Secondary Teachers, what do you think about going back to school for the last term with social distancing?

My year 8 and year 10 dc are in the best possible situation at this point. Both have their own computer, space to work, pretty good home learning from school and both are cooperating. However, I am so worried about the impact being off school until September will have on them socially, on their mental well-being let alone the academic side of things. When I think about dc who are less fortunate than mine I feel so anxious and concerned. I’d be so happy to see some sort of phased return to school as soon as possible really. Looking at the stats I’m not concerned about the health any of the dc or staff at the school although obviously wouldn’t expect anyone in the vulnerable categories or dc of the vulnerable to be expected to return (there’s only one teacher at at their school who is shielding because he’s diabetic). I think school should reopen and the vulnerable remain isolated so the virus cannot be passed on to them if dc fo pick it up at school.

There is a shortage of teachers. If teachers lose their jobs because they can't go in to teach as their own dcs schools aren't back yet, then that is another school not able to offer spaces to more children of other workers and so on...

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:24

Mistress

I said many times schools should return regardless ideally with social distancing were possible

But if not possible they should return anyway with minimising risks- like EVERY other area

collateralmadamage · 27/04/2020 00:25

Sunshine are you drunk?

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:25

Teachers are no more special than the rest of us

You manage your kids

Like I have to

Like my non teacher friends have to!

Childcare affects us all and shouldn’t be in the equation at this point

You are on a public forum which I have been following all day you are not coming across well.

FrippEnos · 27/04/2020 00:29

@collateralmadamage

There is a high probability that you are correct.

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:32

Really?

I’m a teacher, happy to adjust my role where possible to keep it going

Yet we have some, not all, teachers on here trying to come up with every excuse going to not return to work

For gods sake there’s people risking their lives for minimum wage every day

Kids have minimal viral load and rarely have symptoms

It’s the symptoms which cause transmission

I’m embarrassed for some of you

😂

Honestly I’m off to bed but seriously

If you’re worried just ring in sick if it bothers you that much

The rest of us will carry on for you

You were right Sunshine1239. They know it really.

Mistressiggi · 27/04/2020 00:36

How old are your children sunshine?
Because that makes a sizeable difference to managing without (all) schools open.
Actually our dc would still be entitled to a place at whatever schools are open as key workers.
Enjoy your race to the bottom sunny

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/04/2020 00:36

It’s the symptoms which cause transmission

Collateral might be right.

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:38

Thanks, I know imhotep3😊

It’s about being reasonable and supportive in society

We all should do our bit 👍

Childcare is not unique to teachers so isn’t part of the discussion

maddy68 · 27/04/2020 00:38

Years of underfunding have led to huge classroom sizes, inadequate toilet /handwashing facilities, minimum cleaning staff.

Not easy to return to school safely

FrippEnos · 27/04/2020 00:39

Which is it?
There are some holes opening up in your story.

imhotep3 · 27/04/2020 00:39

Oh you'd be key workers then? Just not now?

noblegiraffe · 27/04/2020 00:41
Daffodil
Mistressiggi · 27/04/2020 00:42

I am already classed as a key worker. Working from home doesn't stop you being a key worker. I am on a rota to go into school to work and my dc are entitled to a place in school with the other key worker children. I even have a letter to prove it to the police.
But I am conversing with either drinks or idiots or trolls, so that's enough.

imhotep3 · 27/04/2020 00:43

You see @mistressiggi my point about what is key, what is essential? At some future point your job is suddenly key so that you have childcare the rest of us don't? But it's not key at the mo?

Mistressiggi · 27/04/2020 00:45

? It is now? I work every day and I was in work last week? Don't know what your point is

imhotep3 · 27/04/2020 00:45

Again with that daffodil - it's an adjustment to think of them as an insult, I really like them, they're so jolly!

icecreamcrackers · 27/04/2020 00:45

Probably a deeply unpopular view but I think all year groups should restart the current year again in September to ensure no one is left behind.

Mistressiggi · 27/04/2020 00:46

Daffodil are not insults.
