Do you think Cornwall will be 'open' in July?

Hi all.

A purely speculative post to gauge opinions, as I know we don't know, don't have a crystal ball, etc etc.

We have booked a self catering holiday cottage near Bude for the first 10 days of July. We live in the South East, so it's about 5 hours drive to get there on a good day. We have a dog so would need to stop at a service station at least once.

As part of general future-focused conversation, DH and I are ruminating about

1: will we be 'allowed' to go
2: if we are, would we want to anyway?
3: if it's 'allowed', will the Bude community welcome us or hate us?
4: will the tourist industry want revenue or not?

Etc. Etc. Etc.

Anyone else having similar discussions, and if so, what are you thinking?

@PinkSparklyPussyCat - it’s ridiculous. Why should we suck up losing hundreds of pounds!! The residents will just have to suck it up if lockdown is lifted and companies will not give refunds!

thegcatsmother · 26/04/2020 17:17

SunShine Iv paid hundreds to stay for a long weekend in July and I will be going Come then, but don't mank if there is nothing open; the beaches are closed or very restricted, and cafes and small shops aren't open.

happy They hate tourists at the best of times so this gives even more of a reason for hostility. Bit of a sweeping statement surely? Do you know everyone in Devon and Cornwall and how they feel about tourists?

Lillyloolar · 26/04/2020 17:17

Hopefully. We have norfolk booked for the first week in August. I so hope we can go. We will happily just go to the beaches and eat in the cottage. Not bothered if restaurants etc are not open.

I hope you get to go. Cornwall sounds beautiful. We haven't been yet as it is 8 hours drive. We go to Dorset most years though

coolcatsandkitten · 26/04/2020 17:19

I live in Cornwall and I can imagine that tourists will not be welcome this year.

many many people online are angry at the thought of tourism this Summer. And I can understand why - our hospital is tiny.

However we do need the tourism to prop up businesses and jobs - so I can see both sides.

We even have a temporary mortuary at Newquay Airport prepared just in case we need it.

I guess we’ll wait and see. Smile

coolcatsandkitten · 26/04/2020 17:20

Btw we have a holiday booked for the Lakes and have decided not to go.

We’ll just have to holiday at home Smile

SunShine682 · 26/04/2020 17:21

@thegcatsmother - why would I moan about that? It would be all Over the news so I’d be perfectly aware and happy to come down and enjoy a change of scenery, get takeaways from cafes etc

Complexico · 26/04/2020 17:23

No, not now people are being advised to shield until July it won't.

LakieLady · 26/04/2020 17:25

I live in London. Do the Cornish lose sleep over the thousands of people from other countries who have been allowed to arrive daily in our city and go where they like? We have more hospitals, that’s true. To serve MILLIONS

London gets additional funding for hospitals because so many of them are national centres of excellence. It also has economies of scale, because of the size and number of hospitals, and saves on things like ambulances, because they don't have to travel 40-odd miles to the nearest A&E, maternity, etc.

The argument against dedicated funding for areas with a lot of tourists is that they contribute so much to the local economy in terms of jobs etc that they effectively pay for themselves.

I'm not entirely convinced, tbh.

justasking111 · 26/04/2020 17:25

Smashing a car window is just the usual neanderthal mentality.

When tourists come back here the locals will have to be extra vigilant, gloves, masks, limit trips to town I expect. The economy will take precedence I expect.

coolcatsandkitten · 26/04/2020 17:26

Even locals with roof boxes on the car are getting angry attention (this happened to us and we had to prove we were local 😂😂)

polobelt · 26/04/2020 17:26

Doubt it myself

ivfgottostaypositive · 26/04/2020 17:29

If the lockdown is lifted or even eased next month there is no reason not to go. To be honest the Cornish need to remover who props up their entire economy.....tourists! If the government says we can travel then that's what we will be doing

thegcatsmother · 26/04/2020 17:29

You would moan SunShine because that is what you have been doing on this thread. If you bring the virus with you and infect someone, we cannot cope down here if it spreads. I don't know what is so hard to understand about that.

www.visitcornwall.com/coronavirus-covid-19 have a read.

ANoiseAnnoys · 26/04/2020 17:30

I live in Cornwall and I can imagine that tourists will not be welcome this year

See it’s comments like this that really get up my nose though. Lots of veiled threats on here “well you can come but you won’t be welcome!”

We have a week in Cornwall booked for august and if the government says it’s ok to go, and we can’t get our money back, we will be going.

And why is everyone bandying about the month of September, and even next year as the time when people will be welcome again? Why do you think things will be any different then? A vaccine is doubtful or even if it happens, it’s a long way away.
I feel so sorry for people in the tourist industry/self employed shops etc in these tourist destinations. They must feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. They need to get back to normal but If they partake in “outsiders” coming down will probably face the wrath of their neighbours (people whom I suspect are not being hit financially by this).

Life must go on at some point - when are people going to understand that it’s not going away?

coolcatsandkitten · 26/04/2020 17:30

@ANoiseAnnoys I don’t give a crap if you come or not. 😂

Jaxhog · 26/04/2020 17:32

Nope. I don't see major travel restrictions being raised for non-essential journeys until the middle of next year. Is a year at home really so bad?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/04/2020 17:33

I agree @ANoiseAnnoys. I'm hoping the travel ban stays in place and I can get my money back. If it doesn't then we'll go but I can't say I'm really looking forward to it.

Lillyloolar · 26/04/2020 17:33

I don't think pleasing the locals should come into it. If places are closed you can't go anywhere but if the beaches etc are open then what right has anyone got to be pissed off.

Their were fisherman on sky news the other saying they are struggling. They had the long winter and now the tourist season is not happening.

If you choose to live in a touristy place then you have to share it's beauty with others.

To be fair more facts are needed on this virus. More testing etc. We still have no idea How many it has affected so mildly or with no symptoms.

We all want to protect the ones who need to be protected. But do we really want to destroy the economy for our children and for many years to come?

Just see what happens and I wouldn't waste your energy worrying if the locals will dagger you. It's the government's decision ultimately and if cases are dropping (I hope so by then) then you may well have a well deserved holiday.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/04/2020 17:35

@Jaxhog I have no problem staying at home, I do have a problem with not being able to get a refund when my holiday is cancelled though!

transformandriseup · 26/04/2020 17:35

See it’s comments like this that really get up my nose though. Lots of veiled threats on here “well you can come but you won’t be welcome!”

But is there anywhere in the UK that will tourists be actually welcome right now?

AcrossthePond55 · 26/04/2020 17:37

I'm in California (not Cornwall) but still in a lockdown situation in a 'tourist popular' state. TBH, I wouldn't book any holiday anywhere in 2020 that didn't have an extremely liberal cancellation policy. The only 'tentative' plans we've made involve places that have 48 hour no-charge refund policies.

This year (IMO) is going to be totally unpredictable.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/04/2020 17:37

@transformandriseup I think part of the problem is Cornwall and parts of Wales have history for not welcoming tourists. We've never had a problem in Cornwall (never been to Wales) but when you read about locals being abused it makes me think I'd rather not go back, even when this is over.

thegcatsmother · 26/04/2020 17:37

To be honest the Cornish need to remover who props up their entire economy. Gosh, and I thought it was HM Forces paying dh's salary for all those years....silly me.

I think you'll find that HM Forces props up some of the economy, as does the university, and the very smelly factory locally that claims to make pasties (but they aren't proper oggies). Tourism plays a part yes, but there are other strings to Cornwall's bow. It's a place where people live, who have qualifications, PhDs etc. We aren't just here for your entertainment, or to tug our forelocks and prostrate ourselves as you drive past ivf. With an attitude like yours, can you wonder if some are less than enthusiastic when you visit?

Pasghetti · 26/04/2020 17:41

I'm not in Cornwall but in another popular tourist area. We are praying tourists will stay away even though it will affect our own income. Infection rates are low here and shops are well stocked simply because most tourists have been staying away. If tourist season goes ahead we will basically have to hole up in our houses for the summer.

We already have arseholes visiting their second homes in spite of the lockdown. They are not getting a word or a smile from people living here and tbh this is the friendliest place on earth most of the time.

category12 · 26/04/2020 17:42

What are you on about, choosing to live in a touristy place? If you're born and grew up in a place that tourists come, are you saying you should have move away from family, friends, your place of birth if you're not dead keen on the inconvenience of tourists?! Redonculous.
