The nice man over the road leant on his car horn for a solid 30 seconds. My poor baby girl woke up absolutely terrified and has literally screamed nonstop since.

I am full of gratitude for our NHS and i think its wonderful that so many people want to show their support. Could we maybe do it at 6pm instead? Fucking please?

8pm is ridiculous. Who the fuck decided that was a good time?

Some utter dickhead on our street set off a load of fireworks. Thankfully neither DC woke up. I was ready to go out and give the idiot hell if they had.

Honestly now how is making a load of noise of an evening helping anything at this stage, pack it the fuck in.

puppymouse · 16/04/2020 23:01

DD wakes up scared every time and comes out of her room. It gets louder each week with saucepans and football whistles etc

RedHelenB · 16/04/2020 23:01

Yabvu. A bit of inconvenience on one evening a week. My friend is a nurse, moved to work in a COVID ward and it helps her keep going.

BlackAndWhiteCat01 · 16/04/2020 23:03

Fireworks saucepans and bagpipes can all get in the fucking sea

BlackAndWhiteCat01 · 16/04/2020 23:04

(It wakes my shift working NHS neighbours up, btw)

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 16/04/2020 23:04

The clapping I get..the rest nope. Seems a bit look at me I care the loudest.

peekaboob · 16/04/2020 23:04

you're absolutely right, we should jack it in altogether and show our appreciation for the NHS by never voting for the fucking Tories.

Absolutely! NDN works in A&E and he was saying he's going to go out there in scrubs one day and lap it up it's that ridiculous. Then tell them what hypocrites they are. All those in my street out there clapping had Tory boards in their gardens during the election Angry

titnomatani · 16/04/2020 23:06

I feel your pain OP. We live in an enclosed block of flats with a lovely communal garden all of our flats face onto. The man (dickhead) opposite came out and started banging on a fucking frying pan as I was trying to get my 4 month old to sleep. We're suffering from the four month sleep regression and our nerves are shredded so didn't need any extra noise to add to things. Luckily the toddler stayed asleep. It took me another hour after he'd gone indoors to get the baby to sleep.

Bakedpotatoandgin · 16/04/2020 23:07

On our street it's mostly just clapping, it's quite nice and sounds like rain. I know the HCPs over the road like it, so I join in. If there's cars going down the road they tend to hoot though, which is annoying.

titnomatani · 16/04/2020 23:09

⤵️ absolutely!

AJB120 · 16/04/2020 23:12

So many negative comments, yes it’s hard when your kids get woken up once a week to celebrate our wonderful nhs, imagine how something so simple as clapping and making noise for 1 minute once a week will make so many people who are putting their lives at risk smile and feel actually appreciated and celebrated. I feel for people with kids but let’s face it it’s once a week. Why not let your kids have a late night and join in that’s what people are doing on our street. We don’t need all this negativity during a already shit time

Poetryinaction · 16/04/2020 23:15

I think it started in Spain where kids go to bed a lot later. It should be earlier here.

1Morewineplease · 16/04/2020 23:15

I e mentioned this on a similar thread...
A doctor from Bristol Royal Infirmary was interviewed on a news item about his thoughts on this clapping. He basically said ‘ thanks, but no thanks,’ as he preferred it if people stayed inside their homes. Many properties have doorways/drives that are close to each other. People shouldn’t be congregating.
As to fireworks..wtf???

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 16/04/2020 23:16

@AJB120 she's 5 months old, she can't clap and she doesn't have a clue what the NHS is. I specifically said in my OP im all for it, just not at 8pm.

RuffleCrow · 16/04/2020 23:21

Ajb or you could could just clap in the day? Nothing negative about wanting your kids to sleep. NHS staff couldn't give a monkeys whether it's 6, 7 or 8. They work shifts!

Rosebel · 16/04/2020 23:27

It's not just children sleeping, especially with fireworks. Lots of animals and old people are scared by them. Lots of children don't like the banging. Clapping is fine and a nice gesture although it doesn't actually help but anything else is a bit too much.

RuffleCrow · 16/04/2020 23:29

It is a bit reminiscent of the 3 minutes hate in 1984. Except it's 3 minutes enforced gratitude - which i suppose is better. I do think it's weird to over generalise about any category of people. The NHS has s/heroes, jobsworths and sadly a tiny minority who do more harm than good. As in any workplace.

OscarWildesCat · 16/04/2020 23:35

YANBU It's getting silly now....

Ilovemypantry · 16/04/2020 23:39

I think just clapping for a minute is fine (although might be better if it was earlier) but some people are just turning it into a competition of who can make the most noise. None so queer as folk!

MiniMinion · 16/04/2020 23:41

It's a silly time for around here. We have one major hospital and handover is just finishing at 8pm, so there's double the amount of ward staff in work. Hospital isn't near much of a residential area, so people are making noise at one of the two times of day that double the staff are out at work, missing it.

alloutoffucks · 17/04/2020 00:13

A lot of people who are still working are not back home by 6 pm. 6 pm is far too early.

SistemaAddict · 17/04/2020 00:17

We had a horn honker too. Fucking twat. I'd just got ds settled and then all the clapping and honking. They are the most entitled, selfish, inconsiderate neighbours I've ever had and I wish they'd fuck off. Pals with the local Tory wanker MP too. They boil my piss.

Osirus · 17/04/2020 00:22

I was outside tending to animals when the clapping, tambourines, ships’ horns and sirens, and whistles went off. It took me by surprise as I didn’t realise the time, and my two cats scattered and frantically climbed into the roof of one of my garages. They were petrified!

Nat6999 · 17/04/2020 00:25

We've had someone in the next road playing the drums, someone on our road playing the ukulele, fireworks, pots & pans for at least 20 minutes. I'd got music on my headphones on full blast but could still hear it all, why couldn't they choose 4.00pm on a Sunday? It must be hell for anyone who has little ones in bed.
