage increases? The NHS tries to do too much. It needs to off load some of what it does to not for profit organisations. We demand too much from it and it’s about time we paid for the food we consume as patients. They manage to charge for parking but not food.

Imboredinthehouse · 27/04/2020 08:51

Please say it louder for the people at the back

People are donating to nhs charities WHICH SUPPORT STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS. They aren’t donating money for syringes and drugs.

There is a huge amount of waste in the NHS. Every re-organisation costs a fortune. The current bidding for provision of services wastes a significant amount of time and money. Why farm out a service to a profit making company like Virgin, watch the whole service fall apart, then do the same thing all over again?
Often, the people making the decisions have no clue about what is required/ have no relevant qualifications.
A was chatting to a friend last week. She is a community nurse. The local CCG has been arguing for the last 7 years about provision of an essential service. Endless meetings, no decisions. Meanwhile the NHS nurses providing the service are the most efficient, safe and cheapest providers. It is completely unnecessary to waste all this time and money, not to mention all the extra people to attend meetings.

QuestionMarkNow · 27/04/2020 08:52

@Monty27, I get you.

I was read8ng an article about two young children in Vietnam that have spent all their pocket money to send 20.000 mask to the U.K.
Gushing how amazing it is.

I am ashamed. Deeply ashamed that two children giving their money away like is seen as something good. It’s not!!!
This pandemic is an exceptional circumstance. The government found billions spare to do brexit. I’m sure it could have found a million more to buy some PPE if it had wanted. How low has the Uk gone if it needs foreign charitable aid from children to be able to cope Confused

BubblesBuddy · 27/04/2020 08:53

There should be room for debate in an open society. It’s reasonable to do this and it shouldn’t be deleted. We just disagree but valid opinions should be expressed or are we moving to “no platform” MN? Hopefully not.

lyralalala · 27/04/2020 08:53

Mumsnet premium users please hit report to get it deleted

Wow

Regardless of the thread topic that didn't take long for the first "Better/More important users please..." comment to come out

So much for MN not wanting to do a fundraiser because it would create a two tier system whereas this apparently wouldn't

TheStuffedPenguin · 27/04/2020 08:54

These are extraordinary times @Monty27 and everyone isn't a selfish arse like you expecting the NHS to work today like it did in 1947.

noavailablename · 27/04/2020 08:55

"Mumsnet premium users please hit report to get it deleted"

Seriously?

BubblesBuddy · 27/04/2020 08:55

The NHS spends millions on treating citizens from abroad. Including people from Vietnam. They just don’t have enough equipment right now due to world shortages.

In fact NHS England staff clocked up 5 million air miles this year! So we have a very international perspective in NHS management.

lyralalala · 27/04/2020 08:58

Well premium users will be more listened to, it's like easyJet+ members. We can all fly but some are more valued

Unless Justine outright lied when asked about it they won't be

Plus without the non-premium members, who will be much larger in number, the site is fucked.

TheStuffedPenguin · 27/04/2020 08:59

@Handiies you REALLY think this Grin

BubblesBuddy · 27/04/2020 08:59

If you fly with Easy Jet you obviously don’t have any taste though! So do I want your opinions anyway!

DaisyDreaming · 27/04/2020 09:00

A relative was on a dementia ward recently (only due to their age), the nhs provided amazing care but I assume it was charity funds which meant they had an iPad playing music, a fake train station and a fake bus stop for all the patients who are agitated as they need to go home. It was lovely to see them calmly sitting there or being able to walk around safely. A good use of charitable funds. I’ve been on a ward which mostly had long term admissions and charity funds had provided a washing machine and tumble drier for patient use, what a difference that must make when hundred of miles from your family and being able to wear and wash your own clothes

QuestionMarkNow · 27/04/2020 09:00

Yet underfunding and cuts mean both public services end up relying on donations.

The reality is that we are not far from going back to Victorian times when people had to rely mainly on charity for any social and health care.
If (or when?) the NHS will rely mainly in charitable donations to keep going, this is where we will end up.

Btw the fact that some areas is only supported by charitable donations is an issue in itself. Because this means that some areas, the most deprived of course, will get much less donations for lets the local can er centre or the local hospice leaving the poorest with crap care again....
Back to post code lottery etc... for something that is supposed to be a NATIONAL healthcare service

BubblesBuddy · 27/04/2020 09:01

This demonstrates why Premium membership is such a stupid idea. Divisive and people thinking they are better than others on a site like this.

QuestionMarkNow · 27/04/2020 09:02

@BubblesBuddy but somehow two children have magically found 20.000 masks, despite the worldwide shortages, and send them to the U.K....
If children can find some masks, why can’t the government do it?
