To wish they'd reopen the recycling centers?

They closed the tips at the start of lockdown and fly tipping and bonfires have gone up massively in our area as a result.

I appreciate that they constitute a non essential journey to use them, but I feel they're the lesser evil!

AIBU?

YABU - they should remain closed
YANBU - yes they should reopen

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't been sneaking stuff that ought to go to the tip into my household waste, because there isn't really much other options at the moment.

Redshoeblueshoe · 18/04/2020 18:39

Where I live they are considering it, due to the rise in flytipping.

BiteyShark · 18/04/2020 18:41

I wish they would open so I can get rid of all the rubbish I have cleared out of the house from my bored tidy up sessions. It sat in a pile waiting for a tip run Sad

bookgirl1982 · 18/04/2020 18:41

Yes I wish they would. Here they're closed due to staff shortages.

bettybattenburg · 18/04/2020 18:41

The one near us could reopen as the staff have a little hut which they can close, the parking area is linear in front of the skips and only takes 3 cars so socially distancing could be easily done. I'm not sure why they need to open though, garden waste goes in the garden bin and the rest is collected with regular household waste.

DDiva · 18/04/2020 18:41

Its not just opening the tip, it's the ongoing chain of people required to keep servicing it. People shouldn't be doing jobs that create so much waste they cant get rid of or store appropriately.

slothbyday · 18/04/2020 18:42

Yes, they've stopped collecting some of our recycling too so we have piles of that waiting too.

BiteyShark · 18/04/2020 18:43

They have stopped garden collections in my area and I can't put electrical items and old paint etc in the household waste.

WhiteCat1704 · 18/04/2020 18:43

Tips are essential, it's disgraceful they closed them.

Jammydodger1981 · 18/04/2020 18:45

Our garden waste isn’t being collected and nor is our glass. We also have a broken tv to get rid of so I hope they do open soon. We can store it but it is getting in the way a bit!

user1000000000000000001 · 18/04/2020 18:46

There is fly tipping everywhere here. It's atrocious.it is sort of natural that people on lock down are going to do declutters and other jobs or even just being home 247 creates masses.more waste in itself.

Should be easy enough to social distance at a tip

HelloCanYouHearMe · 18/04/2020 18:47

Garden waste collections have been suspended here and if i start putting broken fence panels in my general waste bin, the refuse collectors wont take it - they like to have a root through bins that they deem to be too heavy and will claim its full of inapporpriate waste

AllPlayedOut · 18/04/2020 18:48

They've stopped collecting all food waste, recycling and garden waste in my area.

purplewolfie · 18/04/2020 18:49

I don't drive so I've never used a tip. I'm a bit shocked that some find it so essential. I seem to cope pretty well without it so far.

Notlostjustexploring · 18/04/2020 18:50

There was something on the BBC yesterday saying that it was being considered in some places for precisely that reason.

I definitely agree, especially as some councils have also suspended garden waste collection.

ScouseQueen · 18/04/2020 18:52

Green bin collection has stopped here and mine is full. I would be very pleased if they opened the recycling centres again, even if only on limited hours.

Redbrook · 18/04/2020 18:52

Ours have reopened this week.

BiteyShark · 18/04/2020 18:54

purple what do you do with things like electrical items that are broken? You can't put them in a bin so the only way it to take them to a tip.

I do put unwanted but perfectly usable items outside my house as free to take if I think others might have use for them and they always get taken by someone so I do recycle that way.

yatapina · 18/04/2020 18:57

DH is the site foreman on our local recycling site.

The reason they closed in the first place is because people refused to adhere to social distancing - gave him abuse when he was told to limit the number of cars in at each time and others were dumping stuff outside the skips/his hut for him to sort "because they didn't want to risk getting amongst fuck knows what". He was told to "get on with it and do what the tax payer pays him to do" when he refused to take stuff out of people's boots when they tooted to ask him.

When they asked for PPE they were told that the 2 pairs of paper thin trousers, 1 fleece and 1 pair of thick gloves were washable so they don't need. He's currently helping out on trucks instead where they already don't need to do deal with so many ignorant arseholes with little disregard for him, his co-workers and their families.

No I don't think they should open right now!!

BubblyBarbara · 18/04/2020 19:00

what do you do with things like electrical items that are broken?

Depends what they are. If they’re small enough I’ll stick them in the bin. Who cares and who can track you down really

feelinguseless78 · 18/04/2020 19:04

@bettybattenburg our garden waste collection has been stopped and the other collections are hit and miss. They are prioritising the general waste collection but won't take anything outside of the bin, additional bags etc.

@DDiva, I agree, if you can't store your waste until they reopen then you shouldn't be doing those jobs. Bit clearly people are.

vanillandhoney · 18/04/2020 19:04

They should never have been closed in the first place. It was really short sighted.

Getting rid of waste is essential.

transformandriseup · 18/04/2020 19:04

I know why they had to close but this would save my sanity tbh, there is so much garden waste building up.

lyralalala · 18/04/2020 19:06

Here they are closed because the staff are filling the gaps in the bin lorry crews from people who are not working because of vulnerabilities and who are sick or isolating

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 18/04/2020 19:07

I really think these are an essential service and with councils reducing collections, even more so.
