to be irrationally annoyed with the furloughed?

I know I am but I'm jealous that they have all day to lie in the sun, home educate their dc, bake, sew, watch TV whilst I'm busier than ever trying to do it all whilst working from home.
I heard on the radio it's going to cost £50 billion over 3 months and I feel annoyed that the economy is totally f**d because we're paying everyone's salaries, and they're at home doing nothing.
I also know none of this is anyone's fault and IABU.

OP posts:

OP you know YABU, at least you've recognised that.

I am wfh and am immensely grateful. I am not jealous at all of those who are furloughed. So what if people choose to sit in their gardens or go for walks while I work. What else is there to do?

Thisisworsethananticpated · 24/04/2020 07:46

Don’t be jealous
You are far more secure

Who the fuck knew every Tom dick and happy would take this up ?
Who knows what penalties and terms the govt will deploy later ??
Who knows if they even get their job back at the end , what happens come June

MrsPoll · 24/04/2020 07:49

Currently furloughed and the company I work for doesnt have any funds to pay us. Cant resign as I'm pregnant. I'd rather be working tbh.

KatherineJaneway · 24/04/2020 07:51

YANBU. We can all be envious of others at times because the grass always seems greener.

Dumbie · 24/04/2020 07:52

@shinebrightlikea exactly the same in my company. Those furloughed simply don't have work because of social distancing rules. They're job is no less secure than mine.

When this is all over and the world has changed, the shape of the business will change too. Those that aren't totally core to the business have something to worry about.

Starlightstarbright1 · 24/04/2020 07:55

Yabu . I am working full time from home and homeschooling. I am very lucky.

It isn’t a holiday . There is nowhere to go . You can’t go to the park with the kids, groups with pre school, pub or coffee catch up with mates. I consider myself lucky I am working

Treacletoots · 24/04/2020 07:55

I would rather be at work.... And you try baking when you cant get flour for fucking any price and you're full time child care for a toddler that you can't take out to do any of their usual stuff. I'd happily swap.

Dumbie · 24/04/2020 07:57

@treacletots you know there are plenty of people having to manage your situation and work right?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 24/04/2020 08:04

The OP has already acknowledged that they are being unreasonable- cut them a bit of slack. Many furloughed people would rather be working and earning 100%. Some but not all will be more at risk of redundancy or businesses going bust. I think the OP knows that but working right now is also tough and must be hard to see people with so much free time and still being paid 80%. We need to try and see everyone's point of view here.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 24/04/2020 08:04

I'm furloughed and I'm jealous of those working. I have no kids at home, there is nothing more I can do regarding the house and garden (both very small), and I'm bored beyond belief. The thought of this going on until June feels me with dread.

Notverybright · 24/04/2020 08:04

Who the fuck knew every Tom dick and happy would take this up?

I think this is the problem. I'm surprised to hear about companies being allowed to furlough staff that can wfh. I can see how that would cause resentment.

HettySunshine · 24/04/2020 08:06

I haven't been furloughed but two out of my team of four have. Myself and the other person have taken on our colleagues workload.

And we've both been asked to take a 30% pay cut.

So our two colleagues are at home with their children with no work to worry about on 80% of their salaries and me and my other colleagues are doing much increased workloads for 70% of ours.

It's hard not to feel envious.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/04/2020 08:10

I think what we can gather from this thread is that a lot of companies are taking the piss. Furloughing staff when there is still work for them to do and then passing that work over to other colleagues isn't what the scheme was designed for and it's not on.

But it's not the fault of the employees, it's the company bosses that are at fault for doing this.

SimonJT · 24/04/2020 08:10

I’m furloughed, £2,500 barely covers my mortgage and service charge, I work in finance, work is incredibly busy, they’re just tight bastards.

My boyfriend was laid off.

Losing the majority of your income is shit.

RabidChinchilla · 24/04/2020 08:15

YABU.

I was so bored after 1.5 weeks furlough I accepted a temporary role helping the council (my employer has been assisting them). I'm only making £70 a month more than if I stayed on furlough and that's assuming I bring my own food and don't buy sandwiches etc.

WhateverHappenedToMe · 24/04/2020 08:17

I'm very grateful that I will continue to work full-time throughout this whole outbreak.

What I do find objectionable, however, is frequently seeing people who are not working having long periods of close social interaction (like the ladies I see every day getting together for a three hour chat) while I'm working flat out to assist in the development of treatments and vaccines.

AgentJohnson · 24/04/2020 08:18

Where does finger pointing actually get you OP? I’m sure there are far worse off than you who must think you’ve got it made.

Misery loves company and all that but 😒.

Springersrock · 24/04/2020 08:19

I'm surprised to hear about companies being allowed to furlough staff that can wfh

I can work from home but I’m furloughed because we don’t have any work to do. We’ve furloughed everyone apart from the business owner

We manufacture products for the leisure industry, we have plenty of work on our books, but due to restrictions on non-essential travel and the fact that the transport companies our customers need to use to get to us, are only allowing key workers and freight to travel, no-one can get here

I’d love to be at work, we could be operating, it’s easy to maintain social distancing in our factory but it’s not going to happen until people can start moving around a bit more freely again

Sparklingplasters · 24/04/2020 08:19

DH is furloughed, the cap means that he is much worse off, no allowances paid so we are paying for a car to sit on the drove.

Notverybright · 24/04/2020 08:21

Ugh, I guess this thread illustrates just how pointless jealousy is as an emotion. Everyone looking at others lives and thinking about how bad they have it. We're all having a bad time at the moment, but we are all lucky in other ways too. I hope that doesn't sound to come-by-ah.

I take back what said before I do feel sorry for people wfh especially with small children.

Lockheart · 24/04/2020 08:34

I'm working from home and I'm busier than I ever have been. I'm regularly working until 9pm and at weekends, and today is an enforced days holiday which I've been told I have to take (everyone in the firm has to take some holiday). However I'm shortly going to be working because I had an emergency call from a manager at 7pm last night. I'll be working this weekend too.

I'm fucking knackered and I've never been more stressed.

It's very hard not to feel envious of my housemates who are furloughed and sitting in the garden reading. I'd love a few weeks rest on nearly full pay.

thecatsthecats · 24/04/2020 08:34

I'm the opposite.

I'm incredibly annoyed by the fact my staff are angling for furlough.

By very careful management after years of mis-spending by others, I've got the company to a very secure position. We provide a secondary service to keyworkers that can easily be done from home. Only one has particular childcare issues, and even that is split with his partner. We've not imposed any strict limitations on holiday usage, put in a pay cut, anything. We're flexible about work expectations, and have kept them on background tasks, so they're definitely not working harder than before.

Frankly, they seem like no more than spoiled children at this stage, who seem to be completely unaware of how bad other people have it.

userxx · 24/04/2020 08:35

@Notverybright The problem is nobody is checking, the scheme was opened and everyone can apply. Hmrc say they will be doing checks eventually!

Dumbie · 24/04/2020 08:48

@thecatsthecats please don't underestimate how hard it is looking after children through this and working. Even if it is split.
My children need full attention for 12 hours a day, around that is the cooking, cleaning, shopping and we both need to find 8 hours to work each day. There just isn't enough time and we are exhausted.

Umnoway · 24/04/2020 08:54

It’s not really their fault they have been furloughed, Christ. Anyone would think people have opted to have a pandemic just so they can fart about at home doing the gardening.
