Morrisons cancelled elderly mother's delivery. I nurse in London

Please help. I am a nurse in London. My elderly mother is self isolating and lives around 300 miles away from me. Before lockdown I stocked up her cupboards. Her friends are all elderly and self isolating too and no other family near by. She gets milk delivered. I was only able to arrange a delivery for her with one supermarket and that was to be this weekend. I have just logged onto to place her order and received a message saying her delivery slot has expired and there are no current slots available in her area. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do either via Morrisons or somewhere else as she is running low on food? Thanks

I’m so sorry to hear this - hopefully you can find a solution from the many suggestions here. It does make me quite cross though - there must be thousands of people in this position who can pay for their shopping but just need someone to do it. I’ve volunteered to be one of the NHS volunteers - the app says I’ve clocked up 438 hours so far, but that is just me saying I’m available with no requests for help coming in. Meanwhile our PCC asks every week if people want (paid for) food boxes so I can imagine that those who are self-isolating are having to ask for those even if they can pay, as the coordination isn’t there to match them with one of us to do their shopping. Def worth a look at the local Facebook page as well if there is an active one. People just want to help!

You could also try phoning any small shops close to her to see if they will deliver. My local convenience store is now doing deliveries to people who can't go out. They take orders by email. Their stock has been a lot better than most of the bigger stores as well, they even had flour today.

Clearthinking · 21/04/2020 23:07

If in Nottingham, I will go for her/you?

covilha · 21/04/2020 23:12

Thanks again everyone. Although my mother never phones this late, she just has...don't think she is on Mumsnet! She said someone from the council phoned her today kindly offering assistance and whilst she declined their offer at the time, they left their number and she will try the tomorrow.x

@How2help- we live near there. Thank you and everyone else for your offer to collect. If the council are unable to assist, would it be okay if I PM you tomorrow or Thursday? Thanks again x

And many thanks to everyone for the advice and offers to collect- it means so much x

How2Help · 21/04/2020 23:31

Yes of course. I’m not sure how to get PMs but if you put a note on this thread to say you’ve sent something I’ll go and find it. I have an idea of how I can provide reassurance of who I am as well.

covilha · 21/04/2020 23:33

Mant thanks @How2help x

Thats brilliant, but why on earth did she decline the offer?

How2Help · 21/04/2020 23:37

Callmeadoctor: I would imagine because she thought a delivery was coming from Morrisons? OP said she had just logged on and found out.

Riv · 21/04/2020 23:43

If she’s further west from Newcastle I have contact numbers for support groups around Hexham including the one for local council vetted Volunteer Shoppers.

covilha · 21/04/2020 23:47

Thanks @How2Help- that's exactly what happened. x

We're not that far along the river, @Riv, but many thanks for the offer x

The tip to get on her local facebook pages is an excellent one.

My local pages are absolutely jumping with ads by local independents who didn’t previously but now are offering delivery services.

Butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, dairies, farm shops, corner shops and even ice cream vans are carrying items they wouldn’t normally to try and help folk out.

My mum was delighted when I told her that her usual butcher was delivering (shop is closed) she’d no idea as she doesn’t really do Facebook

Hope you get her sorted out op.

There’s a food order and delivery service set up for the lockdown in The Granger Market in Newcastle. covering most of their veg and meat stalls. Haven’t got the number to hand but might be worth a google.
There’s also a group of volunteer shoppers in Ponteland, Prudhoe and most of the small towns and villages along the Tyne Valley. Isolation Help Northumberland Facebook page is a good resource for the whole area up there, with links to surrounding are groups.

Worth looking at the Grainger Market - they are doing deliveries to NE post codes ( more details on the website, they're on twitter and fb too) min order £25, plus delivery charge £3.95. Eg veg box £10, fruit box £10 or mixed, various things from the bakery, also fish, meat etc. plus milk, eggs, butter, flour, cereals. I'm going to do an order for me and probably one for my dad for fresh stuff. Have already sent my dad the M & S box (£35 plus delivery) which is all store cupboard stuff eg coffee, tea, rice, pasta sauces, percy pigs, shortbread, tinned fish etc.

shop.graingerdelivery.com/

Zeusthemoose · 22/04/2020 00:02

I've been using Iceland for my parents online shop because they release delivery slots daily for the next day so people can't book too far ahead.

JulesJules · 22/04/2020 00:02

Did the link work? It's www.graingerdelivery.com

Riv · 22/04/2020 00:08

@ JulesJules both your links worked. Thanks for posting them, I couldn’t find them straight away. They do deliver a fair distayfrom central Newcastle.

Riv · 22/04/2020 00:08

*distance

ColdCottage · 22/04/2020 00:34

If she has milk and more they can deliver lots - I get milk, eggs, bread plus they have veg, fruit, meat and cheese, these are quite expensive though.

ColdCottage · 22/04/2020 00:39

Sorry, read they don't do this

Eastender77 · 22/04/2020 00:47

Phone Sainsburys directly - they have slots set aside for the vulnerable.
