To ask those that go to independent schools what fee discount has been offered

My child goes to a nursery attached to an independent primary school. Has anyone going to an independent been offered a fee discount? Ours have offered a blanket nominal discount for all years in the school, but obviously in nursery they will only be doing a tiny bit of "work", so it seems more appropriate for a bigger discount the lower down the school you are. AIBU? We will be giving notice shortly too as jobs are likely to go. Nursery for us was there for socialisation and childcare.

20 percent across the board from reception through to sixth form

Celeriacacaca · 22/04/2020 23:08

This from friend who is a senior leader at a pre-prep - 10% which she thinks is too little.

Jiggeriepokerie · 22/04/2020 23:09

The nursery fees will be hugely different to the prep fees. Generally nursery/pre-prep fees are comparable with any other nursery.

I think the max you'll get in prep, and it's generally only for siblings or a small bursary, would be 10%. Depends on how much the school needs the business really.

Devlesko · 22/04/2020 23:09

25% off last terms bill, which we received today.
Ours is MDS though, so, similar funding to state schools.

StSaulOfSnacks · 22/04/2020 23:11

Fuck all 10%.

Level75 · 22/04/2020 23:11

30% (primary)

Jiggeriepokerie · 22/04/2020 23:11

I'd be worried about a school who was happy to give 25% discount for no apparent reason. Unless there was a reason if voids!

Level75 · 22/04/2020 23:12

That's off the summer term fees

Jiggeriepokerie · 22/04/2020 23:12

Ah, are these discounts to reflect the current situation? It's not a regular thing?

snowballer · 22/04/2020 23:13

25% - prep

AmelieTaylor · 22/04/2020 23:16

15% day pupils
25% boarding

Plus still running a FULL timetable via Teams plus Ex Circ stuff.

Gemma2019 · 22/04/2020 23:36

20% for us, year 7. But still providing a full online timetable. I agree that you should get a bigger discount in nursery, in addition to the early years funded hours.

whatthefuckishappening · 22/04/2020 23:37

Sorry I meant off this term's fees in light of Coronavirus

15% off independent day school fees with pupils following their usual timetable online.

whatthefuckishappening · 22/04/2020 23:46

They don't take early years funding.

Percypigsareyummy · 22/04/2020 23:46

25% across all years and no fee increase next year, also a terms paid notice does not need to be given. So far online lessons and virtual classes have been really good.

whatthefuckishappening · 22/04/2020 23:48

Do you think it's worth asking for a bigger discount and what would be a fair amount?

OP posts:
RAOK · 22/04/2020 23:50

20%

Davros · 22/04/2020 23:51

25% and set up a hardship fund
Private London 6th form college

Howaboutanewname · 22/04/2020 23:51

If you want the school there at the end of this - and some independents won’t be - please pay the fees. Please recognise that even though some savings may be made through furlough of non- teaching staff (and possibly some teaching staff), if you want a full programme of education, you are going to have to pay the fees. You can’t expect teachers to work without pay. It seems to me that some parents want the education to continue but don’t want to pay for it.

bananaskinsnomnom · 22/04/2020 23:51

School I work in is doing 25% off for reception through to year 8. The nursery (Starting the term they turn 3) is higher discount dependent on number of days attending - Full timers are receiving 50% off - so anywhere between 20 and 50% discount.

They’ve also broken it down into two separate payments for the term instead of one at the start. So so far, everyone has paid until half term. If the schools are sent back before the end of term, the fees will increase depending on circumstances, so not back to full, as there won’t be matches and likely many staff off so full program won’t happen. I think they’ve also said if we return before summer it will be packed lunch only.

Bluewater1 · 22/04/2020 23:52

10%

Gemma2019 · 22/04/2020 23:52

Wow we used to get about £850 a term discount for early years funding. Shocking they don't pass it on at your school.

Howaboutanewname · 22/04/2020 23:52

Staff still expected to work? Pay them.

bananaskinsnomnom · 22/04/2020 23:54

I think 30% is very generous. My school is finding this hard. You may not agree with how it’s presented but this can improve and develop (and likely will as the term goes on and everyone gets the hang of it) - and if they are providing enough - it’s never going to be as engaging as it could be in the classroom.
