Secondary Teachers, what do you think about going back to school for the last term with social distancing?

My year 8 and year 10 dc are in the best possible situation at this point. Both have their own computer, space to work, pretty good home learning from school and both are cooperating. However, I am so worried about the impact being off school until September will have on them socially, on their mental well-being let alone the academic side of things. When I think about dc who are less fortunate than mine I feel so anxious and concerned. I’d be so happy to see some sort of phased return to school as soon as possible really. Looking at the stats I’m not concerned about the health any of the dc or staff at the school although obviously wouldn’t expect anyone in the vulnerable categories or dc of the vulnerable to be expected to return (there’s only one teacher at at their school who is shielding because he’s diabetic). I think school should reopen and the vulnerable remain isolated so the virus cannot be passed on to them if dc fo pick it up at school.

I can think of no reason at all why I'd send my children to the corner shop for me right now, does it make me a better parent if I do that? Hmm

Sunshine1239 · 26/04/2020 23:51

mistress

All I was saying is that schools should open in same capacity as every other workplace. With reduced staff and social distancing - less students

It’s not the notion of walking shops - it’s the psychological aspect of thinking that’s dangerous

imhotep3 · 26/04/2020 23:52

No I wouldn't either but for real reasons, like abduction and shit, y'know

Sunshine1239 · 26/04/2020 23:52

I mean more student than currently tho

My local secondary has about 49 kids in

That’s obviously too low long term once workers return

More capacity is possible I’m sure

noblegiraffe · 26/04/2020 23:53

please don’t pass that panic on to your children

I’m not keeping him out of the corner shop because I’m panicking about him getting it. There’s no panic involved, thanks.

imhotep3 · 26/04/2020 23:56

I might send him if I needed rizla or some cans mind

Mistressiggi · 27/04/2020 00:01

With reduced staff and social distancing - less students
Oh I see now. So what is your plan for social distancing in schools? I mean, how many students per class could we have while maintaining social distancing?

BirdieDance · 27/04/2020 00:05

I'd love to know what people imagine teachers which children of their own are supposed to do when/if schools return with part time students in. We're there full time but our children aren't? How is that supposed to work?

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:07

You may not be able to do social distancing

Like many other employees

It’s an ideal - Not a necesssity

government guidlines say where possible only

So if you have half classes so say 10 per class as example

Not perfect but no employee can do perfect social distancing

Teachers seem to be expecting special treatment on here

I’m teacher and I’m being realistic

FrippEnos · 27/04/2020 00:07

With reduced staff and social distancing - less students

Fewer students, won't help in the playground, corridors, canteen or toilets.

And with social distancing (we might actually agree on this). My school might be able to have 1 year group in per day.

Although what lessons they would get is anyone's guess

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/04/2020 00:08

The risks to healthy people under 40 are ridiculously low

People really should stop chucking this line out at strangers over the internet. Unless you know the person on the other end is healthy it’s probably wise to keep that thought to yourself.

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:09

Same as every other employee who has to go to work full time

You’re no different

Your post just proved your motive. Stop expecting special treatment. Childcare is separate issue

Every working parent has same issue

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:10

What happens in playground is now your issue

Perhaps those breaks won’t happen

You all seem to be putting obstacles in way rather than looking at solutions

Mistressiggi · 27/04/2020 00:13

Sunshine it isn't possible to debate with you. I ask what you're actually wanting and you say for schools to reopen with social distancing. I ask what you think that would look like, and you say we need to open without social distancing. Make your mind up.
Special treatment? I certainly think the children of this country deserve a bit of that. The ones I taught were really worried and keen for the schools to close sooner than they did. And until we can say with some degree of certainty that they won't get badly sick and won't spread the disease at home then they need this special treatment.

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:15

No I said schools should reopen with social distancing were possible

You want something which isn’t possible

Im guessing you just want to be off

Guess what, we all have to return and adjust our role

Thank god it won’t be your decision

FrippEnos · 27/04/2020 00:16

Sunshine1239

I am pointing out the issues with your solutions.

you like many others don't seem to like it.

What happens in playground is now your issue

It needs to be recognised that children/teenagers will play together and that it is not the fault of the school if they get ill. As it is what will happen when schools go back.

As for breaks not happening, how long are you expecting these kids to be in school for, children need breaks.

imhotep3 · 27/04/2020 00:17

mic drop

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:18

You all seem to be worrying about breaks and maintaining social distancing

These are guidelines were possiblue

They’re not rules! Schools can just do their best!

FrippEnos · 27/04/2020 00:19

Sunshine1239

Im guessing you just want to be off

Why post something so goady?

Does it bring anything to the discussion other than showing yourself up?

It has been stated many times by those discussing this with you that they/we want to go back.

Sunshine1239 · 27/04/2020 00:19

Same with shops, factories and other industries

We try our best to social distance

Bloody hell youre not front like treating direct cases stop dramatising your role

I’m a teacher and you get one with it

You’re no more special than anyone else and are paid more than half the essential workers keeping the country going currently

Mistressiggi · 27/04/2020 00:20

Honestly sunshine I'm sure you are more clever than you are coming across on this thread. You want schools to reopen ASAP with no social distancing and anyone who isn't hunky dorey with this mad scheme just wants a wee holiday at home. Thank fuck the government thinks more like me and less like you, you utter muppet.

StrawberryBlondeStar · 27/04/2020 00:21

@BirdieDance there’s another thread on this issue (although about business). The reality is if you can’t do your job because of lack of childcare you will lose your job.

Mistressiggi · 27/04/2020 00:21

Have you been to work in a school since lock down Sunshine? Because I have, and it was not a good experience at all.

FrippEnos · 27/04/2020 00:22

Going to agree with Mistressiggi on this.

You are just up for a ruckus.
