Wheely bin cleaning

MargotMoon · 19/04/2020 00:05

I didn't know this was a thing until this evening! Someone has posted on local Facebook group asking for recommendations for a wheely bin cleaning service...

Am I being unreasonable/a complete scrubber for having a dirty wheely bin?

Not a lot in the grand scheme of things

It's 2.50 a bin here and we only get it collected every 2 weeks, when dd was in nappies over the summer was when I started getting it done. Can't believe some of you think the bins don't stink. We had maggots in ours which prompted me to get it cleaned.
Haven't had it done over winter but probably will start again now as we have a dog so we have a bin full of shit again.

We have to keep our bins in the garage, which is just off the kitchen and also houses our tumble dryer... you’d better believe those bins get blasted monthly by a lovely local chap who comes on the Saturday after the bins are emptied on the Friday.
He properly power hoses them down, and even saved our bacon when we forgot bin day so he brought over a spare bin for us to use. He’s worth every penny.

On of my more high maintenance fastidious friends pays £48.00 a month for her bins to be cleaned.

Thats coming up to £600 a year. I'd do it for her for half that.

A bucket of hot water, a kettle full of boiling water, and a dishwasher tablet. Swirl it round a bit so the dishwasher tablet dissolves.

Leave the lid down so the steam is trapped.

Leave to soak for a couple of hours. Use a cheap plastic yard broom to scrub it down. Empty water into drain on road.

We have a filthy bin and it absolutely stinks, obviously even worse on a hot day. There’s a guy in our area who goes around with a van jet washing peoples bins, I’ve walked past a few times and wondered whether I’m totally slovenly not to pay someone to clean my outside bin. Just think it’s a waste of money tbh, think he charges a tenner a time.

OhhhPeee · 20/04/2020 20:45

I’ve just paid £10 to have my bin emptied, never mind cleaned! We seem to be producing more rubbish whilst we’re all at home and our bin is only collected every three weeks, there’s a company that does proper collections.

ANoiseAnnoys · 20/04/2020 20:46

I’ve never cleaned my wheelie bin. Must’ve had them about 8 years.

My house is pristine, but why would you clean your wheelie bins? They’re sat in the front garden, away from the house. I don’t see the point - what a waste of money.

I had mine done a few months ago for the first time. The main rubbish bin had some compacted loose waste stuck in the bottom which just wouldn't come out when emptied. Over the last few months it's been causing it to be a bit pongy. I could have tried to do it myself but didn't really fancy it. I had been looking for someone happy to do a 1 off clean but everyone I found wanted a regular contract (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly)

I just wanted someone to get the nasty bits done for me so I could keep on top of it.

Finally found a nice chap that was happy to offer 1 off, irregular cleaning for £6 a bin so booked both in. I'm probably more likely to use an ad hoc bin cleaner more than once as I don't want to do it myself in all honesty but would be happy to get it done 2 or 3 times a year. I don't want 12/24/52 cleans a year though!
