Help others expand their vocabulary Grin

I like ‘anthropomorphise’ and ‘Schadenfreude’
But so rarely get to use them in a sentence. So it feels good to do that here!

Hit me with your most eloquent sentences Smile

Vexed, I don't know why I love that word so much!

titsbumfannythelot · 27/04/2020 08:38

I came on to say petrichor but @TheRoyallingStones beat me to it. Love the word and the scent

Cheeseismymiddlename · 27/04/2020 08:39

I love hearing my teens say vexed. I do wish they would wring their hands when the do so. 😂

Saracen · 27/04/2020 08:43

"I trust" goes beautifully in a snotty business letter. It communicates that you'd bloody well better fit in with my expectations. In fact, no confirmation is needed because I am so sure you will comply with my demands.

Examples
"I trust I will not be hearing from you again regarding this matter"
"I trust that my account will be credited with the money"
"I trust this meets with your approval"
"I trust this letter was sent to me in error"

Sadly, few people in my life deserve this level of condescension.

Halliracket and stramash

AnneOfCleavage · 27/04/2020 08:48

Snap and Cheese my teen DD says vex/ vexed a lot and says it's one of her favourite words 😀

Lots of my favourites have already been mentioned but I haven't seen one mentioned yet that I use whenever I can and that is innocuous. Also forthwith when writing contracts 😂

BlindAssassin1 · 27/04/2020 08:51

Palimpstet.

Doesn't come up much outside the world of ancient manuscripts or literary devices, no matter how hard I try and cram it in to general conversation.

RickOShay · 27/04/2020 08:54

Evocative
Dystopian

RickOShay · 27/04/2020 08:56

Actually dystopian has been getting more use recently

RickOShay · 27/04/2020 08:57

I’ve found that minty only really goes with toothpaste. I need another pet.

I found 'tatterdemalion' in an Enid Blyton book and fell a little in love. I always imagine a small scruffy lion.

raspberryrippleicecream · 27/04/2020 09:11

Deliquesce.

Was a family joke as teens. Annoys DH no end if I manage to use it as 'no normal person would know what it meant'.

Also love obstreperous and outwith.

tothesea · 27/04/2020 09:13

Perspicacious.....amazing word
Endymion...no chance of using in a sentence
Obtuse....satisfying chunky word use it regularly in this house

donquixotedelamancha · 27/04/2020 09:24

Sinister is surely a word you can use all the time? Lots of people are left handed.

My favourite two, so far unmentioned, are:

Cromulent (because of it's origin)

Turdiform (because of how unexpected it's actual meaning is compared to what springs to mind)

BlackeyedSusan · 27/04/2020 09:33

Crepuscular
Obstreperous
Cockolorum.

WarmSausageTea · 27/04/2020 09:42

SavageBeauty73 · 27/04/2020 10:11

Discombobulated. I've been using it loads in Lockdown.

dayswithaY · 27/04/2020 10:15

Hyperbole
Cretinous
Parochial - love this, reminds me of a pretty village full of mystery and intrigue.
Mystery is also wonderful as is the word curious - as to me they suggest adventure and excitement.

JinxandBinx · 27/04/2020 10:21

Exsanguinate - not a pleasant meaning, but I adore how it sounds.
Also, fucko’d, invented by my little sisters best friend as another word for drunk, definitely makes me and my bestie smile when we use it

SerenDippitty · 27/04/2020 10:25
