At being mildly piqued at new teaching assistants comments in dd's reading record

Last time she read with the teacher the comment was:
"Fantastic reading"

Dd is struggling with her literacy but usual remarks include the above and phrases such as "Good working out" / "Much improved" or "Good effort"

Today she got (what I felt was a pithy little remark, but I accept I am oversensitive perhaps):

"Guessed a lot of the words. Sounded the words out together. Needs to look carefully at first letter of words"

Ouch!

It seems dd read with the new Teaching Assistant this week (who started work last week).

Good job dd can't read so well, I however can, and felt a bit put out

(I think I have baggage, lol - especially since the TA has a rather bright dd in the same class as my child)

Perhaps she could have softened it with "Nevertheless, good effort"

Am rambling now, aren't I

I think the TA sounds really enthusiastic and that the OP is being a little over sensitive but i can appreciate she feels a bit upset.

But if you look objectively, the OP pointed out tht her DD has problems with reading. What she has received here is some really great pointers to help dd with her reading, identifiying some problem areas. Maybe the lack of teacher training meant she could have worded it better, as i dont think it matters that some of the words were guessed as i bet a lot of children do this. But the fact that she noticed that she is not picking up on the begning of the words at least shows she wasnt going through the motions.

Its never good to receive criticism especially about our children but there was a good comment in there, about sounding out some of the words.

I think TAs play a great role in the class room, i am thinking of having a bash at this prior to teacher training at some point.

HMC, my ds struggled with reading at the start of 1st Grade (age 5.9). Teacher kept moaning about it, but all of a sudden he discovered the Goosebumps series and Captain Underpants (at home) and his reading took off!!! Now, a year later, he reads beautifully and devours anything in sight (including the instructions and ingredients of everything that comes through the house). Try your dd on a variety of books until you find some that she is happy reading...I found that this isn't always the ones that she likes having read to her, or that are obviously within her reading ability. Also, got ds to read a page every night and then I would read the rest of the chapter to him.
Another thing that you might want to do is get proper testing of your dd's eyesight. My ds was skipping small words and some letters when he read and I thought it was because he was just being rushed and/or lazy, but turns out when we got his annual eye test (he had glasses when he was younger), that he has a problem with his tracking which means his eyes have problem moving smoothly along the line of words. (Also explained why he was not so good at catch and certain other sports...can't track the ball with his eyes).
