To think non essential business shouldn’t be open at all

My title is a bit vague, but I’ll explain below.

In my town, and I’m sure a lot of places are doing this now, most restaurants and coffee shops are open for deliveries which is fine as long as social distancing is maintained when they deliver to the customer but they all seem to be allowing customers to come down to the store and collect their food if they want to instead of delivery.

AIBU to think this is contradicting the lockdown rules? How is this essential travel going down to the chippy to collect your dinner? You have to stand outside in a line and I can imagine social distancing isn’t being adhered to whilst this is happening.

Some might say I’m wrong because eating is essential but surely I’m not wrong to think such establishments should remain completely closed or at least only make it delivery only?

You didn't say you encouraged businesses to stay open - you said they should be closed unless they were delivering.

fourpeasinapod · 26/04/2020 13:28

@wowfudge I did say I encourage them to open. Please re read the whole thread and you’ll see

id rather the spread was reduced rather than increased

And the rest of us don’t?! But that doesn’t mean throwing common sense out of the window. You even admitted earlier on how you “imagined” how people were queuing without even knowing the facts or witnessing it.

I’m sorry but you should check your facts first before you start lecturing us all about we are killing people for the sake of a pizza

LilacTree1 · 26/04/2020 13:29

OP which businesses would you allow to open, if delivery only?

cherrybunx0 · 26/04/2020 13:32

@fourpeasinapod well so would we all but I would also rather people didnt loose their livelihoods and minds, more than anything I would rather people mind their own business and let people assess risk for themselves without people starting these on here. let them go pick up some chips, nothing to do with you

Butterfly44 · 26/04/2020 13:32

We have a few take aways open for click and collect. You're assigned a time to come and collect. It doesn't work if you wait in a queue to collect cold food. In any case everything around me that open has social distancing being adhered to

thesesocksaretootight · 26/04/2020 13:32

Our local chip shop is open.

You ring up and place your order, they take card payment over the phone. They give you a collection time, which they space apart. You go to chip shop, stand in the doorway and tell them who you are. They place your order on the counter and stand right back. You go in shop and collect order. Job done.

fourpeasinapod · 26/04/2020 13:32

@LilacTree1 If it was entirely feasible for all business to deliver, then I’d see no problem with all food business opening for that reason.

Obviously that isn’t feasible.

I was only ever concerned about people waiting outside restaurants for their collections and then possibly getting too close to others. That is all. I’m not saying I want the economy to collapse

IPityThePontipines · 26/04/2020 13:33

OP, was it you who had a thread complaining about people walking past holding nice drinks from a café yesterday?

Regardless, YABU. Some people on here seem to be very put out that we aren't having an army on the streets type of lockdown. I'm not sure why.

BlueGheko · 26/04/2020 13:33

YANBU OP. Whilst it may be perfectly possible to collect food whilst socially distancing I very much doubt the staff cooking the food will be afforded the same luxury. Kitchens in take ways are never large enough to allow for this plus many of those staff will have to use public transport. I'm not willing to put people in minimum wage jobs at risk to save on cooking.

Winterwoollies · 26/04/2020 13:33

You’re unreasonable because you’re assuming people aren’t socially distancing while waiting for their well-deserved treat of a fish supper, but you don’t know that because you haven’t been... 🙄

wowfudge · 26/04/2020 13:33

If that's what you think you have posted OP, I suggest you re-read your posts because it really isn't what you have stated. From your thread title to places offering delivery only to only a couple of people queuing.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 26/04/2020 13:36

I drove past a couple of chippies, a bakery and a butcher's on my way home from Tesco on Friday aft and people were queueing up outside each of them. They were social distancing in each queue, so much so that the queues were down the streets and around the corner.

fourpeasinapod · 26/04/2020 13:37

@IPityThePontipines no it wasn’t me who made that thread.

I’m not saying I want all businesses to close and the economy to go to shit,

I’m just saying I was concerned about social distancing in small spaces outside shops etc. That is all. I know that delivering food isn’t always feasible and I didn’t take that into consideration

Could murder a bag of chips right now.Grin

Frompcat · 26/04/2020 13:37

Wind your neck in.

fourpeasinapod · 26/04/2020 13:38

@Frompcat is there really any need to be so vile to me? I’m having a civilised discussion here

We normally get delivery but the couple DH has collected - very locally - has been very strict with the social distancing. Much more so than when one or of has needed to use the nearby supermarkets thats for sure.

fourpeasinapod · 26/04/2020 13:38

@PuppyMonkey so could I actually! Smile

People have had enough of lockdown and will be using this as a way to get out . TBH think it a clever way of government get a manageble trickle of CV infections.
I would stay in for 3 months and not even not going out into the garden if it meant we would be rid of CV but it wouldn't change anything the virus is as much a threat after lockdown as it was before. We need a steady trickle of infections .

Everyone staying in for months is not a cure

tigger1001 · 26/04/2020 13:39

Don't see the difference from queuing to get into any other shop. If you can queue while maintaining social distance at the supermarket, surely you can queue while maintaining social distance for any other shop?

Frompcat · 26/04/2020 13:40

you must have led a very sheltered life if you think "wind your neck in" is vile Confused

fourpeasinapod · 26/04/2020 13:41

@Frompcat it’s a bit rude, that’s all. I’m expressing my opinion whilst welcoming others opinions. So no need to tell me to wind my neck in Hmm

OP posts:
CatBatCat · 26/04/2020 13:42

Every takeaway I've passed so far are taking orders at the door and not letting anyone in. Everyone is queuing at a safe distance outside the door. Seems sensible to me.

JellyfishandShells · 26/04/2020 13:43

The fish and chip shop at the end of my road is run by a family who all live together around the corner so no problem with social distancing In the kitchen. A lot of these non chain/non franchise takeaways are individual businesses , run by families.
