To think a broken hip means hospital?

onestepat · 26/04/2020 15:35

Ok so my gran is 98 nearly 99.
Friday she fell and she couldn't stand /couldn't walk.
Obviously I phoned a Ambulance who took her to hospital.
My aunt said I was putting her in the firing line for covid.
She couldn't stand or walk and was in pain..what could I do ?
Anyway x ray showed a broken hip
They operated yesterday and today she is recovering.
I called and she was in the chair eating her lunch.
Please someone tell me I did the correct thing?
What other option did I have?
I'm terrified she will catch covid but I couldn't leave her at home in that condition.
My aunt is being ridiculous

Of course you did the Right only a complete loon would say otherwise. Hope she’s going to be ok.

HappySonHappyMum · 26/04/2020 15:38

Your Aunt is being ridiculous!

Toilenstripes · 26/04/2020 15:38

You definitely did the right thing. At that age a broken hip can be a life or death situation. I hope she makes a full recovery soon. 💐

doublecheeseburgermediumfries · 26/04/2020 15:38

I think you did the right think. The government is drilling into us that the NHS is there if we need it, we shouldn't be avoiding using it.

The fact she needed to be operated should be proof enough you did the right thing.

I hoe she recovers quickly and return home soon x

onestepat · 26/04/2020 15:39

I really hope she will be ok.
They said it went well and have had her moving around a little today.
They've said they going to start on her rehab.
It's great how they get them up and moving so fast

You definitely did the right thing. A broken hip would be extremely painful and she would be at risk of further injury if it was left.

Your aunt is being ridiculous. The ambulance service wouldn't have taken her in if they didn't think it necessary, equally, the hospital wouldn't have kept her if they didn't think it necessary.

I'm pleased to hear your gran is recovering well. Hopefully, she will be home soon.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/04/2020 15:39

Your aunt needs a reality check.

A broken hip can be fatal.

onestepat · 26/04/2020 15:40

They did say another way they could have treated it was bedrest for 3-4 months but they said that could cause lung problems plus pressure sores.
They said for some quality of life that was the best option.

Of course you were right.

I hope she mends soon, she's obviously a tough cookie if she's up AND eating hospital food!

Flowers for your gran.

LIZS · 26/04/2020 15:41

Of course you did. Broken hips and immobility are key triggers for other infections from uti to pneumonia, and consequential death. They will not keep her in longer than necessary.

CaptainBlunderpants · 26/04/2020 15:41

Of course you are right, and she wouldn’t be on a covid Ward unless she had symptoms.

Tootletum · 26/04/2020 15:42

Your aunt sounds a little nuts. Yes of course she has some risk of catching covid but the risk of death fr an untreated broken hop is probably higher.

onestepat · 26/04/2020 15:43

My aunt is very old school and would have preferred my gran at home in bed till it healed.
I didn't think it was realistic

QuestionableMouse · 26/04/2020 15:44

She could have died without proper care. You did the right thing.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/04/2020 15:44

Absolutely hospital. It is often fatal, you did the right thing.

PotteringAlong · 26/04/2020 15:45

You cannot just lie in bed until a broken hip heals. Your aunt is being a loon, you definitely did the right thing .

MamaGee09 · 26/04/2020 15:46

you Did the right thing, broken hip would have been agony and wouldn’t heal properly by itself! She needed urgent medical attention.

Selfsettling3 · 26/04/2020 15:46

Yes. It needed operating or she would have been in immense pain. It would not have healed if she she just stayed in bed.

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/04/2020 15:47

"lung problems" after a hip fracture is pneumonia, and is a big reason why elderly people don't recover from hip fractures. So by staying at home she might minimise the risk of dying from Covid induced pneumonia but she'd be likely to get pneumonia from immobility.

Glitterbubbles · 26/04/2020 15:47

Doctor here (not orthopaedic). You 100% did the right thing. Even in extremely frail people operating on a broken hip is generally better than not, for pain control if nothing else. (Never mind all the issues that come with immobility)

user1493413286 · 26/04/2020 15:48

Of course you did the right thing; there was no alternative

waggydog21 · 26/04/2020 15:48

My partner’s grandad, the same age, left a broken hip for three days. He now can’t walk properly, had two surgeries and will basically never make a proper recovery. You absolutely did the right thing, even if bed rest would heal it there’s no way of knowing that without consulting a doctor. Anything could have happened, you 100% needed to get her to hospital.

WiddlinDiddlin · 26/04/2020 15:49

Even if treatment at home is an option you still need that checked out and xrayed which still means hospital!

alexdgr8 · 26/04/2020 15:49

well it's done now, so don't keep agonising, she has been treated, is responding well and hopefully will be home soon.
your aunt is probably worried about the whole covid situation.
try to empathise with her anxiety rather than getting into a dispute.
recognise that you are both concerned about the old lady's welfare.
good luck.

MatildaTheCat · 26/04/2020 15:49

Keep it in mind for a few years until your aunt falls and breaks a bone. You can suggest she doesn’t waste the time of the nhs and avoid possible infections by self treating at home.

Nuts.
