First world problem I know, but this conundrum is driving me slightly batty. Is it "a Hawaiian" pizza or "an Hawaiian pizza"??

I understand that if a noun or adjective starts with the letter h , if the h is silent eg heirloom, you would say an heirloom. However, if it's a hard h sound then you would say eg a hairline fracture.

However a Hawaiian pizza is harder to say than an Hawaiian pizza....so which is correct please??

A Hawaiian surely?

LeNil · 26/04/2020 15:22

Should be an before H, but it’s not a commonly followed rule.

panicstationsready · 26/04/2020 15:22

I'd just go for a Margherita....

Branster · 26/04/2020 15:23

I though in writing is ‘an’ before all words starting with vowels and the letter H.
Si speaking it would be the same?

Branster · 26/04/2020 15:24

So not si

CareBear50 · 26/04/2020 15:25

@panicstationsready 😂😂😂

It was for the purposes of a joke

I cooked an Hawaiian pizza the other night. I'm a silly cow cos i burnt it to a crisp. I should have used ALOHA temperature 😂😂😂

The casual use of ‘nazi’ in your thread title is unnecessary and really offensive. I’ve reported it and asked for the thread to be removed

Stelmariah · 26/04/2020 15:26

I am always having the same problem. I often see for instance an historic building”. I pronounce the h in historic, so why put an before it instead of just a^ ?

CareBear50 · 26/04/2020 15:26

@Branster no.....it depends if the h sounds like a vowel or a consonant

OP posts:
NearlyGranny · 26/04/2020 15:26

An before an h word is a bit archaic, and unnecessary if you aspirate the h. You could solve the problem by eschewing the abomination that is pizza with pineapple on it. 😁

66redballons · 26/04/2020 15:29

Your title is incredibly insensitive... no make that offensive.

Stelmariah · 26/04/2020 15:29

Hodgeheg3 I genuinely hope you are either joking or drunk. Which one is it? Or member of Stasi?

TheSandman · 26/04/2020 15:30

No idea but I just love the fact that 'Hawaiian' has four consecutive vowels in it.

Mawbags · 26/04/2020 15:30

Really? Grammar nazis? Hmm

Horrible phrase.

Far more offensive than any mispronounced pizza.

I always knew coming on here would be worth it one day.

I would say "a Hawaiian pizza", but I would say "an historic day". But I would say "a history book". I would say "an horrendous accident". So I seem to vary depending on the word. No help whatsoever!

TheSandman · 26/04/2020 15:32

I kind of agree, but the OP does get a mark for using a capital 'N'.

TheEponymousGrub · 26/04/2020 15:32

"‘an’ before all words starting with vowels and the letter H"

TheEponymousGrub · 26/04/2020 15:33

Really? So, "an hat"?

totallyyesno · 26/04/2020 15:33

Should be an before H, but it’s not a commonly followed rule.
That's because it's not the rule! You use "an" before a vowel or vowel sound (heir, hour etc). So a Hawaiian pizza is fine.

TheSandman · 26/04/2020 15:34

"‘an’ before all words starting with vowels and the letter H"

"An Hot Pizza"?

BossAssBitch · 26/04/2020 15:34

A Hawaiian. The H is hard.

@LeNil
Should be an before H, but it’s not a commonly followed rule

Not quite right. This rule only applies when the h is silent. So for example this rule would be applied with the word 'honest', because the h isn't pronounced. However, we wouldn't say 'an hotel'.

brentwoodbaby · 26/04/2020 15:37

If the H sounds like a vowel (hour, heir as examples) you should use 'an'. If it sounds like a "huh" ( as in Hawaiian, hotel, hat) you'd use 'a'.

I'm a pedant but definitely not a Nazi.

Fallsballs · 26/04/2020 15:38

Ok just ask for a pineapple and ham pizza.

CareBear50 · 26/04/2020 15:39

@bossassbitch

Re your point about a hotel. You might hear some older people saying an hotel. This is because it's a carry over from French where the h iin hotel is silent. I love grammar facts or interesting background stories lol

I hope they tell you to get a life. No one has the right to go thru life without being offended, and just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
