Morrisons cancelled elderly mother's delivery. I nurse in London

covilha · 21/04/2020 22:25

Please help. I am a nurse in London. My elderly mother is self isolating and lives around 300 miles away from me. Before lockdown I stocked up her cupboards. Her friends are all elderly and self isolating too and no other family near by. She gets milk delivered. I was only able to arrange a delivery for her with one supermarket and that was to be this weekend. I have just logged onto to place her order and received a message saying her delivery slot has expired and there are no current slots available in her area. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do either via Morrisons or somewhere else as she is running low on food? Thanks

@ Paperthin and @missmap- hope your parents are okay. Its so hard not being able to support them at the moment isn't it x

Ocado are releasing next day slots after 6pm every evening. The delivery charges are quite pricey, but might be worth paying in an emergency

The milk man who delivers her milk, does he sell anything else as well? Juice, bread, eggs?

covilha · 21/04/2020 22:50

Thanks @notthecarwashagain- I will pass on the number to her tomorrow x

@clairewitch70- sadly, no just milk.

I also second the suggestion about looking into what else the milkman delivers. I can get bread, butter, bacon, eggs, cereal, yogurt, fruit and veg, tea, coffee. It's more expensive but OK for a stop gap.

HandfulOfDust · 21/04/2020 22:52

Ahhhh sorry just saw not an option.

The Morrison’s food boxes are meant to be really good. Lots of availability too apparently. In future get your shopping delivery slot booked and checkout as soon as poss (I think Morrison’s allow an hour before they time you out). You can amend the order afterwards, getting it confirmed is the time critical bit!

Thehop · 21/04/2020 22:53

Morrison’s food boxes are delivering £35 and contain food and essentials for one week for 2 adults

Depending on where she is, the council can help. Sunderland council have a volunteer service. I registered my mil, it was set up within 24 hours and a volunteer called and picked up a shopping list and cash left out for them though we can pay by BACS I think. Any supermarket was possible and all volunteers DBS checked. It’s been a lifesaver for us as in same situation. Council also dropped off an essentials box with fruit and veg etc.

charlestonchaplin · 21/04/2020 22:54

When u saved the delivery slot did u log out?

I know it doesnt help you now, But when you get the slot, put 2 or 3 things in there and log out and pay and go back on there and change / update your delivery.

I know you’re trying to be helpful but you’re confusing the issue. You use the term ‘log out’ when you mean checkout. The OP is probably in this situation because she logged out of the account without checking out the shop.

covilha · 21/04/2020 22:54

Thanks @HandfulOfDust- you are right, it would have been ideal but I checked it out before I returned to London and it's just milk sadly. x

Our local independent shops (butchers, greengrocers, delicatessen) are all doing next day delivery and taking orders and payment by phone. Also you can try downloading the “Next Door” app and posting a message asking for help, it’s a neighbourhood app and anyone who’s asked for help with shopping in my area has had plenty of offers in return.

Notthecarwashagain · 21/04/2020 22:55

Hope you get something sorted. It's a worry isn't it?

There wasn't a lot of choice, but my grandma got everything she needed and said they were 'lovely' on the phone (think she was glad of a little chat as well!) and it was delivered the next day.

How2Help · 21/04/2020 22:56

Where in the NE? I will help if within driving distance. I am near Newcastle.

Mustbethewine · 21/04/2020 22:57

Definitely try local Facebook groups near and around where she lives. There is one operating where I live and its run by volunteers who will shop for you. I'm sure you will be able to find someone who can help.

The m&s food boxes now have 6 different options including two different mixed veg boxes, a fruit box and a meat one (literally just meat). Then the main one and a vegetarian version of that.

orlarose · 21/04/2020 22:59

Hope you get it sorted. I'v heard good things about the M&S food boxes. Also as others have said next time you get a delivery slot add items up to the minimum spend and check out straight aware. I'v often wondered whether more people are able to select slots than are actually available and then the slowest people miss out on the slot.

Ninkanink · 21/04/2020 22:59

The Morrison’s food boxes are very good. It should be possible to order quite easily if you check the site a few times a day. Sometimes you’re placed in queue (I was once) but if you wait you will get a chance to order.

The meat eaters essentials box includes milk, bread, cheese, bacon, beef, chicken, sausages, veg (carrots, broccoli or cabbage, onions), tins of soup, baked beans, a packet of microwave rice, pasta and pasta sauce. Plus toilet paper & kitchen towels. Might have forgotten a couple of things.

Plenty of food to tide you over for a week or two as a single person.

atenthofaclue · 21/04/2020 23:00

If the slot you were aiming for wasn't until the weekend anyway then you have ample time to use any combination of these suggestions. So no need to panic.

blindmansbluff · 21/04/2020 23:00

If it's Durham council they've got a hub you can get in touch with and they'll sort out shopping etc. My sister is going on the phone lines from tomorrow. Even if not Durham definitely try the local council, this is one of the situations they're setting up to help with.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 21/04/2020 23:02

If she's in Hartlepool, contact Hartlepool Hub, find them on Facebook. They are coordinating deliveries for vulnerable people, and prescriptions, befriending calls etc too.

returnofthecat · 21/04/2020 23:03

@covilha Just to clarify - the phone service appears to be good, but she has to live within 10 miles of a Morrison's store. Do check first to save a frustrating phone call!

Paperthin · 21/04/2020 23:03

@covilha yes my dad is ok, but I do worry being far away. I’d def try for some local shop/ farm shop deliveries such as butchers or veg shop as they are all doing extras like milk, bread and eggs around here. Also one other thing, does your DM do online banking ? If she can set that up it saves her needing to pay cash for any shopping that someone local can do for her, just bank transfer instead. Hope you get something sorted .
