Ok, so it's not like they were forced on me unwittingly. I bought them when I thought fresh food might become scarce after being persuaded on some of the prepper threads. Now that I have them what should I do to them to turn them into something my family might eat?

I love lentils!

These are two of my favourite recipes:

Vegetable sambar:

Sweet potato and Spinach Dahl:

Lentil spaghetti.

milveycrohn · 21/04/2020 10:25

You do not need to presoak lentils, unlike other pulses.
I cooked mine in boiling slightly salted water (with an onion); then made a gratin with some stale bread crumbs and cheese.
In the oven for a bit to melt the cheese.

TroysMammy · 21/04/2020 10:28

Lentil bolognese. Delicious, even my fussy niece who hates mushrooms (I chop them up finely) loves it. I haven't told her they are lentils as she's never asked me Smile

doodleygirl · 21/04/2020 10:34

I really thought I had read every possible stupidity relating to the Corona virus on Mumsnet, but the comments in this thread win the trophy.

OP it is categorically your fault there is a lentil shortage, hang your head in shame or alternatively give them away to your nearest vegan. Grin

Seriously just enjoy one of the lovely recipes.

Thank you for buying unnecessary lentils, OP. Because if you hadn't, you wouldn't have posted this thread and I wouldn't have been inspired to make tomato and lentil soup.

I am the owner of excess lentils, as well. I bought mine in January, because I was going to try to cook vegan meals a couple of times a week. My family objected to my first lentil recipe, so the rest of the bag has languished unloved since then.

But - no more!!!

ImNotChangingMyUsernameAgain · 21/04/2020 15:17

So pleased all the twatish comments on this thread are drowned out by the chorus of delicious sounding recipes. I’m looking forward to trying some of these recipes and who knows, maybe lentils will feature more regularly on my shopping list.

And as for those who object to my ownership of a bag of sacred pulses, give your heads a wobble if you are part of the same brigade that is encouraging us to eat less meat to save the planet. You can’t have it both ways. Hypocrisy is a most unattractive trait.

Have you discovered what sort of lentils they are yet?

ImNotChangingMyUsernameAgain · 21/04/2020 16:26

They are brown. Have made a note to add red to next week’s shopping. I also have chick peas which I use regularly and pearled spelt which I make delicious by cooking in vegetable stock then stiring through slowly caramelised onions, pomegranate seeds, pistachio kernels and lots of chopped parsley.

My blood is boiling! I use loads of lentils in all sorts of things. I haven’t been able to buy them for weeks - and I am missing them! Why would you buy something you don’t know how to use?

CottonSock · 21/04/2020 16:31

Head to the ethnic shops, we got a 10kg bag there. I use red lentils in loads of curries, soups etc.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 21/04/2020 16:32

I love lentil pate made with wine.

NeedToKnow101 · 21/04/2020 16:33

I love lentils. Haven't rtft yet so won't suggest anything as it's probably been done.

cushioncovers · 21/04/2020 16:35

I add mine to a veggie lasagna or pasta dish instead of minced beef.

AlwaysCheddar · 21/04/2020 16:38

Give them to a food bank!
Lentils are yuk!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/04/2020 16:41

I made a whatever needs using up in the fridge lentil stew with puy lentils for lunch yesterday. Leek, carrots, courgette with garlic, cumin, stock, frozen peas and frozen spinach. Very nice. We eat a lot of lentils here too.

Cooked green or puy lentils are great cold in a salad with olive oil and lemon juice.

NeedToKnow101 · 21/04/2020 16:45

Blimey there's some real pricks on this thread!
I mainly use them for dhal, or sweet potato, lentil and spinach curry (usually with coconut).
My friend used to make lentil fritters; absolutely lovely. I think I'll make some.

HeffalumpsCantDance · 21/04/2020 16:47

Well, although I was one of the sarky twats at the beginning, this thread has now got several delicious recipes I’m going to have to try, including one from the OP. But I’ll have to save up for that one; pomegranate and pistachio in the same dish? Yum but ££.

Oysterbabe · 21/04/2020 16:49

I'm surprised people are struggling to buy lentils, no issues where I am.

queenMab99 · 21/04/2020 16:53

I have made a savoury lentil loaf, I ate 2 slices for lunch with sliced pickled beetroot, did you know you could google recipes?

PeachMoon · 21/04/2020 17:04

Lentil bolognaise This is quite a tasty recipe if you've bought Puy lentils, and makes absolutely loads.

PeachMoon · 21/04/2020 17:09

You can also use half lentils half mince if you can't bear the thought of a completely vegetarian bolognaise (here's looking at you DP Hmm )

NeedToKnow101 · 21/04/2020 17:10

"I'm surprised people are struggling to buy lentils, no issues where I am."
Or me.

chomalungma · 21/04/2020 17:12

'm surprised people are struggling to buy lentils, no issues where I am

That's a strange comment.

Just because you can buy lentils doesn't mean that other people can't.

I haven't seen lentils in Morrisons for a while.
