To think I shouldn't be named and shamed for not clapping

I clapped originally and it was lovely and everyone turned out for it here
Last week, after a rough night with DS I fell asleep after he went down and missed the clapping
A post went on our community Facebook group actually naming and shaming me.
I was mortified. The post said everyone else turned out and I showed the street up and if I can't spend a minute showing my appreciation I don't deserve to use the NHS if I or my family get ill
I ignored it at the time but I can't get it out of my head it's really upset me.

Thank goodness we have no community facebook page!
I haven't clapped once. I support the NHS by avoiding unnecessary journeys, shopping once a week and social distancing. What benefit is banging a few pots and pans to anyone?
This situation really has brought out the very best and the worst in people. Clap shaming and neighbour reporting being the absolute worst.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 23/04/2020 11:31

I clapped the first couple of times, but it’s just stupid now.

To think I shouldn't be named and shamed for not clapping
gingerbeerandlemonade · 23/04/2020 11:36

Wtf. Please reply and tell them you were asleep. That us ridiculous and disgusting that they name shamed you.

Chillicheese123 · 23/04/2020 11:41

What the fuck. I’m appalled. I’d go absolutely bat shit

Chillicheese123 · 23/04/2020 11:45

FWIW we haven’t clapped since the second week. We have been doing other stuff, bedtime, and last week was on a zoom call and lost track of time. I think sending my frontline medical worker mum/auntie/SIL/uncle (a lot of my family are NHS to be honest, some dental peeps and social work in there too) flowers, gin and dd’s rainbow pics to support them (and sent biccies and drawings to their workplaces too) and texting/calling them daily to check in is a good way to show my appreciation, not clapping like a seal at my front door.

jackdawdawn · 23/04/2020 11:45

@IStressheadI That must have been absolutely shattering and infuriating for you. It never occurred to me that most babies and very young ones are being put to bed at that time, but of course - it's getting difficult enough with the bright nights! Pots and pans and whistles, ffs.

If you lived in Scotland you would probably also have a bagpiper, so thank your lucky stars if you don't...

TabbyMumz · 23/04/2020 11:48

"Please reply and tell them you were asleep."
No. You dont need to give a reason. It's not compulsory and he is wrong in calling you out. You do not answer to him. Dont give an excuse.

BacklashStarts · 23/04/2020 11:57

I would reply, but it’s up to you. I would either put what you put here and add that if it’s policed it becomes meaningless as people are then doing to do avoid being judged as you have been rather than I show appreciation. Or I would say “have you considered that we will still be neighbours after this? What an awkward atmosphere you are trying to create on our usually friendly street.”

ilovecakeandwine · 23/04/2020 12:01

I don't clap , I did the first week or 2 but I'm not standing on my door clapping every week I feel a bit silly.
I looked out last week and only my NDN clapping on my street .
A street near me arranged for everyone to dance on Sunday and posted on social media . I'm not sure of the reason and nice that it was it looked like a bit of a mass gathering although I'm sure they were 2 metres away . I just think if you want to do it do it but the best way to help the nhs is stay home .
I'd be annoyed if someone tried to shame me but tbh I'd just ignore the idiot . It's really shown some people how horrible they are .

Toly · 23/04/2020 12:25

I’m an NHS worker and I wish they would just stop the clapping now. Sorry to other key workers who might like it but I just find it cringey and forced.

DominaShantotto · 23/04/2020 12:34

I dread clapping day. We get shit from the neighbours for not doing it - but I'm usually upstairs re-settling the child who's woken up from someone blaring their car horn outside for the NHS (claps aren't loud enough apparently) continuously for about 5 minutes. Then there's the social media clap evaluation process where we get a "great turnout for Town Street, shame number 37 couldn't be bothered"... "bit disappointed in Smith Street tonight" and the "oh I really loved the singer who got her entire PA system set out to give us a concert at clapping time" and the gathered street outside slagging off those who didn't clap (weather being what it is windows are open and sound carries).

CodenameVillanelle · 23/04/2020 12:38

I clapped the first week. Now I'm done. I'm not going to do it every Thursday for the bloody foreseeable as it becomes meaningless and feels forced and stupid. Your neighbours can fuck off!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 23/04/2020 12:40

That's so silly. If you want to do it yourself that's fine. Dont go shaming others who dont however! On the local facebook there is comments about certain roads not having good turn outs and hopefully better next week..what is it to them?! It's just odd how people are so bothered about people not clapping.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 23/04/2020 12:42

Week one, I worked through and missed it by ten minutes. Week 2 and 3 I was out there. I go out when I can for as long as I want. If it is forced through shame, it is worthless. Ask the moderator or admin to take the post down as it is aggressive and bullying AND NONE OF HER FECKING BUSINESS WHAT YOU WERE DOING!

CHIRIBAYA · 23/04/2020 12:54

Wonder how many of these hypocrites are Tory voters - or how many of them take responsiblilty for their own health and well-being? !0% of NHS budget goes on just one illness - diabetes. 1957 concerns were raised about lung canger and smoking and despite all the years of education people still choose to smoke. Still they get treated when others who are ill through no fault of their own either go without or have to wait. How much are they thinking of the burdren they are putting on the NHS with their lifestyle choices? You can support the NHS in far more meaningful and authentic ways. This clapping is just tribalism now. Do not demean yourself by responding.

LastTrainEast · 23/04/2020 12:57

The clapping meant something the first time, but now I see it as about the people clapping not the NHS so I won't. If someone complained to me I'd probably just laugh at them.

GabsAlot · 23/04/2020 13:05

boingy-i was so annoyed about the display on the bridge last week-why there wasnt an official telling off i dont know

heyyoucoolcatsnkittens · 23/04/2020 13:08

I would reply.

You shouldn’t have to justify yourself but hopefully it will make them look/feel stupid.

Lou670 · 23/04/2020 13:24

@ 81Beverley. Excellent response.

lionheart · 23/04/2020 13:29

It's almost as if they want to be clapped for clapping.

As others have said OP, this is not on you.

MissEliza · 23/04/2020 13:47

My kids are grown up but the first thing I thought about when 8pm was chosen is that it would be a nightmare for people with young children.

Maduixa · 23/04/2020 13:51

The post said everyone else turned out and I showed the street up...

Do they imagine there's some sort of systematic government (or illuminati) surveillance checking up on who hasn't clapped? "Right, there are 47 registered residents in Pemberton Close, and only 46 clapped on the evening of 21 April. No more NHS for them!" If anyone is thinking anything negative about lack of attendance at clapping, then the "shaming" posts are doing more damage than one exhausted, hard-working person unintentionally falling asleep. I don't use FaceBook, but there must be some way to block/mute this person if their eejitry is making you uncomfortable.

Furrydog7 · 23/04/2020 13:54

The clapping meant something the first time but now it is a complete and utter waste of time as it feels forced. I hate clapping day so much. I live in a first floor flat and last week i heard all the stupid pot banging even though my windows were shut and i was listening to some music through my headphones. I just felt like opening the window and telling the twats to shut up.

Hoggleludo · 23/04/2020 14:02

Or reply that you were vomiting

And if they want to be sprayed next time with vomit. You'll gladly come out!

Hoggleludo · 23/04/2020 14:03

Or yes. Say you were making headband. For the nurses. Which my mum is. As apparently the nurses need them to cover their ears. As the masks dig in.
