To feel so sorry for all the staff losing their jobs, but Cath Kidston was a load of over priced wank.

Just read that Cath Kidston won't be opening up again after the lock down. My sympathies are with the people who will now be out of a job, but I really didn't get it.

Personal preference, but I find the 1950s idolatry of twee flower prints and cupcakes and china and little pinnies a tad bit regressive from a feminist perspective

Translation: I have superior intellect to you silly, inferior females who like CK ditzy prints and spots. You clearly aspire to being housewives while I go about being BUSY and IMPORTANT. Hmm

Cath Kidston was never about the 1950s. It was retro in parts but had lots of modern aspects too. Sneeriness is never an attractive quality in a person.

Ninkanink · 22/04/2020 19:48

Adding to the 🙄🙄🙄

Harking back (and providing a counterbalance to current trends) is not automatically regressive. And that’s actually quite a shortsighted and shallow view to take, particularly from a supposedly feminist perspective.

PinkiOcelot · 22/04/2020 19:55

Not to my taste at all. Awful for the staff losing their jobs though.

nevermorelenore · 22/04/2020 19:56

I think it was around the mid-00s that CK prints were on everything and those 50s style dresses were really popular. I remember people having CK print phone cases, pens, lunch boxes etc.

When I went to a store a couple of years ago it really hadn't changed much since then. Vintage nostalgia has moved on to the 70s and 90s so the distinctive CK look just seemed dated. Perhaps they could have gone for different prints and mixed it up a bit.

Yorkshirelass04 · 22/04/2020 20:06

No Nink, recycling trends from bygone eras isn't automatically regressive. But oozing the tradwife vibe is in my opinion.

Apparently CK's best selling product was an ironing board. Wonder how many men bought them? 😂

Ftaod, I'm not even accusing anyone shopping there for being anti feminist even though it doesn't sit well with me. We all do anti feminist things all the time, depending on the definition.

lachy · 22/04/2020 20:08

I've had a fair few things from Cath Kidston and I will be sorry to see them leave the high street.

But the demise of the high street is, in part, because we stopped using the shops. ( and before you shoot me down in flames I know that rents and rates are also to blame, as are out of town shopping centres and online shopping)

I like going shopping, I like to browse, and wherever possible I buy from a physical shop rather than online. Its far easier to determine the quality, cut, fit or value of a product when you can touch it.

So yes. I do feel incredibly sorry that there will be significant job losses, shops closing on our high streets will impact the female workforce greatly.

PleaseStopSayingNewNormal · 22/04/2020 20:09

I like retro/vintage patterns and styles. Not everyone has the same tastes. What some describe as is twee, I find cheerful and happy, and "sleek and modern" usually translates to cold and utterly devoid of charm imo, but I wouldn't say that to someone who obviously loved cold and charmless. What's the point?

Oilyoilyoilgob · 22/04/2020 20:19

@HowManyWoodChucks that is so true, you summed up my thoughts. Always feeling busy or with a to do list but lockdown has been lovely for a slower pace to enjoy doing house/garden stuff.

I’m looking forward to one day when it’s back to real life for a wander around a city centre!

I like ck homeware, their tea towels and mugs are cute and fit in with my country style kitchen. Some stuff now is quite angular and sharp, I like a homely look for my kitchen. I like the bird print on stuff too 😍

Oilyoilyoilgob · 22/04/2020 20:21

God the poster on about liking flower prints being regressive to feminism

😂😂😂

Yorkshirelass04 · 22/04/2020 20:24

@Oilyoilyoilgob not sure I actually said that?

Yorkshirelass04 · 22/04/2020 20:35

@PineappleDanish Why have you chosen to make this personal?

The things you have insinuated about me are very rude and hurtful.

I am allowed to critique a brand.

DrManhattan · 22/04/2020 22:00

@Yorkshirelass04
You totally are. Isnt that the whole point of these boards. Be boring if we all has the same opinions.

bettybattenburg · 22/04/2020 22:12

I think it's had it's day, fashions have changed and they haven't moved with the times, they are still from the days of the ikea chuck out the chintz adverts.

OpthalmosVerde · 23/04/2020 07:55

Yorkshirelasa - I don’t think PineappleDanish has ‘insinuated’ anything rude about you - she’s just written how you are coming across. I agree with her take. If you find that hurtful, then it’s on you, people are allowed to have their views on what you are saying in a public forum Smile. What you’ve written has no doubt been hurtful to other people, also, you specifically invited people to disagree with you and then get all pouty when they do!

You seem very confused to me in your thinking about feminism, FWIW, how can it be all about choice if then some specific things/tastes are regressive? That’s a rhetorical question here btw as it’s off-topic for this thread, although has been discussed and debated many times on the feminism boards.

PineappleDanish · 23/04/2020 08:07

What you have said, Yorkshire, is that the particular brand under discussion is for silly women who aspire to be 1950s housewives. Can you not see how offensive that is to the many people on this thread who said they liked a lot of the products?

ALovelyBitOfSquirrel · 23/04/2020 08:11

@OpthalmosVerde great post, I totally agree

@PineappleDanish has written exactly what I thought but put it nicely [grin]@Yorkshirelass04 Dont be so dramatic Grin

OpthalmosVerde · 23/04/2020 08:16

I also realised this morning I love my matching Cath Kidston luggage tags & passport holder.

I guess the thing in common for all the CK items I like are that they don’t need replacing often, if ever. So unless you are obsessed with it, you’re not going to be shopping there regularly even if you do like the brand.

Wondering if there are any online sales now?!?

OpthalmosVerde · 23/04/2020 08:18

As an aside, I generally manage to be fiercely feminist as fuck whilst also rocking my Cath Kidston squirrel pattern pencil case, just a general FYI Grin

LaurieMarlow · 23/04/2020 08:20

And why wouldn’t you be? Grin

Umnoway · 23/04/2020 08:22

I got my DC’s first ever school bags from there, very cute prints and the quality was good. They’ve outgrown it now, too twee for them really but I am still fond of CK.

I should add I predicted their demise before Christmas. They were sending endless emails with crazy discount codes, they never usually offer any discount at all.

LaurieMarlow · 23/04/2020 08:27

One of the things I found them good for was boys clothes (interesting given the conversation on here). In a sea of sludgy green crap, they have really attractive designs.

DS’s have coats from there, PJs and it was the only place I could find a passable shirt for DS for a wedding.

Yorkshirelass04 · 23/04/2020 08:31

I haven’t insinuated anything about an individual that shops at CK. I wouldn’t do that, because that’s rude and unfair. I’ve said the brand is regressive and not to my taste. I’m happy for people to disagree with my view on feminism on the brand, however saying my views come from intellectual superiority and because ‘I’m so busy and important’ - really?
I’m sorry things have turned sour. Didn’t mean for it to. Let’s leave things there.

LaurieMarlow · 23/04/2020 08:36

If you could explain to us what’s ‘regressive’ about flower prints that would be very helpful Yorkshirelass

Pseudosudocrem · 23/04/2020 08:36

I really like CK - the older stuff when it was all bright clashing colours (the new stuff is horrible and washed out). I don't wear the clothes because I can't afford them, and I am not the right shape. But I have a lot of the older home ware and bags, wallpaper etc. It's bright, cheerful and homely, and hell that will actually do for me. If that makes me some kind of radical accidental anti feminist..well fuck. That's fine by me too. I'm snuggly and happy with my horribly outdated and twee crochet blankets, mismatched painted furniture and polka dots. Yay!

SoupDragon · 23/04/2020 08:36

I haven’t insinuated anything about an individual that shops at CK

By saying what you have about the brand you are indeed insinuating it about the people who shop there.
