To ask what would be a fair price for three hours of carpenting work?

Basically as it says in the title. I had some issues with one of our windows (crooked in the frame because of a storm and needed new handles), it took three hours to fix, and I was presented with a very high bill (I won't mention the amount yet because I don't want to influence the answers). I am in the London area, so used to paying extra, but woah. Just wondering what you would have guessed is reasonable, because I feel like I was so far off and cannot decide whether I am being cheated and should pursue it.

Carpenting work tends to be quite expensive (assuming it was a legitamate carpenter not just a handy man). So I would guess £150.

WhyCantIthinkOfAgoodOne · 23/04/2020 15:46

(as a minimum)

Lippy1234 · 23/04/2020 15:48

£180 plus vat

Thighmageddon · 23/04/2020 15:48

We paid £80 for half an hour so it would've been £240 for three hours here.

funnelfanjo · 23/04/2020 15:48

If you're in London I'm going to guess somewhere in the region of £75 call-out plus £50 per hour plus parts. So £250?

11MrsLuther · 23/04/2020 15:50

I would think about £80 p/hour for a skilled tradesman. Plus VAT.

pilates · 23/04/2020 15:50

£250
Are we close?

fluffdeloop · 23/04/2020 15:51

300 for london I'd guess. I always pay a fortune here for trades.

Cuddling57 · 23/04/2020 15:52

They are expensive.
I wanted new doors hanged. The labour charge was a fortune! Wondering if I can do it myself !

Cuddling57 · 23/04/2020 15:52

£250?

TimeForChange123 · 23/04/2020 15:53

£200?

ilovecakeandwine · 23/04/2020 15:55

£2-£300 depending on these handles were fitted .did you not get a quote before did the work ?

WickedlyPetite · 23/04/2020 15:55

Carpenter? - £60 an hour upwards.

Joiner? - £25 an hour upwards.

MaddieElla · 23/04/2020 15:58

My husband is a carpenter and would charge half a day for this, assuming he needed to fetch the materials for you. So £80-100. If it was just the time at your house he was charging for (if you'd supplied the materials) he would charge by the hour.

Per hour he charges £18.50 but I'm always telling him he's too cheap.

percentageshelp · 23/04/2020 15:58

Probably 200-300

percentageshelp · 23/04/2020 15:59

Did you not get some quotes before going ahead?

Thescrewinthetuna · 23/04/2020 16:00

A few hundred

AvalancheKit · 23/04/2020 16:01

£300 plus VAT, but he must be tall and thin, wizened a little, with a beard, half moon spectacles wearing a white smock and carrying his tools in a leather bag. Otherwise, perhaps nearer £240 plus VAT.

AvalancheKit · 23/04/2020 16:02

Oh, and a trace of a smile but not overly cheery completes the look.

FourTeaFallOut · 23/04/2020 16:06

I'm going to say £280 + vat.

LailaDay · 23/04/2020 16:13

It was a rush job because the window could no longer close; that is why there was no quote beforehand. I also expected to pay more because it was a rush job (he came the next day). But you all are not even close yet.

£600 (cash)

Yerroblemom1923 · 23/04/2020 16:19

£3000

Nicknacky · 23/04/2020 16:21

Can you not just say how much rather than pages of guessing?

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 23/04/2020 16:22
