Oh I’m an idiot.

Cooked two frozen chicken kievs in the oven. Thoroughly cooked. Hot. Cooked them probably 10-15 mins longer than packet suggested (23 mins). Ate one... had a moment of horror...

Yep. Defrost before use.

Am I going to round off 10 days of covid with food poisoning? Tried to make myself sick but only succeeded in pulling a muscle under my tongue Envy (not envy)

This wouldn't worry me

LtGreggs · 24/04/2020 19:43

If they were properly hot through, you're fine.

What difference do you think defrosting would have made?

The first 10 mins in the oven basically did a rapid defrost.

Nottherealslimshady · 24/04/2020 19:43

I always thought the chicken is precooked in things like that?
You'll probably be fine either way, dont stress.

SquatBetty · 24/04/2020 19:43

As long as they were hot all the way through I wouldn't even worry. I often chuck frozen stuff in the oven for a bit longer just to defrost it

Elouera · 24/04/2020 19:43

Did the packet say they needed to be defrosted first? Many crumbed things like fish are supposed to be cooked from frozen! Was the butter inside frozen? Was the chicken pink, cold and raw? If not, I don't see the issue.

LaurieMarlow · 24/04/2020 19:44

Were they thoroughly hot in the middle?

If so, I wouldn’t worry.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 24/04/2020 19:44

Sorry I'm not clear... They were hot in the middle and cooked through? What's the problem?

AlwaysCheddar · 24/04/2020 19:44

It’s fine!!!

Nottherealslimshady · 24/04/2020 19:44

Wait, it was hot all the way through and cooked? Then it's fine. It would probably just have been nicer if you'd defrosted first

jomaIone · 24/04/2020 19:45

It's usually only defrost before use as it'll take longer and the quality might not be as good if it's over cooked but sounds like it will be absolutely fine. Wouldn't even give this a second thought.

simonisnotme · 24/04/2020 19:46

nah youll be fine, we microwave ours from frozen to thaw then chuck em in the oven, we aint been ill ever

DramaAlpaca · 24/04/2020 19:46

I'm not seeing the problem. You gave them extra time in the oven and they were piping hot inside. All will be well, I promise.

TheSheepofWallSt · 24/04/2020 19:46

Chicken was cooked. I burnt my tongue. All the butter had melted and run out in the way that Kiev butter does.

It’s just been drilled into me that YOU DEFROST CHICKEN THOROUGHLY OR DIE.

Am I wrong?! Blush embarrassing...

OP posts:
Thisismytimetoshine · 24/04/2020 19:46

That would only be an issue if you'd followed the recommended cooking time. You didn't; you cooked them till they were done.

PatriciaHolm · 24/04/2020 19:49

If it was cooked, it's fine. I do this all the time.

PaquitaVariation · 24/04/2020 19:51

Plenty of chicken products are cooked from frozen. It’ll be fine.

Weregoingonanadventure · 24/04/2020 19:52

You can cook a whole chicken from frozen. You can cook a kiev from frozen.
It usually needs 50% longer cooking time, but if it was hot and cooked through then you're fine.

You dont need to defrost chicken, or any joint, before cooking.

Oldestchild90s · 24/04/2020 19:52

This reminds me of a phone call we received at my work the other week 'Hi my son cooked a chicken kiev in the microwave for 10 mins instead of in the oven for 45 mins will he get food poisoning?' 😂

If it was hot enough to burn your tongue you should be ok 🤞🏻

Slith · 24/04/2020 19:53

Am I wrong?!
Yes, you are.

bloodywhitecat · 24/04/2020 19:54

Scroll down on this BBC Good Food recipe to the box where it says 'Recipe Tips', it tells you "For best results, cook from frozen."

userabcname · 24/04/2020 19:55

Huh? We regularly eat the waitrose chicken kievs cooked from frozen....so far, the household has survived. I'm sure you'll be fine.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 24/04/2020 19:57

If it's a whole chicken then yes you need to defrost before cooking it otherwise because it's so big that otherwise the outside will be burnt before the middle is cooked.

For smaller things it's fine, it just affects quality (so cooks less evenly) rather than safety, if you allow extra time in the oven and its thoroughly hot

TheSheepofWallSt · 24/04/2020 19:57

It sounds like I’m really thick doesn’t it?
I’m normally very pragmatic- I think being unwell has unbalanced me a bit....

Don't worry about it, I've done it loads of times. I've noticed some frozen products, say breaded fish, that once had instructions to cook from frozen now say defrost but I cook them from frozen as per the previous instructions with no problems. I've also eaten a yoghurt four months past its use by date and been fine, but that's another story.
