To ask for scary movie suggestions

DamnYouAutoCarrot · 19/04/2020 14:58

Blatant misuse of AIBU I'm sure. Lockdown has my teen bored beyond belief. I'm planning a scary movie night (she's a month off 16). Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I hope you're all coping as well as can be!

I hated Hereditary. Started off pretty good then the ending seemed to be a different film completely. Like the runner had been carrying two separate scripts, dropped them and reshuffled them. And nobody noticed. I appreciate some people liked it though.

Midsomar is marginally better - pretty gruesome.

RochelleGoyle · 19/04/2020 18:55

Ooh, I love this thread, it's reminding me of lots I want to re-watch. The remake of The Hills Have Eyes was so terrifying it made me feel sick. Wolf Creek is another scarily possible one. Then I'd forgotten Xavier Gens - Frontiers and The Divide. Then there's Martyrs. I also love The Exorcist although many think it's dated.

RingPiece · 19/04/2020 18:57

Wolf Creek
Eden Lake
28 Days/ Weeks Later
The Descent
Train to Busan
The original versions of The Hills have Eyes & Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Blair Witch
The Exorcist
Halloween

It Follows, Nightmare on Elm Street and Final Destination are all quite fun

Didn't really enjoy Midsommar, Hereditary, Babadook.

AintNoMaryPoppins · 19/04/2020 19:01

The Ritual
Hereditary
Conjuring 1 & 2
Geralds Game (the Moonlight Man makes me shiver).

One that's not mentioned much but that I really enjoyed was The Autopsy of Jane Doe.

RingPiece · 19/04/2020 19:02

Actually, most are 18 rated so you may not want to watch them with a 16 year old.

AintNoMaryPoppins · 19/04/2020 19:02

Oh and if you want to give a series a try, please watch Haunting of Hill House on Netflix, it's fantastic.

YeahWhatevver · 19/04/2020 19:06

The Descent 😬😬😬

haverhill · 19/04/2020 19:08

Sorry to be boring but I think some of these films are too much for a 16 year old. Wolf Creek in particular has hideous violence against female characters, doesn’t it? Also The Hills Have Eyes?
Why not try some classic shockers like The Haunting from 1960? It’s been voted the scariest film ever pretty regularly.

AintNoMaryPoppins · 19/04/2020 19:08

Hereditary is the scariest movie I've ever seen

I agree with this, I know a lot of people don't rate it but its the horror movie that made me feel the most uncomfortable that I've watched recently.

I really get freaked out by the whole cult/witchy stuff so the ending really had me coming up with goosebumps.

onegirlandherdog · 19/04/2020 19:09

Contagion. The Platform. (have a fun night :-)

AintNoMaryPoppins · 19/04/2020 19:12

Very good Smile

iklboo · 19/04/2020 19:57

The Descent is excellent, as is The Shining.

The scares in The Descent got lost on us first time we watched it. I'd not long had DS and kept having to pause it when he cried. Took us about three hours to get through!

Much better on the rewatch. Grin

Willow2017 · 19/04/2020 20:13

Train to Busan - hard, fast and one of the best zombie films ever!
I watched it with my teen we loved it although a bit tense to say the least!
World War Z

Dog Soldiers is funny and gory with good characters and sad in bits all at once.
10 Cloverfields Rd not a jump fest but it keeps you guessiing right till almost the end.
Priest
Fright Night (A few funny bits to lighten the mood and David Tennant in leather, what else could you want?)
All the Alien films start at the begining and work your way through them Grin
Legion
I am Legend

nicky7654 · 19/04/2020 20:23

The Shining wins for me !

BubblyBarbara · 19/04/2020 20:26

It Follows

Suspiria

Both pretty good for young women in particular as they’re the main protagonists (and heroes)

ThusSpoke · 19/04/2020 20:27

The Haunting of Hill House
The Conjuring
The Visit
Lights Out
Get Out
Us
It Follows

FrankieDoyle · 19/04/2020 20:39

You have to watch Hell House LLC !! Its free on Prime at the moment.
I was so frightened (and I'm a die hard horror fan).

If you like Blair Witch, you'll like this.

Also Heidi (haunted doll). Very creepy.

LolaDarkdestroyer · 19/04/2020 20:45

Before I wake...scary and freaky as fuck

MrsJBaptiste · 19/04/2020 20:49

@TaTuirseOrm Did watching The Ring in the day help?

I still want to see it but know it will just scare the hell out of me. I watched Poltergeist on a summer's day when I was 13 and I still found it horrendous!

firsttimemum30 · 19/04/2020 20:57

I second a lot of these. Particularly the conjuring, Hereditary, paranormal activity. Sinister and Insidious are also creepy.

Busymum45 · 19/04/2020 20:59

It follows is good
Paranormal activity first one
Descent
28 days later

There's loads as we always watch horrors will.come back with more 🙂

TheSandman · 19/04/2020 21:01

Eraserhead scared the crap out my DD when she was about that age. I don't think I've ever seen her so truly terrified as while she watching that. She loved it. She's got a far higher tolerance for gore and splatter than I ever will have but the creeping weirdness of that film just got her.

Emeeno1 · 19/04/2020 21:02

Event Horizon.

DamnYouAutoCarrot · 19/04/2020 21:04

We're starting with the conjuring. I'm too much of a wimp for this. The teen has the duvet ready! We have a long list to get through.. Keep them coming, this is great. Sweet dreams ladies 😮

DamnYouAutoCarrot · 19/04/2020 21:06

Don't worry, DD is very sensible about them just being movies. It's me who gets scared.
