to think we could cheer the NHS some other time?

The nice man over the road leant on his car horn for a solid 30 seconds. My poor baby girl woke up absolutely terrified and has literally screamed nonstop since.

I am full of gratitude for our NHS and i think its wonderful that so many people want to show their support. Could we maybe do it at 6pm instead? Fucking please?

Loads of people still out working wouldn't be home by 6 so i guess that's why it's then .

Littlecaf · 16/04/2020 22:32

Every Thursday at 8pm (I’m fact every night for 3 months now!) I have laid on the floor o my DS2 bedroom trying to get him to sleep while clapping and horns and chanting have gone on outside. It’s no biggie, it’s only once a week. A neighbour asked me why I wasn’t out clapping and I said “I don’t vote Tory so I’m excused” (huge Tory majority constituency) x

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/04/2020 22:32

Oh great a torie bashing again, how predictable SomeoneElseEntirelyNow , and I’m sure everyone who Voted Corbyn is happy when Synagogues get attacked Hmm

Smellbellina · 16/04/2020 22:34

There is no time it can be done that won’t piss someone off, it’s just something people need to deal with. Look on the bright side, at least it’s only once a week.

Audreyhelp · 16/04/2020 22:35

Really don’t know why people have to bang saucepans, It should be earlier maybe at two in the afternoon .

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 16/04/2020 22:36

@OnlyFoolsnMothers im sorry, i can't hear you over the sound of your dogwhistle. And i don't vote Labour.

It wasn't dark enough for the fireworks that were set off here at 8pm. Where are people getting fireworks from at this time of year?

greytminds · 16/04/2020 22:36

Agree it’s too late. I think our neighbours think we are miserable sods but at 8pm one of us is lying with our toddler whilst she drifts off, or she has just gone to sleep and even the sound of the front door opening could be enough to wake her up, let alone the loud clapping, fireworks, whistles and drums that now feature!

Smellbellina · 16/04/2020 22:38

It should be earlier maybe at two in the afternoon.

And how does that work with babies nap times, people wfm taking calls, having meetings etc. Someone will find something to complain about whatever time it is. Some will complain because it is being done, others would complain if it wasn’t.

Basically, the whole world likes to have something to gripe about!

SachaStark · 16/04/2020 22:39

You’d hate my hometown, OP! We are a port town, so all the ships sound their horns together at 8pm, alongside the clapping.

I like it, I find it very emotional every week. My whole extended family (lots are key workers or work for the NHS) get on video chat, and all clap together. We wave to everybody else we can see all around us, and my area has taken to singing a Cornish song afterwards as well, which feels lovely.

Agree with a previous poster, that surely it’s 8pm to coincide with shift changes, or key workers arriving home from work? 6pm would be way too early, My DH is a key worker, and our evening is only just beginning at 8pm.

Daisy169 · 16/04/2020 22:40

I have a toddler and a baby and am so grateful that they both have a white noise machine playing. I really recommend them (not just for this but for anyone who has a little one who wakes easily at other times)

Smellbellina · 16/04/2020 22:40

If you put your kid to bed just before it you’re a bit silly really, it’s not like it’s a surprise every Thursday.

RememberTheSunnierDays · 16/04/2020 22:40

@Chocolatecake12, it’s not the clapping OP has an issue with, it’s all the extra noise that is happening. For the past four weeks, is that how long it’s been going on for, my baby has been woken up terrified by fireworks behind our house. He was six months old when this started and once woken up like that it’s so hard to settle back to sleep. It may be easier with older children to keep them up later, but not babies.

The time doesn’t even bother me, but unnecessary fireworks do.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 16/04/2020 22:40

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow
Didn’t say you did, I’m making a point that the sweeping statements that if you voted X you can’t support Y are utter crap.
Eg, If you voted Lib Dem you have no respect for women etc etc.
Every government imo has let down the nhs, we lost 32000 beds under new labour, they started the part privatisation of certain procedures etc.

If you don’t want to clap fine but the constant criticism of individuals and nit picking on a well intended 1minute a week is pathetic.

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 16/04/2020 22:42

@sachastark that does sound really lovely! It made me feel v emotional the first time (my doctor parents have both come out of retirement back to the front line), it was just clapping and i teared up and felt very proud and grateful... even last week wasn't too bad, but tonight with the car horn and the fireworks and the clanging and the desperately unhappy baby, it was too much for me!

fascinated · 16/04/2020 22:42

Yes, we had bloody fireworks t8night. I knew it was only a matter of time.

Dimosaur · 16/04/2020 22:43

I think it's 8pm as a lot of health workers are finishing shifts then...
I'd have a word and tell him not to do that again.

I work for the NHS, and tbh, I find it a bit cringe.
The first time was awww, what a nice gesture.
But every week.... Not needed.

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 16/04/2020 22:44

@Smellbellina as i said, she's 5 months old. 8pm bedtime is way too late, she'd be miserable for hours before.

OP posts:
fascinated · 16/04/2020 22:48

I’d call the police about the car horn.

ItsAllTheDramaMickIJustLoveIt · 16/04/2020 22:50

I don’t get the fireworks really (and hate them being set off in people’s gardens anyway) because it’s far too light out at 8pm you’d not be able to see them so waste of time and money. And they’re fucking annoying.

The bloke leaning on his horn was an utter arsehole.

Pickles89 · 16/04/2020 22:51

I don't understand the pots and pans thing. In the old days that was meat to be a punishment ('Loud Music') and for a reason - it's a hideous sound! Clap if you absolutely must, but what's with just making pointless noise?

Areyousurethatsright · 16/04/2020 22:53

No time will please everyone I suppose, but yes I would think 6pm makes more sense. Near me we have clapping, cheering, bashing pots and pans, a saxophone, and fireworks. I'm just glad there were no bloody lanterns.
From 20.01 the local facebook pages are then full up with "Well done xxx road, great turnout!" "Proud to live in xxx street, you were all amazing!" x 100.
So now we're clapping for the NHS and congratulating the people who clapped. Do we then have to congratulate the people who congratulated them..?!

amusedbush · 16/04/2020 22:55

Some jackhole around here sets off fireworks every week. My poor dog's nerves are shot, he cries/paces/hides in cupboards all night afterwards.

Clapping is one thing but fuck off with your fireworks.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 16/04/2020 22:56

Thank god for my boring street, I don't join in with clapping but the neighbours politely clap for maybe 60 seconds then go in. No lots and pans no fireworks

Hollie089 · 16/04/2020 22:58

I'm a nurse at the Nightingale, it's a joke, clap if you want but the fireworks are ridiculous, and the air horns. It was brought up on the local FB site but all that was said was 'it's for a good cause, turn the TV up so your dog isn't scared', 'well sedate your horse' 'well my animals and family like it' and the best, 'the NHS want us to show appreciation like this'.

Yeah, sure the NHS wants a bunch of morons setting off fireworks.

Just a keep up with the Jones's of how much every idiot cares for the NHS based on how much of a racket they make.
