Spelling!

I appreciate some people have dyslexia, SEN etc etc and this is not a dig at people with those problems but for the love of god, why can the majority of people not spell?!
It's not he's when you want to say his.
It's not discusting, it's disgusting.
If it belongs to them, it's their's, not there's
It's know if you know something and no if you're saying no to something.
It drives me fucking potty! We all have our strengths and weaknesses but these mistakes are constant on these threads.

Here here! It is Hear Hear..

Yes, I know @Haffiana. It was supposed to be my little joke. I am just not funny, as my teenager often tells me.

Gran22 · 18/04/2020 12:35

A new one I've seen today. Bomb fire. No doubt the Chester draws and dinning tables were burning.

And, there are not less people going out, there are fewer.

TheSquitz · 18/04/2020 13:06

@Winterwoolies

There’s so many more. I think as well as poor education, people just don’t read enough.

Surely that should be 'there are so many more' Grin

redwoodmazza · 18/04/2020 13:33

Drives me potty too!!!!
Just basic stuff but people seem to have no idea.

LimitIsUp · 18/04/2020 13:53

cardibach - why does it confuse you? My spelling is above average but not exceptional so I occasionally make mistakes. For a formal bit of writing I spell check, but for social media I don't bother.

LimitIsUp · 18/04/2020 14:02

Overall the premise of this thread (and the posters who concur with it) is deplorable. To repeat Worra:
"But when I've recommended MN in my local FB group ( where quite a high number have SPAG issues), I've often been told they would never post here for fear of being pulled up and/or ridiculed, even by the apparently 'well meaning' posters who claim to just want to 'educate them' "

LizzieAnt · 18/04/2020 14:33

I agree, it's all a bit mean. I do agree with @Graphista that professional writers should be held to a higher standard, but regular people....just no. You can strive to improve your own spelling and grammar without looking down on those who use non-standard dialects, or on those who make mistakes.

Port1aCastis · 18/04/2020 16:23

Well yes I agree that it's deplorable to look down on others because of their SPAG as it is never clear from an internet post whether the writer is unable to spell because of learning difficulties, fear of using a public site, using a second language or any number of things and if they've come to this site for help and advice how bloody awful to be scolded for a wrongly spelt word rather than receive a little help and kindness.

rosegoldwatcher · 18/04/2020 18:38

I do agree that it is appallingly bad form to mock posters for their SPAG inaccuracies.
I would hope that the majority of the people on this thread are speaking of the commonly noticeable spelling and grammar errors that cause them irritation and not the makers of those mistakes themselves.

Blueuggboots · 19/04/2020 07:26

I give plenty of advice, kindness and support and don't mention spelling mistakes on the thread and as I said in my OP, I understand some people can't help it. Doesn't mean it doesn't make my teeth itch though.

I'm not having a go at individuals, just the that poor SPAG causes me issues! As you can see from the thread, I'm not alone.
