As a nurse, To avoid the clapping

nursingbynight · 24/04/2020 15:34

I find it terribly embarrassing.

I'm so proud of the NHS and the work my colleagues and I are doing.

I just find everyone on the street looking at me whilst clapping so cringe!

My SIL says I'm ungrateful and unspirited. Am I?

Oh no YANBU. I mean, I’m all for the clapping but I wouldn’t be able to cope with actual clapping AT me!

tootiredtoconga · 24/04/2020 15:40

YANBU. I would find it extremely awkward. Due to the nature of my job I know lots of people who work in the NHS and several of them have expressed similar feelings to yours.

Lozziiee8993 · 24/04/2020 15:42

I have to agree. I'm sorry but I don't go to work for claps or appreciation. I go to do a good job and hope that I can help improve people's lives. Plus like anyone else no matter what job it is. We've all got bills to pay.

missyB1 · 24/04/2020 15:42

Ha ha my dh (Doctor) arrived home from work on his bike just as the clapping was starting yesterday, he was mortified as the neighbours started waving at him and turning towards him as they clapped. He was like a rabbit in the headlights Grin he just wanted to run inside but felt like it would be rude.

EL8888 · 24/04/2020 15:43

We are both nurses and feel the same. What does your SIL do? Why is she attacking you about it?

PurpleDaisies · 24/04/2020 15:43

YANBU at all.

WorraLiberty · 24/04/2020 15:44

You should direct your SIL to the millions of threads on MN about this.

It's a personal choice and I don't think anyone should be judging those who choose to do it/not do it.

Yabadee · 24/04/2020 15:44

My NDN is a nurse and he hides indoors too with the blinds shut 😂 shyest guy I’ve ever met, think he’d combust if people physically clapped at him

LolaDarkdestroyer · 24/04/2020 16:03

I cringe for you tbh....nhs staff I know feel the same plus plenty post on social media saying they'd rather people to stick to the rules than clap. It's turned into banging pans, drums and fucking fireworks last night it's getting daft and a bit of a novelty rather than a show of support.

PotholeParadise · 24/04/2020 16:03

Good grief, YANBU. I'd hate being clapped at!

?

Lordfrontpaw · 24/04/2020 16:04

I wondered about the poor people working on shifts getting woken up with the noise!

chunkyrun · 24/04/2020 16:05

I find it cringy. Like when people sing happy birthday and you just don't know what to do with yourself but a million times worse

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 24/04/2020 16:08

Thos of us that hate it are made to keep quiet

PotholeParadise · 24/04/2020 16:12

Lordfrontpaw, in their infinite wisdom, the great British public has decided NHS staff only work 9-5 and that nurses and medics and all the many many people who keep hospitals operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week don't do shift work. Hmm

I used to work shifts at a business that is definitely a key one. If I was still doing it, I'd want to kill any neighbours who blared car horns and rattled spoons in saucepans at 8pm!

Bienentrinkwasser · 24/04/2020 16:12

I’m a midwife and I hide every Thursday. A couple of neighbours have actually said ‘thank you’ to me as I’ve passed them in the village. It’s hideous!

WhyCantIthinkOfAgoodOne · 24/04/2020 16:13

I just wouldn't come out if I were you - as a nurse no one can possibly accuse you of not supporting the NHS!

ClockworkNightingale · 24/04/2020 16:18

Yes, I usually get home around 8 and I literally run inside to avoid it. Cleverly escaped the whole thing yesterday by working a nightshift, though I did hear fireworks going off during my drug round. Confused

Bertucci · 24/04/2020 16:19

Just stay indoors.

We don’t participate. I’ve not noticed anyone in our village doing it tbh.

Riviera2001 · 24/04/2020 16:27

I think the clapping is nice but once is enough.
I think nhs staff would prefer to be paid better rather than a pat on the back.
They earn well but it doesn't come to that with the amount they are taxed.
I have a family member who works for the nhs
Is actually a consultant for intensive care unit. Earns well but takes home less. It's a shame.

MintyMabel · 24/04/2020 16:27

Clapping at you? Really? Surely they are just out clapping. If you don’t like it, stay in.

Riviera2001 · 24/04/2020 16:29

But to be honest I think the clapping is nice it's just a way for the public to say thank you.
Because we can't help any other way

CCaK · 24/04/2020 16:29

I hate it too. I don't clap.

But I have donated to the NHS and the Shield PPE fundraiser.

Bounceyflouncey · 24/04/2020 16:31

YANBU, the first week was lovely, and actually quite emotional. Now it is a ritual I think it's pretty pointless and most people have forgotten what they are actually clapping or banging pans for.

Savingshoes · 24/04/2020 16:32

It's extremely condescending tbh.
No bonus, no overtime rates, leave refused, lots of health professionals being told their place of work is now closed and they have to be moved to a corona ward, oh and the icing on the cake is Matt H has said "we'll see" about a pay rise in the future.

PotholeParadise · 24/04/2020 16:37

Clapping at you? Really? Surely they are just out clapping. If you don’t like it, stay in.

I think the OP can tell if she is being clapped at in particular.
