How often do you wash your hands?

I've never washed my hands so much since this covid 19 pandemic. I wash my hands constantly throughout the day. For example, if I've taken a box of something out of the fridge, I will remove item from the box, discard the box and then wash my hands.

I wash my hands after if I pour myself a drink (from a bottle). Anything I touch, I wash my hands after wards or I will wash the item if I'm able to. I have cleaning wipes and hand sanitiser in my car so I sanitise my hands, I clean the wheel/gear/handbrake, etc with the wipes, sanitise my hands again, I wipe my phone and keys down, then door handles etc. The thought/process is tiring!

I feel like I'm getting quite obsessive but it keeps my mind at ease slightly with this whole pandemic going on.

About the same as you. Sometimes I alternate hand sanitiser with hand washing depending on where I am. Sometimes I wear vinyl gloves.

TheoriginalLEM · 22/04/2020 22:42

That is waaaayyy too much, you are going to dry your skin and it is going to become inflammed and prone to infection.

I was my hands if i go to the toilet, after touching the post and if i go out, i wipe the shopping down as I put it away so no need for excessive handwashing- it's counter productive

JaceLancs · 22/04/2020 22:42

I only wash my hands if I have left my house and had any contact with anyone
If I don’t leave the house I wash as normal after using toilet etc
If I go out for lone walk not stopping etc don’t really feel need to but wash anyway
I wash after ask supermarket trips

WilburIsSomePig · 22/04/2020 22:44

The same as TheoriginalLEM. I've always washed my hands fairly often anyway so nothing much has changed.

mynameiscalypso · 22/04/2020 22:48

I wash my hands when I come in from outside (which is rare) but otherwise, no different to normal.

ScarfLadysBag · 22/04/2020 22:50

No different to normal except if I've taken in a parcel or shopping. Then I wash my hands after disposing of the packaging. But during the day if I'm just in the house and garden etc, no different to usual.

Mummyshark2019 · 22/04/2020 22:51

I wash mine same as you. Mind you, always did. Hands are very dry!

Echobelly · 22/04/2020 22:53

If I'm about to go our, have come back in, have touched some post that's just come in, when I've been to loo. Don't go wild about it now I'm not going out much as my skin just falls to bits with frequent washing, even with moisturiser.

Malvinaaa81 · 22/04/2020 22:55

I feel that if you have had a health condition that may make infection dangerous, you will wash your hands often.

Right now, I do wonder about handling the post, parcels, and any deliveries. Some people are even quarantining items delivered.

MedSchoolRat · 22/04/2020 22:57

The studies that show washing hands reduces influenza or SARS transmission (similar transmission pathways to covid) are mostly based on washing hands at least 5x/day. That's it. Just 5x/day.

Some of them have a > 8x or a >10x/day categories.
I am puzzling how to find the optimal number in a scientific model, btw.

Not 25x/day or more which sounds like what OP is doing.
Too often & you risk damaging your lovely skin which protects you.

Just 5 or 10x/day will be enough.
I can supply references.

PhilCornwall1 · 22/04/2020 23:01

Only if I've been to the toilet.

Sparklesocks · 22/04/2020 23:03

If I’m inside all day I will wash my hands the same amount I would before covid - after using the toilet, before and after handling food etc.

If I go outside I will be more vigilant, ensuring I do as soon as I get back in.

Also after handling post/deliveries, and before and after taking out my wheely bin (this has been requested by our council to help protect the refuse collectors).

Alsohuman · 22/04/2020 23:07

When I’ve been to the loo, before preparing food, when I come in from a walk/shopping, after putting the shopping away, after handling the post. So approximately ten times a day.

megletthesecond · 22/04/2020 23:10

5x a day?!
If I'm doing tidying around the house I'm more like 5x an hour.

AmelieTaylor · 22/04/2020 23:13

I cleaned the house thoroughly. I wash/disinfect everything that comes into the house, including all the food shopping - then I know that everything inside the house is pretty safe. Obviously you can't be 109%, but 🤷🏻‍♀️

So, because I know everything has been cleaned/disinfected, I don't need to wash my hands when I make a coffee or get each item of food out the fridge etc

Most other staff has been in the house for weeks now, so will be 'safe'

So I wash my hands

First thing
After handling laundry
Before preparing food
Before eating
When I come in the house (on the rare occasion I go out)
After handling post/packages

OhMargo · 22/04/2020 23:14

Apart from the usuals, toilet, food prep and so on, I wash hands when I come in contact with something else.

Like post, deliveries, etc.

Anything outside the normal means washing, my poor hands are wrecked!

Wanderlust21 · 22/04/2020 23:17

The usual amount. I am just extra...well, extra about it when I come in from outside. I live along though or I think I'd be doing it constantly lol.

Deelish75 · 22/04/2020 23:19

Dont know how many times a day it varies. I wash them
after using the toilet,
before preparing/eating food,
putting something in the bin,
touch post or parcel,
coming into the house.

Slith · 22/04/2020 23:28

Never.

I suppose doing the washing up probably counts.

Lovely1a2b3c · 22/04/2020 23:55

I wash mine frequently throughout the day.

The CDC suggests washing your hands:

Before, during, and after preparing food

Before eating food

Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick

Before and after treating a cut or wound

After using the toilet

After changing nappies or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet

After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing

After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste

After handling pet food or pet treats

After touching garbage

I guess I would add:

  • When you get home from outside (our government's advice during the Covid outbreak)
  • After handling post (during the outbreak)

and

  • After handling laundry (again- as clothes may have Covid on them after shopping or just general grot/bacteria).
Lovely1a2b3c · 22/04/2020 23:57

I could only wash my hands 5x a day if I went to the loo twice, ate packet food (as more handwashes would be needed if I was cooking/preparing any food) three times and touched nothing else all day.

lljkk · 22/04/2020 23:57

If I washed my hands after each of those occasions I'd spend my entire life at the sink. Especially the cat contact.

Lovely1a2b3c · 23/04/2020 00:01

Yeah Llijkk, not sure about the pet contact thing. I don't really wash my hands every time I pat my dog- not sure anyone really does! When I feed her and pick up after her then I do though and I wouldn't eat a snack after patting her without washing my hands.

After coming in from the shops or just being outside
After the toilet
Before handling food
After changing the cat litter
After taking the rubbish out
After bringing the post in or touching any shopping that's just come in.

I think that's it but there might be other times too
