Oh I’m an idiot.

Cooked two frozen chicken kievs in the oven. Thoroughly cooked. Hot. Cooked them probably 10-15 mins longer than packet suggested (23 mins). Ate one... had a moment of horror...

Yep. Defrost before use.

Am I going to round off 10 days of covid with food poisoning? Tried to make myself sick but only succeeded in pulling a muscle under my tongue Envy (not envy)

PositiveVibez · 24/04/2020 20:00

Am I wrong?! Blush embarrassing...

Yep. You'll be fine. Do not worry.

Weregoingonanadventure · 24/04/2020 20:05

@OoohTheStatsDontLie

No you dont!!! Go and google it. You can cook a whole chicken from frozen, you just add on 50% cooking time. That's how I cook chicken a lot. It doesnt go dry. It isnt burnt on the outside or raw in the middle.

At least do a basic google before you post a comment like that.

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 24/04/2020 20:09

I cook stuff like that from frozen all the time, it just takes a bit longer. As long as it is 100% cooked there is no problem

sonjadog · 24/04/2020 20:09

I cook chicken kiev from frozen regularly. Never had any problem. As long as it is cooked through you will be fine.

TomTomRunner · 24/04/2020 20:12

I've cooked plenty of Chicken Kiev from frozen, if they are cooked through then nothing to worry about.

Ninkanink · 24/04/2020 20:13

The only reason it says to defrost is to ensure the chicken reaches the correct temperature when cooking it, which is what makes it safe to eat.

If it was hot all the way through to the extent that your tongue was burnt then you’ve nothing to worry about.

Lavenderpurple · 24/04/2020 20:15

You’ll be fine. I always forget to defrost stuff, I just bung it in oven a bit longer and I’m still here to tell the tale.

KitKat1985 · 24/04/2020 20:15

As long as it was hot and cooked all the way through, you will be fine. x

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/04/2020 20:15

I thought this was going to be a mumsnet chicken post, where you realised you’d run out of chicken on meal 20 for your family of 8.

MissHoskins · 24/04/2020 20:19

Oh no Mummy it's at least a family of 10

MissHoskins · 24/04/2020 20:20

And it's meal 180

TheSheepofWallSt · 24/04/2020 20:21

I feel like I’ve just discovered how to Adult. I’m 32 and a mother and I never knew you could cook chicken from frozen without immediately dropping dead with a galloping case of ... something unpleasant

OP posts:
BooseysMom · 24/04/2020 20:21

Ha! I thought it was going to be the kind of CHICKEN HELL that involves neighbours keeping chickens in their gardens and causing rats and noise!! I kind of fancy keeping chickens but am too chicken due to neighbours complaining!

Anyway op you'll do yourself more harm trying to make yourself throw up!! The fact you cooked it longer would be exactly what you'd do anyway so yeah no worries!

virginpinkmartini · 24/04/2020 20:21

They say cooking from frozen should take approx 50 percent longer than if defrosted, which you did.

I reckon its a quality thing, you would get better results with this product if it was defrosted first. Nothing to do with food safety. As long as its piping hot (75 degrees) you are absolutely fine. You could probably argue that bacteria was more likely to accumulate in the defrosting process, if anything. Please don't worry

virginpinkmartini · 24/04/2020 20:22

If I were you, OP, I would invest in a meat thermometer. Gives you fab peace of mind when cooking high risk stuff.

Tana433 · 24/04/2020 20:30

We buy cook from frozen chicken joints all the time. Also cook chicken burgers from frozen (think you are supposed to ) As pp have said, as long as it was thoroughly cooked through you will be fine

bloodywhitecat · 24/04/2020 20:33

I'm pretty sure that we used to be told NOT to cook chicken from frozen but that is no longer the case so you might not be quite as mad as you think OP.

LaurieMarlow · 24/04/2020 20:33

I never knew you could cook chicken from frozen without immediately dropping dead with a galloping case of ... something unpleasant

The food safety people did their job too well. To a damaging degree. It’s the waste that’s the issue.

bloodywhitecat · 24/04/2020 20:47

I opened this post thinking "I know all about chicken hell, the little bastards darlings have killed my garden.." only to find it was nothing like that. I used to have a garden. With grass. Now I have chickens

I always thought things like kievs were supposed to be supposed to cooked from frozen for best results. Anyway, as long as it's not raw and piping hot it's fine.

LaurieMarlow · 24/04/2020 21:00

I haven’t had had a chicken Kiev for ages. Really fancy one now, I must have a look out when shopping tomorrow.

Thanks OP.

lljkk · 24/04/2020 21:11

I did not know any of this.
I actually don't know what a chicken kiev is... a chicken that has talked to Satan?
I'm going to forget this thread, actually, & keep doing what seems ok.
Smells & tastes fine = is safe to eat is how I decide.

Maryann1975 · 24/04/2020 21:11

Dh despairs with me. If I’m really organised I sometimes get frozen food out earlier in the day so it’s ready to cook for tea (freezer in garage), I don’t care if i says best cooked from frozen, we’ve always been fine. And sometimes when I’m disorganised and forget to get anything out for tea, I will put something in the oven while it’s frozen even if it says to defrost overnight in the fridge. Again, we’ve never had I’ll effects from this. I’m sure you will be fine.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 24/04/2020 21:12

Ummm, I'm going to be the dissenting voice here. ExDP once cooked chicken breasts from frozen and gave us both the worst food poisoning I've ever had. Yes, both ends, for about ten days afterwards. I lost about half a stone.

OP, I think you'll probably be ok as the kiev was most likely pre-cooked, but for everyone else - DEFROST YOUR MEAT BEFORE YOU COOK IT. The chicken I had was hot, cooked through, definitely not pink, and yet within twelve hours I was shitting my arse out whilst puking bile into a bin.

Haffdonga · 24/04/2020 21:13

I tried to make myself sick.

You did the fuck WHAT? Shock
