To remind people of the exercise rules

Keep seeing all this stuff where people are making up their own rules and telling people off! we were even glared at while having a family picnic on a long walk yesterday! Please stop with telling people off when they are within the guidelines.

Here is the current situation, as updated about a week ago.

What are the current rules when it comes to exercise in the UK?

Daily exercise, including walking, running, cycling, tending to an allotment or doing yoga is allowed.

You are allowed to drive somewhere to take your exercise. The guidance says, ‘it is lawful to drive for exercise.’ However, ‘Driving for a prolonged period with only brief exercise’ is also deemed ‘not likely to be reasonable’. The rule of thumb? You’re allowed to drive somewhere to go for a walk or run as long as you spend much more time walking than you do driving.

Exercising more than once per day is likely to be allowed if you have a ‘reasonable excuse’ for needing to leave your home.

You are allowed to sit and take a break from exercise, say, on a bench or sitting down in a park. However, this must be for a short time only and, as before, you must spend markedly more time exercising than resting.

You could have x number of people in our park all walking on the paths and it would be impossible to keep to 2m all the time because there are pinch points if half of x were sitting on the grass at any one time social distancing would be much easier. We need to remember what the rules are for. The important thing is is social distancing happening. A family sat 20m away from me is less risk to me than the 20 joggers that overtake me at 2m.

WilburIsSomePig · 26/04/2020 08:18

No where in the real world would an hour be described as a long walk.

There are many dickish remarks on this thread but apart from completely missing the actual point of the thread, this just shows that some people really have no idea that the 'real world' also includes people who may be very elderly, have disabilities, injuries or many other reasons that would mean an hour was a long walk for them.

I'm lucky that I am not one of those people, but I have friends and relatives who are. The shortsighted-ness of some folk is staggering.

lovepickledlimes · 26/04/2020 08:22

@WilburIsSomePig what kind of condition would mean some needs to have a 20 minute meal after a 1 hour walk?

CherryPavlova · 26/04/2020 08:33

Actually driving out to tiny villages, walking a few paces into a sheep field, having a picnic and letting the children run around the village does place the very elderly, very vulnerable local residents at risk.

Those living there have remained safe but incomers thinking it’s the new go to destination risk bringing the virus with them and leaving it on metal kissing gates, church gates, phone boxes, a bin or the well.

They might not see anyone but our older folk stay well by keeping active and walking daily. Even those shielding are usually able to get out safely and walk for half an hour or so. They can’t do that if the area fills with egocentric cyclists and drivers ho fancy somewhere different.
Driving to rural areas, particularly villages, is incredibly thoughtless.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/04/2020 08:40

The guidelines have been garbage and NOT based on the law at all.

And the MN version, aka ‘The Rules’, is even worse. I swear some posters would be happier in North Korea

Xenia · 26/04/2020 08:41

Hopefully it will all be over soon and in the mean time those of us subjected to the endless hoards can just tolerate them. I pick up their dog poo, their drug remnants and their litter. My son filled a complete black sack the other day. We never drop litter anywhere ever. Litter louts should stay at home and dirty their own flats instead.

Even yesterday our supermarket has put racks of plants for sale down the side of the queue - fine you might think but yesterday a lady came very close to everyone in the queue as she looked at plant after plant - I moved 6 feet away from her to the side but she didn't get the point. Weirdly she then didn't buy anything and drove home after 10 minutes - it was as if she had decided to to go the queue to infect people.

MarieG10 · 26/04/2020 09:59

@PinkSparklyPussyCat ...yep. Agree. I find it utterly incredulous has MN posters appear to have a set of rules which break at peril...ironically similar to Chinese whispers?

B0bbin · 26/04/2020 10:12

I guess it depends where you are- common sense has to prevail. I had a sit down with my toddler on a long walk to eat. I wouldn't describe it as a picnic, but we sat and ate sandwiches. We didn't see another person for the whole 2 hours of walking, so i don't think it did any harm. We're lucky to live in the hills. Sounds like some people are stopping on benches in parks, which might be a bit riskier, as lots of people are doing the same. I still think you make uour own choices based on your own judgement and nobody should be telling others off for a picnic.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 26/04/2020 10:21

A bloody picnic then the cheek to come on here preaching

Exactly !!!!! GrinGrinGrin

gingersausage · 26/04/2020 11:14

@WilburIsSomePig where in the “guidelines” does it say that the people you mention have to walk for an hour. No one is being forced to go for a hour’s walk ffs 🙄.

TheHarryFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 26/04/2020 11:22

@WilburIsSomePig what kind of condition would mean some needs to have a 20 minute meal after a 1 hour walk?

Glycogen storage disease
Metabolic disorders
Congenital
Type 1 Diabetes

Don’t necessarily mean that every person will need a rest and food after an hour’s walk every time but all those conditions mean that some people will need that on some occasions.

TheHarryFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 26/04/2020 11:22

OP, those guidelines aren’t for the UK but for England.

TroysMammy · 26/04/2020 11:25

You can eat a sandwich and drink pop whilst walking. There is absolutely no need to get the tartan blanket out!

RainMustFall · 26/04/2020 11:54

Why do you think we need reminding? Do you think no-one else is capable of understanding or remembering the rules? Why are so many people obsessed with the actions of others when it doesn't impact on their lives?

Aridane · 26/04/2020 11:56

Why do you think we need reminding? Do you think no-one else is capable of understanding or remembering the rules?

Exactly

Lemonblast · 26/04/2020 11:57

No sign of the OP ? Grin

lovepickledlimes · 26/04/2020 12:14

@TheHarryFormerlyKnownAsPrince Yes have food but it does not take 20 minutes to eat

JacobReesMogadishu · 26/04/2020 12:21

Well I could drive 2 hours to the Lake District and then hike for 7 hours and drive home.

But I don’t because I’m not a twat. But I could argue that it’s within the guidelines/rules.

One family having a picnic isn’t really an issue. But the glarers were probably wishing they could also have a picnic but are sensitive enough to realise that if 20 families have a picnic then it’s not alright. So they don’t. Wonder if the Op would have been ok if another family had put a picnic rug down 2meters away from them. She’ll probably say that’s fine but in reality I suspect she wouldn’t have liked it.

JacobReesMogadishu · 26/04/2020 12:22

Sensible not sensitive.

Aridane · 26/04/2020 14:15

No sign of the OP ? grin

Too busy having a family picnic after a 10 minute walk

MarieQueenofScots · 26/04/2020 15:11

No sign of the OP

An A/S is very illuminating as to the OP’s type

ambereeree · 26/04/2020 15:49

Why oh why can't people just use common sense?

Orangeblossom78 · 26/04/2020 17:05

Ho sorry we were having another picnic! It;s been lovely, families out, some playing badminton, bringing their own net, we had a frisbee and played with that, mum with a baby feeding it nearby, all well spaced out.

Lots of people out on bikes as well, an annoying man on one of those electric scooter things nearly whizzing by though. But yes all well apart we are sop lucky to have such a beautiful hime park only 5mins from the flat.
