Wheely bin cleaning

MargotMoon · 19/04/2020 00:05

I didn't know this was a thing until this evening! Someone has posted on local Facebook group asking for recommendations for a wheely bin cleaning service...

Am I being unreasonable/a complete scrubber for having a dirty wheely bin?

OP posts:
BlueGheko · 19/04/2020 07:04

Mine costs £2 every 2 weeks, bargain.

AJPTaylor · 19/04/2020 07:09

At our old house we had a chap who did this. He followed the bin lorry route. It was something like 3 quid a bin and he came monthly.
Since moving no such thing here.

RingtheBells · 19/04/2020 07:11

I thought about getting mine done, 3 bins and food waste, and mentioned it to DH who huffed and said why would you pay to get the bin cleaned so he is doing it. He uses a hose mop and Jeyes fluid.

joystir59 · 19/04/2020 07:12

I want this

Sunshine1235 · 19/04/2020 07:16

I had literally never heard of this until I moved to our current road (it’s a bit nicer) and now I see several of our neighbours get it done.the bin washer men are in the road for about a minute and they jet spray each bin for approx 10 seconds so if they are charging £10/bin they are cleaning up

chatterbugmegastar · 19/04/2020 07:22

My neighbour got confused and took mine by mistake.

I realised because his bin was minging.

So I took my bin back and then realised that mine wasn't THAT clean.

So I cleaned it with hot water soap and a long handled broom and got some of those sticky numbers so my nice clean bin would be mine forever 😄

pussycatinboots · 19/04/2020 07:22

Some Cheeky Fucking neighbour tipped something containing gold glitter in ours after we'd put it out for emptying. We use wheelie bin liners, (and double bag food waste/used cat litter) so it must have gone around the liner rather than in it.
This is over a year ago, and despite blasting it with the hose, fairy liquid and a broom, it still has bloody glitter stuck in the bottom.

Bin day this Tuesday, so DHs one job of the week is to karcher the fuck out of it!

Fifthtimelucky · 19/04/2020 08:02

Good Lord. Never knew that bin cleaning services existed. We've lived here for over 20 years and I can probably count the number of times I've cleaned our wheely bin on the fingers of one hand. I've never done the recycling one as it only ever has clean things in it, and I never do the garden waste one either.

Admittedly no food goes in our normal rubbish and only the very occasional nappy (from guests) but even so, it's not like the old days when everything was chucked unwrapped into a metal dustbin and they used to get very unpleasant.

I do wash the food waste bin from time to time, but not very often.

Proudboomer · 19/04/2020 08:10

For those who need even more chemicals in their lives you can buy something called Bin Buddy for cleaning and dealing with bin smells. It even comes in a wheely bin shaped plastic container.

user1487194234 · 19/04/2020 08:16

I have mine cleaned once a fortnight after collection
£10
I just like knowing it is clean
I do outsource most cleaning,cleaner x week,ironing sent out,window cleaner etc

userxx · 19/04/2020 08:18

I so need mine cleaning but unfortunately no one does it around here.

For the people who clean their own, where do you empty the water? Do you have big drains on your properties?

NannyR · 19/04/2020 08:18

I've never washed my wheelie bin - the rubbish is bagged, the lid keeps any smells inside and I've no reason to look inside my bin, I open the lid, chuck in the rubbish and close the lid.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 19/04/2020 08:25

Years ago 2002, I lived somewhere that had bin cleaning service. It was fabulous. Bin was returned freshly washed and smelled clean. It was about £2.50 a month and I loved it.

Moved and we didn’t even have wheelie bins. Black sacks. Never heard of a bin cleaner since. 😢

BanginChoons · 19/04/2020 08:29

I have just learned that wheel bin liners exist.. what a waste of plastic!

Do bins really need cleaning weekly? How dirty do they get in that time, particularly if you bag your rubbish. I just don't see the need 🤷‍♀️

Frariedeamin · 19/04/2020 08:31

I jet wash my ‘garden waste’ bin at the end of the season and the indoor food caddy bin goes into the dishwasher once every couple of weeks. Apart from that I can’t say they are a particular health hazard.

MontysOarlock · 19/04/2020 08:31

We don't have it washed but it is £2.50 per bin and you can choose fortnightly (like our collections) or monthly.

£10 a bin is ridiculous. I would see if there is another company that undercuts that charge.

lidoshuffle · 19/04/2020 08:32

There's a gulley in the road right next to my property, I empty it down there.

brendansbuddy · 19/04/2020 08:46

Agree OP. It's outside, has a lid, takes bagged stuff and I have never once cleaned it in my life. Don't understand why it matters provided it's emptied regularly. I think this is another washing sheets/loo brushes-type opinion-splitter...

PumpkinP · 19/04/2020 08:52

I disagree that it’s the rubbish that smells not the bin, after a while the bin will start to smell, mine was disgusting after the bin men emptied it the other day, it was embarrassing how bad it smelled. Definitely needs a clean

userxx · 19/04/2020 08:56

@lidoshuffle I've just looked out of my window and spotted one! Will be using that 👍

squeekums · 19/04/2020 08:59

On the rare occasion it happens, spray down inside with strong cleaner, let sit for 10 minutes, turn bin upside down over a sprinkler and turn it on to rinse out.
No hoisting a bin full of water over to empty or getting splashback from a hose or pressure cleaner

TheGinGenie · 19/04/2020 09:40

I get mine cleaned once or twice a year because we don't have food bins and each bin is only collected twice a month so it does start to smell and attract flies

ellendegeneres · 19/04/2020 09:55

My ndn does his own bin. My other side ndn had a bin cleaner to do theirs and I approached asking prices. He told me £2 every other week per bin. So now I’m on his list.
I have animals and the bin seemed to smell no matter what, even after the kids no longer were in nappies.

Best £4 a month I spend. I’d do that in Costa. No complaints here, I look forward to it. Plus the fella is so lovely that we always offer a drink or snack, he’s become someone we look forward to seeing (even from a distance!)

ColourMyDreams · 19/04/2020 09:59

Around once a month, when mine has been emptied, I pour a bucket of cold water and some bleach in mine. After a soak I give it a scrub with my yard brush, empty and then put a clean liner in.
It doesn't take long and keeps it smelling fresh.

Stonerosie67 · 19/04/2020 10:01

Our bin cleaner man does this. Best £3 a month ever. I bag all our rubbish up before it goes in, but sometimes, especially in summer, it smells, probably the bagged-up cat litter that goes in. Anyway, the bin men empty it and once a month he follows them round and cleans it, it smells lovely afterwards.
I'm no domestic goddess but this is brilliant!
