To think non essential business shouldn’t be open at all

My title is a bit vague, but I’ll explain below.

In my town, and I’m sure a lot of places are doing this now, most restaurants and coffee shops are open for deliveries which is fine as long as social distancing is maintained when they deliver to the customer but they all seem to be allowing customers to come down to the store and collect their food if they want to instead of delivery.

AIBU to think this is contradicting the lockdown rules? How is this essential travel going down to the chippy to collect your dinner? You have to stand outside in a line and I can imagine social distancing isn’t being adhered to whilst this is happening.

Some might say I’m wrong because eating is essential but surely I’m not wrong to think such establishments should remain completely closed or at least only make it delivery only?

Maybe they can't afford to hire someone to do deliveries, and if the owners or chefs themselves do it, they've not got time to make the food.

Having people collect costs them no money.

I have no problem with restaurants offering take away or delivery, my dad is 73 and a creature of habit, who HAS to have his fish and chips on a Friday, my daughter managed to find him a really lovely one who deliver it to him with no extra fee, he looks forward to them coming now.
However I do have an issue with the local ice cream van that is still coming round twice a day, his hygiene wasn’t the best before, I dread to think what germs he is spreading!

gingersausage · 26/04/2020 16:36

You’re assuming it’s selling ice cream.... 🤣

LilacTree1 · 26/04/2020 16:46

ginger he probably does sell ice cream but also sells ice cream.

I always remember a former boss who said "i don't understand when you hear ice cream van music in the middle of the night" Grin

YANBU. Totally goes against social distancing.

The problem is that even if they sign up with hub such as deliveroo or whatever, they lose a massive chunk of their income hence many places offer their items at increased prices via other websites.
I remember I used to book a hairdresser appointment via somewhere until they told me the website took 40% of the fee. I presume having somewhere who organises deliveries for you gives you the advertising and a platform, but also eats into the income, so click and collect pays off far more.

MarginalGain · 26/04/2020 17:02

Deliveroo, what a racket. I would cut them out wherever possible.

It sounds as though the takeaway places mentioned on on this thread are adhering to Government guidelines. I agree that if they are open (and following guidelines) then they should be supported where possible.

I can’t see how the likes of deliveroo going from business to business, house to house. Is better than collecting yourself
