Friend trying to recruit me into her MLM scheme

posting for traffic

I have recently been made furloughed by the company I work in as the job role I work in is struggling to pick up work for employees. DH is working but has taken a 30% pay cut so finances aren't strong at the moment. I have a friend who has devoted her life to home working in the last year but quit her job in January to work as an MLM 'team member' whatever that is.

I am fairly active on social media, and so is she, on several local Facebook groups. I run one group where it is rather a safe space for members to post - excluding MLM schemes and any other schemes that exploit people. My friend is a part of the group and usually is a compliant poster. However recently she has been messaging me, asking me if I'd like to join her MLM team. She is a recruiter so makes money from recruiting other people and when they pay in, she gets a percentage. I have refused, and she has kept on insisting. Today I logged onto Facebook and saw that she has now tried to recruit my group members and I immediately deleted the post and got rid of her.

She sent a grovelling message saying it was 'totally unfair and rude as MLM offer good working incentives in this current situation'. I retorted back and told her that she is exploiting a lot of furloughed people and unemployed people to pay an absurd money so she gets money!! After that she stopped replying. However, another friend of mine sent me screenshots of my 'friend' ranting on multiple groups about me, and calling for people to troll me and send me death threats.

She's even sent me a bloody invoice of the monthly payments you have to pay in for the MLMs. I have now blocked her and anyone who is associated with her so she can't use them to get into my head. I am livid. Please share any stories you have of MLM recruitment, so I can feel better.

Surely she was BU about this as she is trying to force me to sign up?

For the PP asking about all of the 'travel consultants' who have popped up a d been fully trained in two weeks they are 100 MLM, mostly with inteletravel. I work in the travel industry, agents are on their knees at the moment working crazy hours with no income and paying back the commission they earned on cancelled bookings. These MLM idiots are still recruiting saying it's an easy way to make extra money and theres about to be a travel boom Hmm
The vast majority of tour operators and consolidators dont deal with them, they have a tiny amount of suppliers they deal with and tell outright lies about how they work and what they can book. They are appalling and so many people have been sucked in as they think a travel agents job is easy! I'd love to see some of these recruiters dealing with the events of the last few weeks, trying to get passengers home while Visa rules and airspace closed around them. Jokers the lot of them.

You’re right! Even if bots did earn enough to claim tax relief I doubt they’d be successful claiming uniform relief for pyjamas and crazy eyelashes. Grin

I wasn't talking about MLM at all, I was only talking about the cost of job, that is all. But you do know me so well to talk on behalf of me in regards of MLM. Very judgemental I say. You are entitled of your opinion, so am I, but you not entitled to talk on behalf of me for sure. And my comment was in general, not about your cost of having a job, which even if it very minimal you still do, but of all people who have a job. I did have to pay for my own suits at one company, paid for my own traveling at every single company I worked and some other expenses.

And to make sure we don't have a thread of more messages, I will describe how I see the job, business owners or MLM people- I have seen nurse in her sixties who was looking after my mum at the hospital. That lady was sweet, humble, caring and somehow very happy, she was spreading beautiful energy around her. She was doing something that made her happy, that was her passion. I did admire her as she was an inspiration for me that we all can find something what we love doing with passion, then we will be more happy and less stressed and angry. This way we would never have a writing of this kind. That lady had a JOB that made her happy. So no matter what you do, do something what you passionate about- job, business, MLM...how about you? Are you happy at what you do? By the tone of your message doesn't look like.....have a wonderful day!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 25/04/2020 12:30

@Trintukas

You shouldn’t be happy in a job that exploits others. That’s not ok. That nurse that you describe helps others and at no point requires others to sign up as nurses in order to be paid.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 25/04/2020 12:32

I’ve just looked back over the last few weeks and realised just how many MLMs I’ve been invited to join. It’s ridiculous. I decline them all no matter who sent the invite.

YouokHun · 25/04/2020 12:43

I’m very happy in my job. Like the nurse you describe I’m in a caring profession and like the nurse you describe I get paid For the hours I work and have job security. I don’t have to turn friends and family into customers and recruits so that’s good. If I’m sick or on holiday I still get paid. I didn’t have to pay to join my profession. I do have expenses; membership of professional bodies, insurance, commuting miles but a regular salary more than covers it. I also have rights over the way I am treated at work and clear pathways to progression or bonuses etc. I can’t see any of this in MLM but I do see how they sell people an inviting dream of status (CEO of Bossbabe Inc) and the attractive idea of flexibility, working from home and freedom. Anyone can see why people fall for it. They also sell the lie of female support, togetherness and empowerment; this is so destructive as it’s an industry that targets women and rinses them of cash and self respect - so many women have had their mental health seriously compromised by the isolation and attacks they receive when those that love bombed them with messages of empowerment and friendship change their tune when the distributor wants to leave or doesn’t hit targets. So MLM can feel like a fantastic thing when you first sign up but the drop out rate in the first year and the low earnings/losses for those that continue tell a different story, as do the people who have left MLM (often very successful people). To be long term happy in MLM you’ve also got to be happy that you’re harming those beneath you - that’s something your nurse doesn’t have to live with.

YouokHun · 25/04/2020 12:44

Sorry, no paragraphs ^^ !

PubsClubsMinistryOfSound · 25/04/2020 12:52

Have you ever thought how much you pay to have a job? Don't say that it cost nothing: you pay for travel to work, perhaps uniform or part of it depending where you work, you might be baying stationary staff too for yourself, using your phone for work etc. We just not used think that job is an investment too

It does cost me nothing though. I don't have any of those expenses. And why are you so confident that everyone pays for travel to work? Do you think people who work permanently from home or live within walking distance of their workplace don't exist?

YouokHun · 25/04/2020 12:56

@MrsJoshNavidi Body Shop has been one of the worst offenders during The Covid19 situation for bogus fundraising - getting customers to buy product to donate to medical staff; a profit for the MLM and a way of boosting sales volume, the medical staff can’t use most of the MLM products anyway. This shows them to be just as unethical as the next MLM. Plenty of people lose money in BSatH though for BS itself it’s their most profitable bit of their business - I wonder why?!

Tp93 · 25/04/2020 13:44

I'm ashamed to say I did MLM a few years back selling whitening toothpaste that didn't actually whiten- Nu Skin. I'm glad I didn't get the courage to try and recruit anyone but it's so embarrassing to think about all the posts I used to put up almost daily for a couple of months trying to sell it before I saw the light and realised it was all shit and how I got pulled in it!

YouokHun · 25/04/2020 13:55

@Tp93 I can see why people get pulled in; they make it look very enticing. Good for you seeing it for what it is and getting out before too much damage was done.

Tp93 · 25/04/2020 14:03

@Youokhun Yes I thought it was great the way the person who was recruiting was doing. Me and DH didn't have much money and had a 4 month old baby so I wasn't working so thought it was amazing. There were multiple secret groups with the "leaders" telling you what to post and how to respond to people and when to post things on Facebook. It was all.one big elaborate scheme. So embarrassing.

Firecarrier · 25/04/2020 17:15

Thankyou for the reply @BSintolerant this thread is enlightening! Particularly the replies from those suckered in. Confused

My family member recently went to an Arbonne car party (I think they're called) where one of her associates was 'given' a white Mercedes and they all posed around said car and put it on all of their profiles! I did a bit of digging and noticed that the person who got the Mercedes was a close family member of one of the high ups but they were toting her as this mature lady who'd done amazingly well to get to this level within a short period of time - suspicious Hmm

She pays to go to conferences where they all have to wear the same colour dress, pays to stay over in a hotel, travel etc, she's even started 'asking the universe for stuff'. Never saw her reading books before but she seems to read books now that I assume are recommended by them. She's convinced they're all her best buddies.

She won't even listen to her parents who have tried to tell her it's all bogus!

BSintolerant · 25/04/2020 18:44

@Firecarrier It makes you wonder how many shills these MLM companies use to sucker people in. I suspect certain bots who claim to be so-called independent business owners are actually employed by head office as influencers, or they’re making a fortune out of the training side. The training side of things is often referred to as the shadow pyramid.

Have you come across a book called Merchants of Deception? It was written by a former member of Amway who ended up in serious debt before he realised what he’d got himself and his family and friends into. He got suckered in by someone from his church - lots of these schemes were set up by Mormons. He realised that a lot of the top bots who claimed to be making serious money were doing so because they were involved in a training tools scam. Everyone was pressured into buying training books, mindset recordings, and travelling miles to be brainwashed at Amway conventions. The author had to put up with death threats and litigation for going public with what he discovered. These people are seriously nuts.

If you google Merchants of Deception you’ll find a free pdf copy of it.

Incidentally, the anti-lockdown protests in Michigan are reported to have been funded by the family who founded Amway. The TS Life founder has had quite a bit to say about the lockdown protests and Covid-19. Batshit nuts just about sums up some of these idiotic bots.

ooooohbetty · 26/04/2020 22:17

This thread is fascinating. Ive already listened to podcasts and watched a few documentaries about MLMs. I've never been tempted by selling anything from home and have always questioned people at work who've been using juice plus and Herbalife. I'm currently inundated by young women pushing fm cosmetics on Instagram. Just looked at the website and it's an MLM. It never ends.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 27/04/2020 08:24

My Younique bot is really going for it now....funny thing is the only people who comment on her tedious make up posts are other bots....a quick look at their fb profiles confirms it....and her daughter is the only one buying anything.

PineappleDanish · 27/04/2020 08:59

Meant to add that the language is all chosen to make it sound like a proper job - Hiring, earn, income, apply.

But it's not that at all. The best bit was that this was posted on Friday, not one "like" on the post by this morning.

Mucklowe · 27/04/2020 09:21

Why do people get so excited by a bloody white Mercedes? If you're asking me to basically whore myself and my shitty products to all my friends and family, at least tempt me with a decent car!

PineappleDanish · 27/04/2020 09:22

Especially a white Mercedes that you're paying for yourself.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 27/04/2020 09:31

Lol it also amuses me when they post gems such as 'my inbox is on fire...dont miss out' etc etc especially when you know not one person has ordered or messaged them.

majesticallyawkward · 27/04/2020 10:10

@myusernamewastakenbyme I've noticed that too, my SIL yoonique bot only gets likes from her mum who is also a hunbot... it looks like she's recruited a couple of people recently, or at least is tagging a couple of people in about the AMAAAAZZZZZIIIINGG box they're getting full of epic products (or a £60 box of samples and a clumpy mascara to the rest of us).

My favourite was a live video she did where my brother can be heard muttering 'ah not that shit again' 😂

myusernamewastakenbyme · 27/04/2020 10:18

@majesticallyawkward lol thats really funny...your brother has got the measure of yooooooniqueGrin

Asuitablecat · 27/04/2020 12:18

I've become slightly obsessed with the bot I know. It's an mlm beginning with.A. And wondering how much language research has been.done on them. I notice the product name isn't dropped in too often.
