AIBU to ask WTF I'm supposed to do with lentils???

Ok, so it's not like they were forced on me unwittingly. I bought them when I thought fresh food might become scarce after being persuaded on some of the prepper threads. Now that I have them what should I do to them to turn them into something my family might eat?

I add lentils to my mince dishes to bulk it out, add protein & veg - bolognaise, cottage pie, chilli etc.

Gingerkittykat · 20/04/2020 23:59

@jaded247 those lentil fritters sound amazing.

I think others have covered most of the things I use them for but another good one is lentil moussaka.

Feeling really hungry reading this thread

I love lentils, and eat them all the time, well I did until they were bought by all the panic buyers- I still can't find them anywhere. ...Dall and lentil soup are my favourites....I miss them!

Davespecifico · 21/04/2020 00:03

I cook them in water for about 10/15 mins and eat them for lunch with butter and marmite mixed in.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 21/04/2020 00:06

Finely chop and Fry two leeks and two carrots until soft.

Add precooked lentils

Add one chicken stock cube or stock pot and a splash of water.

Add chilli flakes and season.

Stir in half a tub of creme fraiche.

Stick a pan fried chicken breast on top.

Et voila creamy lentils. And very tasty it is too.

TheStuffedPenguin · 21/04/2020 00:19

I hope you've got lots of toilet paper too Hmm

JigsawsAreCool · 21/04/2020 00:19

@ImNotChangingMyUsernameAgain you sound evil. You must immediately post 3 individual lentils to everyone who has commented on this thread Grin

I make like a lentil and bean bake.

Onion, carrot, chopped tomatoes, lentils and baked beans for base. Mash on top.

I use lentils instead of mince in certain meals if I want to make it vegetarian. The ones I most commonly make are red lentil bolognaise or green lentil chilli. I often put puy lentils in salad.

Dry lentils can have a bit more prep involved, but for what I use them for I find boiling them in stock just before use works just fine.

HopeYouGotTheLetter · 21/04/2020 00:36

Mix with rice, chopped onion, garlic, diced sweet potato, spring onion, parsley, paprika, salt and pepper, oil

And that's what we call "Lentils and rice"

HopeYouGotTheLetter · 21/04/2020 00:39

I’m a grown adult and I can use the internet thing to put in what ingredients I have & see what it comes up with

Didn't your mother ever teach you that if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?

These are my two favourite lentil recipes. The soup isn’t quite the same recipe as the one I make but I have that written down. It’s basically carrot, onion, celery & stock standard soup base with lentils, cumin and turmeric. With fewer ingredients I have everything to make it most of the time.

PhoenixIsFlying · 21/04/2020 00:41

I absolutely adore lentils. I Think they are so underrated.
Red lentils

Brown or green lentils

Both fairly straightforward recipes. If you happen to have a tin of chickpeas then this soup is delicious.

Was there really a run on lentils?
I use them in prawn curry, or any kind of curry.
Here's a tip, when you are cooking them add in a couple of bay leaves, salt and pepper,it will give the lentils a great flavor and then you can add them into the main dish.

EugenesAxe · 21/04/2020 00:49

If they are Puy or speckled lentils, I just boil in water with a couple of cloves of garlic and seasoning for about 25-30 mins, then drain and add a slug of olive oil and ideally, French herbs, mix, and serve then with meat or fish. They are nice with a poached gammon, crispy potatoes and carrot or some other veg.

Red lentils I make mulligatawny soup with - Madhur Jaffrey’s is great.

lemontreebird · 21/04/2020 01:09

Yes, there was a run on lentils. Bloody annoying for those of us who eat them regularly! Grin

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/04/2020 01:09

Saying "Lentils" sounds weird now....

Oncewasblueandyellowtwo · 21/04/2020 01:09

HopeYouGotTheLetter

That sounds lovely and a bit lighter for spring/
How long do you cook the sweet potato?

BlackeyedSusan · 21/04/2020 01:10

No,no op, they are horrible, you won't like them, send them here and I will dispose of them for you.

caringcarer · 21/04/2020 01:13

Tomato and Lentil soup.
1 Cook lentils in saucepan of water.

  1. Skim off the froth.
  2. Add to blender with one tin of tomatos and 1 pint of water and salt. Blend up.
  3. Heat up and serve with swirl of cream and bread.
My family like it.
TimeWastingButFun · 21/04/2020 01:15

We use them a lot for soups and curries. One favourite recipe is from Tesco. It's delicious and the kids love it - realfood.tesco.com/recipes/coconut-dhal.html

NOBODY MENTION THE FLOUR

Scott72 · 21/04/2020 01:17

It very much depends on the type of lentil. Red lentils you can only cook for a limited time before they turn into an unappetizing mush. Green lentils you can boil for much longer. If lentils are the main ingredient I prefer to tip off the water you get after boiling them as I find it a bit too starchy, but that is up to you.

Lentils and soy beans together supposedly make for a nutritionally complete protein, which is where the "soylent" of the 1970s movie comes from (that recipe also includes meat as well :)
